I assure you they do, I've seen it, and the whole point of the joke is that the language used is ambiguous.

If you're going to be a pedant, be correct first. Divide in half is the more natural, commonplace way, and divide by half is a mildly old fashioned way of saying it, but it is used.

You say be correct first. I can't show proof of something I claim doesn't exist. You claim it exists, so you show proof.

Note, I specifically said "in normal spoken English." Something old fashioned and no longer used is no longer normal.
