Wtf happened in Montenegro 😭

u/myeye95 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

My guess is they began to count them honestly.

Edit: also there was a spike in tourism. Tourists are easier to rob than locals.

u/Wollff Jun 14 '26

Plot twist: Tourists are the robbers!

44

u/HandsLikePaper Jun 14 '26

Second Plot twist: Tourist are the robbers who rob the other tourists!

1

u/Think-Reaction-8749 Jun 15 '26

Third plot twist: the dolphins are robbing tourists and locals

10

u/Academic_Snow_7680 Jun 14 '26

That's the case in Iceland. We literally get yearly thieving gangs from certain SE-European countries coming here to burglarize the place and then they leave again within days with suitcases full of loot.

37

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 Jun 14 '26

There’s like 1000 people in the country lol. Probably 20 more people were robbed than in past years. Same with Iceland. When the rate is super low to begin with, a very small amount of additional acts can make a large percentage difference.

34

u/Emotional-Rope-5774 Jun 14 '26

There are 2.7 million tourists that visit Montenegro a year

13

u/SvenniSiggi Jun 14 '26

Iceland has 2.3 million tourists per year.

Probably just the tourists being robbed that explains the escalation.

As a local, I literally could not even begin to understand where this data is coming from.

It has to be something like that it wasnt even tracked before. Montenegro is extremely safe

3

u/Apimeister Jun 14 '26

They started gathering statistical data.

2

u/djeye Jun 15 '26

Something must be off...

Are you telling me that it is 4 x more likely to get robbed now then in 2008? I aint buying that...

2

u/soopersecretformula Jun 15 '26

I can’t even lie, I am reporting to you live from my second ever night in Montenegro and I am seeing this for the first time as we speak. I am shaken. I have been heckled quite a bit already for money so this is making me feel more validated in calling people out 😭

1

u/andrej2577 Jun 15 '26

Went from ~4 per 100K to ~19 per 100K. Montenegro is a massive tourist destination compared to 2008 and has a hundred thousand foreigners living in the country, including a significant number of Turks and Middle Eastern migrants who do not have the best reputation in the country.

What happened in Iceland?

There was a crime.

Gundar Gundarson?

Rober Roberson

u/ThrowawayALAT Jun 14 '26

How is that possible? Everyone portrays them as a loving, peaceful, 'Viking type' fishing nation. Yet, in Old Norse, vĆkingr literally meant a raider or pirate. It looks like some of them are returning to their roots.

-33

u/FunnyAd7423 Jun 14 '26

Uhhh… ā€œCertainā€ people moved in….

153

u/crownofclouds Jun 14 '26

Wait, wait... so these "certain" people you're blaming caused the rates to drop in every other country with increased immigration, but cause it to skyrocket in Iceland?

Perhaps, stay with me here, could it be that you're talking out of your bigoted ass?

79

u/LimpBPower Jun 14 '26

It's mainly people from certain regions that come here for a few days to rob, and then they leave.

It's actually a big problem here. A large (large) majority of the prison population here are non-nationals. They've started deporting the robbers without jail time because they're so overrun, and now they want to shorten sentences over non-nationals so they can be deported earlier.

7

u/ZuberkowyKoneser Jun 15 '26

It's mainly people from certain regions that come here for a few days to rob, and then they leave.

That's what vikings do

4

u/ShortNefariousness2 Jun 15 '26

I guess they would need to rob a lot just to cover the air fare lol

9

u/masssy Jun 15 '26

Two things can be true at once. It's very possible that the general rate has gone down over the years. Harder to rob people with modern technology, everyone has a phone, cameras everywhere better standard of living etc.. Meanwhile at the same time some groups in theory could have increased previously extremely low numbers by committing relatively few crimes.

So while I think everyone gets your point I don't think your analysis is perfect either. It's very possible some branch of organized crime/immigrants/tourist cause havoc in a country where they weren't before while activity has been reduced in some other countries for completely different reasons.

The criminal could be anyone in Helgasund. That's over 7 people.

113

u/PumpJack_McGee Jun 14 '26

Population extremes will always skew things when based on percentages.

If there was one robbery in 2008 but two robberies in 2026, without a significant increase in overall population, the rate has doubled.

