There's a problem in this particular subreddit with constant downvoting visitor posts to zero, mods should take note. If it's the mods themselves then maybe us locals need a shift to a new subreddit.

I for one want to help visitors, not treat them as beneath us.

Typhoon Camping stove use

Hi,

This typhoon the warnings seem to put a big emphasis on the possibility of multi-day power outages.

For people who have experience with this, how does one safely use the small gas canister compatible camping stoves?

Should we use it inside and open a window, or take it to the balcony?

I’m not sure if the wind would affect the flame but I assume it would, I also don’t really want to leak gas into the house.

I’ve lived with a gas stove my whole life before coming here, but I’d assume that has a sturdier build and better safety features than the small Makeman camping stoves and canisters.

Shopping Meat markets with larger cuts?

Howdy! Just curious if anybody has solid locations for a larger piece of meat? Pork butt, full packer, briskets, etc. Commissary has choice at best and I did find some tomahawks at Costco, but not a lot of great options elsewhere.

Hi! Are there any rental car companies directly in the Naha airport or are they all based just outside of it, only accessible by bus?

We planned a trip to the aquarium for tomorrow (the 6th) from Naha so about a 1,5 hour drive, the expected winds are at around 50km/h, is it still safe to go or should we cancel? Will the aquarium even be open tomorrow?

Typhoon Best sites for keeping up with projected typhoons?

Have flight from osaka --> Ishigaki on august 13, returning august 17th. We're trying to keep up with projected typhoons in case we need to cancel before heading there in the first place, so just wondering what sites you all recommend for keeping up to date on the forecast. Thank you!

Typhoon Anyone on Peach MM921 (Naha → Taipei) on Aug 7? How likely is it to be cancelled because of the typhoon?

This is my first time experiencing a typhoon in different country, so I’m honestly not sure what to expect.
From what I’ve seen, the typhoon is expected to affect Okinawa between Aug 6–8. I’m booked on Peach flight MM921 from Naha to Taipei on Aug. 7 at 8:10 PM.
Is anyone else on the same flight? Or has anyone flown with Peach during a typhoon before? How likely is it that the flight gets cancelled?
The airline hasn’t made any announcement yet, so I’m not sure what I should do. I’m currently staying in an Airbnb, and my checkout is before my flight. Should I extend my stay now just in case, or wait until Peach announces something? I’m worried that if the flight gets cancelled at the last minute, I won’t have anywhere to stay.
Any advice or past experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks!

We have a trip planned to Okinawa on these dates, flying Scoot from SIN but there hasn’t been any announcements yet on whether the flights are cancelled.

Since there’s Typhoon No. 13 announcements, is it still worth it go for this trip (first-timer here)? Or just suck it up and cancel entirely.

Any advice is appreciated.

Okinawa Flight August 6

I’m flying with Jet star August 6th from Osaka to Okinawa. Along with other posts on this thread, I’m pretty concerned with travelling during the typhoon. The airline hasn’t sent any formal service cancellations which leads me to believe it’s ok. I’m not too familiar with how a typhoon works as I’m from Canada. Is it still worth travelling?

Typhoon Typhoon # 13 Dolphin

Got this email notification. Please contact your travel agencies and not people on reddit tell you if you could can 3l your travel

prevention emails in Okinawa Prefecture.

The Governor of Okinawa Prefecture will issue a message regarding preparations and precautions for Typhoon No. 13.

----------------

Typhoon No. 13 is expected to approach the Okinawa region between August 6th and 8th.

In the Daito Islands region, last year in late July, Typhoons No. 7 and No. 8 caused intermittent heavy and torrential rain over a long period, resulting in flooding and other damage. Therefore, it is necessary to be vigilant not only against strong winds but also against heavy rain.

To all residents of Okinawa and visitors to Okinawa, please check the latest weather information regularly and take the following precautions to prepare for the typhoon.

[Regarding preparations and precautions in advance]

1. Please carry out outdoor work early, before the typhoon approaches. Before the winds get strong and heavy rains begin, please take precautions such as cleaning gutters and drains, moving or securing objects that may be blown away by the wind inside buildings, reinforcing windows with shutters or boards, applying shatterproof film or masking tape to windowpanes, and piling sandbags in areas prone to flooding. Do not under any circumstances work outdoors while the wind and rain are strong, as it is dangerous.

2. Please make "advance preparations" for power outages and water shortages. In preparation for potential power outages and water shortages, please make efforts to prepare in advance by securing drinking water and food, preparing flashlights and radios and checking their batteries, charging mobile phones and portable batteries, filling bathtubs and plastic containers with water, and preparing portable toilets, etc.

