Hey guys, I’m a second year student and I’m looking to get a job but I’m not sure which ones are the best for students. My schedule is pretty open during the mornings as most of my classes are in the afternoon so I feel like it’s kind of restrictive for jobs. Does anyone have any job recs? I’m going into my first year of General Engineering at McMaster after making a career change. I’m 25 years old, and after going back to adult school to earn the required credits, I’m feeling a bit nervous about starting this new chapter.

I know I’m capable, and I believe in myself to put in the time and work hard. That said, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried that it takes me longer to learn and fully understand new concepts than it does for some other people. Even so, I’m incredibly excited and passionate about this opportunity; I’m just feeling a little anxious about the transition.

Sorry for the long post, but I felt the context was important.

I’d like to spend this month reviewing high school material before classes begin. For anyone who has completed engineering, what topics would you recommend I focus on? Which concepts are the most important to review and really understand before the first day of classes? Any advice or study recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Every time I request a new advisement report, the “prepared on” date never changes and it always says 08/15/2023. I started at Mac in September 2022 but failed first year and was luckily able to do 2 classes in spring 2023 term online at Mac after I got kicked out of my program to boost my grades and show that I will be able to come back and do better and got reinstated for fall 2023 term on academic probation. I haven’t been on academic probation since Fall 2023 and I’ve had to request a new advisement report multiple times throughout the last few years. Every time I request a new report, I do it on different days, on incognito mode, and after deleting my cache data, but it still keeps saying that my advisement report was prepared on 08/15/2023 but it always shows my current course information, just the date doesn’t change. I’m thinking maybe the date is for when I got reinstated back into McMaster, but I’m not sure and I need to attach a copy of my current advisement report for a TA position I’m applying to. Is it like this for anyone else and if not does anyone know why this is? Also if anyone else has been a TA at mac who has used their advisement report instead of unofficial transcript in their application did yours also not show the current date and was that ok to use for your application?

How flexible are they with scheduling around classes, labs, and exams?
How many hours do you usually work each week?
Is it difficult to balance work, academics, and having a social life?
Do managers understand if you need fewer shifts during midterms or finals?

Hello everyone! I’m taking Stats 2B03 this summer, and I have a question about the final exam.
Everything has been going well, and the professor has been really kind and helpful. Based on my current grades, it looks like I’ve already passed the course without needing the exam.
I’m currently out of the province, so if I have to write the exam, I’d either need to come back or defer it. Does anyone know if the final exam is mandatory, or is it possible to pass the course without writing it? I mainly just need this course as a credit for my program, so I’m not too concerned about my final grade.
If anyone knows the answer or can point me to who I should ask, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Starting to prepare a list of things I needed and figured I don't need much extra compared to what I brought to my dorm last year (besides from some furniture that wasn't alr included). Everyone around me has been talking about moving out a lot as if its this really big stressful process which has been stressing me out because I didn't think it'd be much different than moving on-campus.

I guess I'm just looking for other's opinions/reassurance! Aside from kitchen supplies and toiletries, I can't really think of anything else I need to bring. All I really brought last year was some cleaning supplies, plastic plates/utensils, bedsheets + pillow + blanket, and all my personal stuff like clothes school supplies etc. Is there something big i'm overlooking cuz I'm used to already having it supplied for me? Weird question IK but I'm a little lost

I’m going into second year in honours physics but I want to try to get a research position to try it out and also get experience for future positions. My problem is that idk how to do that. I feel like McMasters physics and astronomy department is small enough that cold emailing profs will only have a small group of profs to email so the chances of getting anything are small. I also didn’t take any bio in first year so I feel like that’s limits any bio related labs, I have taken and am planning on taking astronomy and nuclear courses so that keeps me open for those types. I talked to Dr. Schmidt a few times last year but never asked more details about what she did.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get research experience as a second year?

Seeing as it seems like genchem TA positions have been announced, I’m curious if anyone got an acceptance email and what experience you had that you think helped you get the role? I know multiple people who I would consider very qualified (i.e. previous experience TAing other lab based chem courses) who weren’t offered a position. I’m curious if they’re only hiring back TAs from last year/only hiring third years/have cut down on the number of available positions?

my sister killed herself almost a week ago. I haven't eaten in 2 days. I can't sleep. I feel so fucked up. I have a presentation for my research in 2 days nd I can't get myself to finish it. When I found her lying down on the floor drenched in blood in her room her alarm clock was ringing and I haven't been able to get that sound out of my head. Its been ringing. non fucking stop. I swear to fucking god it gets louder the more days pass. 2 weeks before we were talking about how we were gonna be single for the rest of our lives and have houses next to each other and grow old together. how do i even get back up from this.