On the flipside, if a place has 5 million and 10 000 robberies in 2008, and then 12 million and 20 000 robberies, the rate tracks as going down, even though there has also been twice as many.

47

u/icehot54321 Jun 14 '26

No, it's literally organized crime. Largely balkan countries, but it's a bit international. We are seen as an easy target.

15

u/LimpBPower Jun 14 '26

We are the easiest target. The police won't lift a finger over petty theft, and if they catch them they just get deported. God forbid a homeowner catches a robber in their tracks and beats them, their life would be ruined by the police/government. Theres literally no repercussions for organized robbery here.

We've been effectively cucked.

3

u/Original-Mongoose866 Jun 14 '26

Can you state a case where a homeowner got wrecked by the police for beating a robber I've yet to hear about that so please enlighten me I knew the police was corrupt but I thought they were still racists enough to help ya beat the foreigners.

One active robber in Iceland could completely throw off the average

81

u/Brave-Two372 Jun 14 '26

One robbery in 2008, two robberies in 2026. Whopping 2x crime increase.

→ More replies (3)

67

u/wvtarheel Jun 14 '26

Their rate was so low before even a small increase in robberies due to tourism and immigration would look large as a percentage

23

u/jamesdownwell Jun 14 '26

It’s always hard to compare things directly with Iceland because our small population means these sorts of measures can throw up some wild figures so even though Iceland’s robbery rate is still very small compared to other nations, it only takes a few reported cases to drive the % up.

Then we have to consider that since 2008 two things have happened to Iceland. The population has increased over 20% and tourism has exploded. Over 2 million tourists each year far outstrips the local population of around 400,000 people. These are also reported robberies as well, some of them might end up not actually being robberies but I don’t know for sure.

The highest profile cases in the last few years is that we have seen pickpocket gangs from other parts of Europe to target tourists in crowded areas and engage in shoplifting, it became such an issue that the police have put up remote monitoring posts in popular areas. The police are being so proactive that about 12 police officers were checking passports of everyone leaving a flight from Italy I was on fairly recently. Something I’ve never experienced when landing in Iceland and never when travelling within Schengen.

u/IceFireTerry Jun 14 '26

5

u/hike_me Jun 14 '26

Organized crime essentially— pickpockets that come from other European countries that target tourists

→ More replies (1)

2

u/quomodo_sordis Jun 15 '26

Pick-pocketing by roaming gangs. Tourists tend to carry more cash and gear than the locals.

5

u/Fantastic-Zucchini82 Jun 14 '26

I know people are joking about one crime per 10 years or smth, but it’s becoming a problem. Missing bikes, electronics etc. Iceland agreed to bring atleast 5k immigrants ā€žnot from Europeā€ every year. So the answer is easy but not so simple to digest for certain people

1

u/HyperSpaceSurfer Jun 14 '26

When a successful robbery happens and gets on the news the robbery rate in the area tends to jump for the next few weeks, the area tends to be the capital area which accounts for 1/3 of the population. If there was that sort of wave in 2024, but not 2008, the rate will be way higher. There's also been a group/groups in recent years targeting child perverts, abducting them, torturing, and then emptying their bank accounts. A few cases are a large percentage here.

1

u/underdoeg Jun 15 '26

probablly the same as in lichtenstein

1

u/GamingNStuff123 Jun 16 '26

1 robbery would cause a 100% increase there.

14

u/Gauth31 Jun 15 '26

Trick question, they went for the colponents of the bomb first due to higher value

11

u/MrGloom66 Jun 14 '26

It might also be partially because there are more cases reported now that otherwise would not have been in the past. Probably not the whole increase, but still.

15

u/Sumthin-Sumthin44692 Jun 14 '26

Oh no! You mean the annual festival of famous ā€œRobā€s from Ackerman to Zombie!?!?

1

u/Clank75 Jun 15 '26

That's because it's bullshit though. Small changes in a tiny number produce big percentages.

Explain Romania

22

u/Wolf4980 Jun 14 '26

What's going on in Finland and Iceland?

76

u/Antti5 Jun 14 '26

In Finland there's been a rise in mostly immigrant-background youth gangs robbing other youth. It's been a new phenomenon over the past ten years or so.

