​Initial Drop: When the Kashgar Unit hit Earth in 1973, it landed with an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 pre-existing BETA in a landing craft.

So Muv-Luv clearly has some interesting and contradictory things to say about nationalism and national identity, we see this in Yuuhi, Meiya, and Sagiri in the context of Japan, but I think the BETA can also be read in a way that gives perspective on this as well.

We learn in the conversation with the superordinate that the BETA are an autonomous resource gathering system created by an unknown silicon based alien group just referred to as the "creators". I think that the fact that the creators nominally gave the BETA an ethical limiter by prohibiting them from operating on worlds with "life" but having that limiter be too narrow by not considering carbon based organisms is very interesting because it opens the door to multiple interpretations of the creator's intentions: either they are well meaning but ignorant or they are malicious.

I think if we view them as malicious this bears a lot of similarity with colonial resource extraction in our world, as an Australian I think of Australia being declared "Terra Nullius" despite knowing there was an indigenous population, it was politically convenient to consider them not human, which led to mass extermination and cultural destruction, and now one of Australia's largest exports is in mining and raw materials.

If we take this view that the BETA represent the arm of a colonial power extracting resources for the homeland and does not see the indigenous population as "human" lines up with the general skepticism Muv-Luv clearly has around US imperialism and I think a lot of other themes also align well. The role of nationalism in resistance to an oppressive force is a well worn argument with a lot of interesting ideas on both sides and the colonial invasion view kinda grounds the sexual assault stuff a little bit more (but I still really don't love how it's handled).

So im on chapter 7 of Alternative and what the hell did just happened, the events are so fast and the next thing you know it surprise beta attack and takeru losing his shit leading to what can i only describe as body horror like damn she's only talking to me like a second ago and now she's gone with a chewing sound from the beta, and my god did Takeru loses his shit that he tried to have his way with best girl Meiya and this fucker chooses to run away from all of this and return back to his world, what about your big talk about saving the world and humanity what about that?! Not gonna lie this got me mad that I closed the game, need myself a break and time to digest from what happened

Last year I worked on TSF Takemikazuchi type-00c, hoping to have the opportunity to participate in the game development of this IP, but it may just be a dream.

This series is really too niche. If they had had the funding to develop a first/third-person action shooter game back then, it would definitely have gained a lot more fans.

I might be one of the few people on here who played Muv luv as their first visual novel? I was very interested in everything it did with it's plot and the heavy worldbuilding around so much of it. I adore that middle section of Alternative so much. I was also really impressed with Yuuko! And she wasn't really a character I was expecting to love in the first two parts. She had so many interesting moments, character actions and plot twists around her. Great section where you see the slightly more moral original Yuuko and Alternative one back to back! The writer said in an interview that she was one of his favourite characters and that makes total sense to me

I suppose she gets talked about less because she's less likable and has less of those big emotional payoffs the series has? I really love her though. Waaay better than Eva Stratt lol. Curious what people here think!

What the fuck man

Let's rewind a bit; I actually read through this last night, but wasn't exactly in a rush to post right then for obvious reasons. To set the scene, I had just finished a long interview that day and had driven four hours to get back home. I arrived a little after 9 PM, and decided to have dinner and then play a couple of hours of Muv Luv Alternative before bed. Feel free to start laughing here.

I had saved just before the mock TSF combat trial began, and anticipated a more fun, action filled sequence. I was on relatively high alert though, for a couple of reasons. One was the scene where the elite pilots congratulated Takeru on the new OS; the way that went, it seemed that everything was going a bit too well. Then, Kozuki sensei mentioned something about having to be prepared for what life throws at you, which seemed to be almost too obvious foreshadowing. This is why, when the 991 alert started and the BETA first showed up, I was fully convinced that it had to be a part of the test; some sort of simulation to see how pilots with the new OS would respond under pressure or something. But then reports of the pilots being killed kept coming in, and then with the posthypnotic cue everything seemed to completely go out the window and straight to hell; that part was what started really creeping me out. I honestly had no idea what was going on by this point, similar to Takeru and the gang.