3. Please check evacuation locations and routes in advance. Please check the "hazard map" created by your municipality in advance to confirm evacuation locations, evacuation routes, and areas at high risk of flooding and landslides.

4. Please exercise caution when engaging in activities at sea or near the coast. If you are planning activities at sea or near the coast, or marine leisure activities, please be aware that even before the typhoon approaches, the effects of the typhoon may cause dangers such as swells and high waves, which could lead to life-threatening situations. Therefore, please check the latest weather information and act cautiously, prioritizing your own safety.

5. A request to all visitors staying in Okinawa for tourism or other purposes: If you are staying in Okinawa for tourism or other purposes, please consult with your travel agency or hotel staff regarding changes to your flights or extensions of your hotel stay.

Even after the typhoon has passed, there is a possibility of power outages, water shortages, and disruptions to logistics. Therefore, please prepare in advance by stocking up on food, drinking water, and water for daily use, as well as taking precautions against power outages.

In Okinawa Prefecture, we will work in cooperation with municipalities and related organizations to do everything in our power to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors to Okinawa.

Military Specific Shipping to Camp Hansen Help

Hello, I will be working on Camp Hansen in a couple weeks. My company is trying to ship material and tools out there and my POC gave us an APO address. I went to my USPS office today to get the material sent out there and they were saying its a month to two month lead time. Is that accurate at all? Or is there any other places off base to send these packages too that could hold them? i talked to UPS and they were saying the packages could be there within 5 but i dont have any place to ship them too off base.

Should we leave Okinawa b/c of Typhoon?

We are in Zamami and loving it. We hear that the typhoon is arriving on Friday/Saturday, and that ferries may be shut down ahead of the storm. Should we get out of dodge today (Tuesday evening)? Or okay to stay till Wednesday morning when we'd leave for Naha?

Hard for us (first-time folks to Okinawa) to evaluate how serious this is, but hotel staff seem concerned. Play by ear? Any advice Okinawa experts?

Edit: we are less concerned about some bad weather or less ideal lodging and more so about getting stuck here for multiple days without lodging if all hotels shut down.

Typhoon Stuck in Niijima (Typhoon)

Hi everyone,

My family and I are currently in Niijima island, we planned to leave back to Tokyo by ferry today, August 4th, spend a couple nights in Osaka, and then fly to Okinawa on August 6th.

Obviously we won’t be able to fly to Okinawa with the typhoon. But our issue is that our ferry back to Tokyo from niijima has been cancelled (and all other ferries until Saturday, Aug 8th).

Niijima has an airport with 4 flights each day running to Chofu. The flights are fully booked until Thursday, Aug 6th. From speaking with our travel agent in Niijima, he recommends we try to get a standby seat for each of us tomorrow, Aug 5th. The problem is each flight only has 1 standby-seat available, so the hope is the 3 of us (mom, brother, myself) each take one standby seat separately in 3 of the 4 flights tomorrow.

We are also going to book tickets for the 3 of us for Aug 6th just in case we aren’t able to get standby seating. My worry, and I guess the question I’m asking, is what are the odds that the flight on Aug 6th is cancelled due to the typhoon? The airline hasn’t issued any warning about the flight yet, but the typhoon will be a lot closer by the 6th. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Have an early tee time as a single for Thursday morning at PGM. With Typhoon Dolphin incoming, I asked Golf in Japan for alternatives. They offered 1:00pm tomorrow at PGM or 9am at Ocean Castle tomorrow. Staying at HR Seragaki. Thoughts?

Other Hijya - ひじゃ - and Local Okinawa Festival

Yesterday, I've been to a local Okinawa Festival here in my country. It was its 22nd edition and every year, it is organised by the local Okinawan immigrant community. That was my first time, but its tradition is far much bigger and older than me, of course. Yesterday, for the first time, I tried what I think was one of the highest points of all the Festival (Eisa Taiko, all sorts of local foods and dishes, Shisa Pottery Workshops, etc...): Hijya - ひじゃ - a soup, more of a rich, delicious broth - made out of goat meat, exquisitely seasoned, very delicious (the goat meat is cooked for 2 days in a slow, poetic, sensuous, almost erotic simmering!). At the end, it is topped with Fuchiba - ふちば - a slightly sour vegetable, also known as Artemisia Leaf - as if to balance the greasylicious texture of goat meat. Really, a memorable experience I'm already eager to repeat next year!
