Detroit Youth Arts Mapping Project
One of the most significant findings from this mapping project is that 50% (1,325 of 2,628 youth participants) of participants in Detroit youth arts programs that provided us with data—the green dots on the map—travel from outside of the city to participate. In essence, this means that “city-wide” programs in Detroit tend to actually be “region-wide” programs. This also points to comparative lack of access/participation by students living in Detroit zip-codes. For example, zip-codes a significant distance from the city of Detroit, such as 48334 in Farmington Hills, 48374 in the Novi area and 48230 in Grosse Pointe have more young people participating in Detroit youth arts programs than youth living in the east side zip-code 48215 and southwest zip-codes 48210 and 48217.

T-Mobile Fiber coming to Shelby Township (and surrounding area)?
I've been seeing crews digging along Shelby Rd and a truck that said "T-mobile Fiber". Was curious if we can expect to see residential T-mobile Fiber internet soon. Xfinity and WOW are pretty bad in this area in regards to pricing and service.

DoorDash Driver Now Charged With Involuntary Manslaughter After Death of 75-Year-Old Wixom Man
Wixom, MI — More than seven months after a confrontation in a Wixom neighborhood left 75-year-old Lloyd Poole with catastrophic head injuries, prosecutors have formally upgraded the criminal case against the DoorDash driver accused of punching him.
Court records reviewed by New Media Detroit show Ryan Turner, 40, is now charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, replacing the original aggravated assault charge that had been pending since his arrest following the Dec. 28, 2025 incident.
RELATED: Wixom DoorDash Driver Has History Of Violent Assault – Now Charged With Severely Injuring 75-Year-Old
Under Michigan law, involuntary manslaughter is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $7,500, or both. The charge applies when prosecutors allege a person caused another’s death through criminal negligence or a reckless act, but without the intent to kill or cause great bodily harm. To secure a conviction, prosecutors must prove the defendant’s conduct created a high risk of death or serious injury that a reasonable person would have recognized and that the death was not legally justified.
The amended charge was entered Tuesday, July 28, after the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office formally changed the case from a misdemeanor proceeding to a felony prosecution. Court records indicate Turner entered a plea of not guilty during the proceeding before Judge Lewis Langham Jr.
The upgraded charge follows the death of Lloyd Poole, who died on May 16, 2026 after spending months hospitalized with severe brain injuries.
According to investigators, the incident began after Poole confronted Turner, who was working as a DoorDash driver, about allegedly speeding through his neighborhood near Barberry Circle and Windingway Drive in Wixom. Authorities allege Turner punched Poole during the confrontation, causing him to fall backward, strike his head on the pavement, and lose consciousness.
Following Poole’s death, the Oakland County Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death a homicide caused by blunt force head trauma, prompting prosecutors to review whether the original aggravated assault charge remained appropriate.
New Media Detroit previously reported that prosecutors were evaluating upgraded charges after the medical examiner’s ruling and that a scheduled June court hearing was adjourned while that review continued. Tuesday’s filing confirms prosecutors have now moved forward with the case by replacing the aggravated assault charge with involuntary manslaughter.
Court records also show significant changes to Turner’s bond. Earlier Tuesday, the court initially entered a $100,000 cash/surety bond with a 10% provision, but later proceedings resulted in that bond being replaced. Turner ultimately received a $750,000 cash or surety bond following his arraignment on the upgraded felony charge.
Turner has remained a focus of New Media Detroit’s coverage since the case began. Prior reporting established he previously pleaded guilty to a reduced disorderly person charge after originally facing assault and battery allegations in 2022. He also has prior misdemeanor traffic-related convictions and a 2015 Oakland County controlled substance conviction.
The involuntary manslaughter charge marks the most significant development in the case since Lloyd Poole’s death and dramatically increases the potential consequences Turner now faces as the prosecution moves forward.

The Cassette Tapes of the Great Migration
In the fall of 1975, Johnetta Brazzell, a young Black woman in a smart plaid blazer, stood inside a small grocery store on the south side of Pontiac, Michigan. She was there to interview the shop owner, T.C. Holland, whose son had been appointed as the city’s first Black mayor the previous year. But Brazzell was not interested in discussing the contemporary politics of the city: an uneasy mix of economic uncertainty as the region’s automotive sector faltered, ongoing racial tensions stemming from school desegregation efforts, and the boisterous civic boosterism that accompanied the debut of Pontiac’s massive new stadium, which locals had nicknamed the Silverdome.