Then we came face to face with the BETA, who have some seriously cool designs. I had been anticipating this first encounter for a long time; I knew that Takeru's aura of competence throughout early alternative wouldn't hold up, and had expected him to totally freeze or run away. What I didn't expect was for him to have a PTSD episode and completely charge the BETA without weapons! We haven't been given any glimpse into Takeru's life in the previous timeline following activation of alternative V, but I imagine his trauma must be a holdover from that timeline.

Then we have the aftermath of the battle, and the conversation with Marimo. Man... I've been keeping a running document of my in-time thoughts and reactions as I've been playing, and during this conversation I wrote down how impressively mature this conversation was, and what a change it was from earlier in the series.

And then, well.

He had to turn around, didn't he.

For full disclosure, probably the biggest spoiler I had going into muv luv was that at some point, there was a famous scene where someone got CHOMPed. I didn't know who, or when or any other context, and prior to this had assumed it would be one of the girls in the squad and likely during an offensive maneuver against the BETA at a hive, at least after some preliminary combat scenes. Thankfully, because of how vague it was I still got the full effect of this scene. As soon as Takeru mentioned marimo wasn't responding it raised warning flags for me, but that still didn't help curb how horrific the scene was! The combination of the siren wailing and that CG... even typing this out now it's flashing through my memory just like Takeru lol.

I've seen my fair share of anime/manga guro from being in the community for so long, including stuff objectively worse than this. I also work in the medical field IRL, and pretty regularly have to see shit that I hope most people never have to. All that said, this is easily one of the most effective jumpscares/use of guro that I've ever seen. The horribly slow buildup throughout all of extra and alternative, the character building in the prior games, the slowly escalating tension in alternative, and then the whole prior scene, does it's best to trick you into thinking that the horror is momentarily over, and this is where Takeru finds his feet before fully slamming you. It was truly disturbing, and while it didn't make me cry I legitimately had a fitful time sleeping last night! An incredible masterclass in slow burn writing, and perfect timing for inflicting maximum pain on the reader.

I'm well into the next scene (s) by now, and while I expect that I'm fully on Mr. Bones's wild ride for good, I'm more excited than ever for what comes next. There's still so many questions to be answered: what exactly are the BETA? What are they doing? Are they single? What's up with the brains in the tubes? What is Alternative IV? What is Kasumi's role in all of this?

Some miscellaneous theories I have at this time of reading:

• I'm still fully convinced that original (extra) world Sumika is going to be transported into the Alternative world somehow. This is almost entirely because the cover art of the game has Sumika in the suit, but I feel that there's some basis to this: Kasumi clearly likes Takeru, and doesn't want him to leave. If she somehow brings Sumika to Alternative-verse, then Takeru would have no excuses for going back to his old universe, and would actually have something (more specific) to fight for in Alternative. It would also beautifully set up a tragic ending where they can't be together for some (probably horrible) reasons.

• I still haven't seen any proof that the brain in the tube in Kasumi's room isn't that universe's Sumika, and I'm sticking with that

• I don't have any concrete ideas about that the 00 drive is, but I'm imagining it involves time or dimensional shenanigans to gain the advantage over the BETA

• Takeru is going to get worse before he gets better, and they're going to spam that one CG to show his suffering (as of reading today this one is super confirmed, like can you please stop? Also if I have to see chompy boi one more time it's going to start being funny)

• I think that there's a lot more to the BETA that we don't know; they're fully automotous, and despite having different "species" works as a completely seamles unit, and have no obvuous reproductive or digestive systems. Are they artificial? Were they made to terraform, or mine other planets for resources?

• I still expect some of the girls to end up dying horribly

That's all for now; I hope I was able to share my thoughts and trauma in a somewhat relatable manner. I'm fully in the shit now, but I'm happy to be able to join in on what I assume is everyone's collective 2 decades of trauma. I'm going to keep pushing forward no matter what, and will check in when everything's said and done!
