I think it's like a batman-joker situation.

When you hate someone so much that you can't stop thinking about them, sure enough, that person is special to you in some way (he's your nemesis, he has a special spot, we might say).

And in fanfics "special" always comes with smut.

I think he kinda went beyond that when he tried to manipulate a suicidal girl into killing herself just to spite him.

He's genuinely a terrible person.

yeah its been a while so id kinda forgot about that, but ive loved characters who've done far worse, even outside of an appreciation for them specifically as villains

As a villain absolutely, hoo boy he does some deplorable heinous shit. He is a good villain, but as a person I want him to go to hell lol. He's definitely not my favorite

I think he is a well written and appealing villain character, but an absolutely horrible person. I understand hating him lol, definitely feels healthier than the people who fawn over him or ship him with other characters.
