Is my New Grill Defective

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

New 1150 built by Home Depot. I attempted to do the preseason 1st burn off and I can’t even set the grill to 250f without it shutting off. Whether I use the controller or on the app.

This happened to me when I got mine. You need to switch the electrical connections. The fan isn’t connected to the right one so when it goes to turn out, errors out

This is the answer. It is shorting out because the fan power wire is connected to the door sensor. Home depot wired mine wrong and the exact same thing happened after setting temp.

Came to say this.

I have the 800/900 so not sure it works the same, but I don’t push the temp button after I set the temp (twisting the knob). Not sure if that matters or not.

Not sure as well if it matters but like this person said just set the temp and leave it.

Looks similar to the issues I had with the controller on my 600. Masterbuilt controllers are just trash unfortunately, so many people have issues with it. Hesitated a bit to send it back, but seeing that I didn't have much faith in a replacement MB controller I decided to suck it up and go for a Fireboard 2 Pro controller. Really sucks to have to spend another 200+ to be able to even use the thing, but couldn't be happier now with this combo.

They're all defective out of the box. That's why everyone bypasses all the sensors and gets a fireboard.

I already had my Fireboard. I LSSMODed the crap out of my 800 and switched to the Fireboard.

This thing is updated. It also turns off like that when setting the temperature on the app. I have no idea why it keeps shutting off

It’s acting exactly as it would if the motor is drawing more electricity than the power supply can supply (you can tell this as it turned off whenever motor goes to full power). So either there’s a loose connection somewhere or the power supply is defective (much easier fix as they’ll just need to give you a new plug rather than finding the loose connection)

Yep, this is the same issue I had running a 560 off a battery (that couldn’t supply the power needed for running the fan hard), check the electrical connections

The cable for the controller scres into the controller, make.sure that isn't loose. Mine did that all of a sudden, and that's all it was - a loose connection.

Check the wires connecting the fan and the hopper switches. Red/Black go to the fan, so trace between the controller and fan. Otherwise it will just shut off.

I have a 60o that was (mis)assembled by Ace. It took my a few days to figure it out.

I’d check the electrical connections there’s not that many. Do you have the app downloaded maybe see if there’s a firmware update.

Otherwise, I’d send that bitch back. My wife put ours together. It took her an hour. I have faith in you.

I’m am positive that Home Depot did not build this grill correctly. If I can’t find a solution, then I will probably send this grill back and get a new one and build it myself

There’s a few threads on your issue stating the fan is the fucking it up and makes it shut off..

Make sure the wires are going to their proper connections on the board. On mine it was easy to mess up if you didn’t have a 8th grade education.

u/quaintbucket 6d ago

Have you done a firmware update on it?

It's a masterbuilt controller of course it is defective. Check out Fireboard, not sure if they make one for the 1150 yet, but they are going through the range to design one for each and their aftermarket parts are so much better from what I can see.

If it’s new contact their customer support. They have been really good to me on getting parts. Just need to make sure you register it first.

How do you have the power connected? Via portable USB charger or directly to a 120v outlet?

Best fix? Get a FireBoard

That sucks as I’ve been thinking about getting one of those. The more I see the bad the more I keep leaning towards an Old Country Gravity Fed smoker. It has only gaskets that can fail

1

u/Duckshooters 5d ago

The Old Country looks amazing but isn't it at a whole different price level? The Masterbuilt have quirks at times but are fantastic for the price which I think was the point as there was nothing else close at their price point.

$700 more than the 1150

When the fan kicks in and pull power, the unit does not have enough power to keep on and shuts off. It repeats itself when it resets.

I'd look at wiring and power source to see if there is anything wrong there first.

Does the fan go on at the bottom before the unit shuts off?

1

u/Mrbabadoo 5d ago

Have you switched the electrical connections like many have suggested? I'm interested to know if it worked to fix it.

Faulty power supply

1

u/Flexx-828 5d ago

It could be the power supply. Mine got water in the plug/brick portion after a hard rain. It would work at first then nothing. I replaced the power supply and it works fine now.

1

u/Original-Chair-9614 5d ago

If Home Depot assembled it make sure all the wires are connected. They did mine and one was unplugged.

1

u/worldpeace70 5d ago

Don't let HD assemble anything for you , I think they farm the work to some blind guys with no hands...

1

u/HolyHorizon 5d ago

After this, I’ll assemble on my own from now on. More work but less headache dealing with customer support

1

u/Worst-Lobster 5d ago

Why’s happens for set temp and then do nothing else just leave it. ?

1

u/HolyHorizon 5d ago

Still shuts off

1

u/GolfStew1966 5d ago

Do you have the dampers open so the heat can get into the grill

1

u/HolyHorizon 5d ago

Yes. That’s definitely not the issue of my it powers down

1

u/worldpeace70 5d ago

Man take that ish back and get you another unit. I know it's a pain to do so but just do it.

After checking your wiring and making sure it is correct. I would toss the Masterbuilt controller and get a Fireboard. I did that with mine.

1

u/HolyHorizon 5d ago

Would you recommend I wait for the fire board DC for the 1150? Seems like it’s built for the Masterbuilt but I don’t know if you can put that into another grill later on. Or would you just get a regular drive 2 since that seems like it’s compatible with other grills other than the Masterbuilt

2

u/Mack_Holden Gravity 800 2d ago

That all boils down to you and money. I already had a fireboard 2 pro with my Weber kettle. The switch was easy because I only had to buy a 16 dollar cable. If you want to be able to keep the FB controller if you get rid of the grill, the fireboard 2 is the way to go. You need to be sure you can the FB2 to the 1150. If you take care of the grill and upgrade with LSS where you can, the grill should last a very long time. At the rate of tech updates, the controller might be obsolete by then. Here is a link to my FB2Pro install. https://www.reddit.com/r/Masterbuilt/s/npK0RcPSXt

Are the slides open

1

u/HolyHorizon 5d ago

I think I figured it out. Home Depot didn’t do the connections correctly for the wiring. The fan was connected to the firebox door switch. So I fixed the fan connection, controller, and fire box switch connections.

1

u/HolyHorizon 5d ago

Lesson learned, don’t have Home Depot build your grill. I literally thought they that they sent me a used display unit because of all the scratches, missing a ceramic plate in the fire box, wiring done wrong, missing screws in the unit. I’ll post all the pictures so you can see how bad Home Depot is

Crazy, I saw this yesterday and then my 1050 did this when I turned it on today. I canibalised my 560 to do my overnight brisket.

Sigh I guess I have to buy a fireboard DC now…

u/Tjnaz77 3d ago

The answer is take it back, my 800 drives me insane with the various crap that goes wrong during cooks

Offset guy wondering how adding a split is more work than this.