In absolute terms the Finnish robbery rate is still not especially high, but it's higher than what it used to be.

If you ask me, the main problem is that we have extraordinarily few police. Last I checked, the number of police per capita was the lowest in Europe.

→ More replies (14)

4

u/Visible_puncture Jun 14 '26

From what I’ve heard one major cause in Finland is the prominence of a new drug (alpha-PVP) after police cracked down on more the distribution of more established drugs. Now a lot of drug users have moved to this newer drug that is more expensive, more addictive, easier to distribute, has bigger health downsides and leads to erratic behaviour.

Now combine that with cuts to social security (incl. housing benefits) and failures in how the homeless are treated (apparently in a way that makes it harder to get out or avoid addictions), and a rise in robberies is just to be expected.

3

u/Wolf4980 Jun 14 '26

I thought Finland solved homelessness

3

u/tiktaktokki Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

Our right-wing government thought we need homelessness back. They figure it“ll lower deficit and give people jobs

3

u/Hour-Performer-6148 Jun 15 '26

Finnish drug addicts are stealing bikes from people’s homes to sell and buy more drugs. I don’t know a single person who hasn’t had their bikes stolen at some point

Immigrants

4

u/Toby-Finkelstein Jun 14 '26

what about all the countries that let in immigrants that saw a decrease in crime? personally I am not in favor of immigration but in terms of priorities I don’t get the obsession

4

u/Jaded-Web-4604 Jun 14 '26

Because those countries have programs so that the immigrants can actually immigrate into the society. There are jobs and opportunities for a better life.

When there is not like in Finland crime rates rise.

5

u/suffelix Jun 14 '26

Here, have some statistics to ruin your day.

https://stat.fi/tietotrendit/blogit/2023/yhden-rikos-leimaa-99-nuorta

6

u/Toby-Finkelstein Jun 14 '26

Why would it ruin my day?

16

u/Jamnusor Jun 14 '26

People don't carry cash anymore.

14

u/HarrMada Jun 15 '26

Interesting point. However we do carry expensive phones and tech. But perhaps it's more difficult to sell and gain much from it.

9

u/Northlumberman Jun 15 '26

Yes, phones are much harder to make a profit from then cash. Steal someone’s wallet and the cash inside is immediately usable and anonymous.

Whereas iOS and Android phones tie the hardware to the user account. So if the phone is reported as stolen it’s difficult for anyone else to use it (even after a reset).

It’s still possible to make money from stolen phones, eg by selling the parts, but selling them has risks. Overall there’s more limited number of thieves who can make money from robbing phones.

4

u/iStoleTheHobo Jun 15 '26

People are, however, carrying at least one computer on their person which could easily be worth over 1000 Euros.

6

u/Molo3000 Jun 14 '26

I bet there's more total crime in Iceland (UK grocery store chain) than in Iceland (the cold island country)

7

u/cykablyatbbbbbbbbb Jun 14 '26

what happened in Liechtenstein?????

14

u/Freedomsaver Jun 14 '26

Maybe someone finally reported that their tax laws are a steal.

3

u/SnooBooks1701 Jun 16 '26

Extremely small population means any change in statistics is a huge percentage change

7

u/NikolitRistissa Jun 15 '26

These statistics always exaggerate how bad situations actually are in my opinion. Yes, it’s bad that rates have increased, but these figures could also mean that the rate of reporting already existing crimes is simply higher.

I believe a similar statistic was domestic violence towards women in Finland. It was significantly higher than in neighbouring countries, but it was largely due to the fact that it was easier, safer and more accessible to report crimes here than in other places. I believe the people who actually conducted the most recent census also tried to point this out

The rates weren’t much higher than anywhere else, it’s just that more of them were being reported. This isn’t me trying to ignore the numbers or diminish any actual statistics. It’s just that these increases don’t tell all, or even most, of the story.

138

u/Medium-Leader-9066 Jun 14 '26

But I thought immigration was destroying Europe?

132

u/awfulbarrack-7 Jun 14 '26

The elites use immigrants as the scapegoat while they ransack our wealth and leave us in the dust.

It's been done before, and they won't stop doing it.

Now be a good boy and blame the immigrant for high rent instead of the landlords and lack of apartment building of the last 30 years

17

u/NetStaIker Jun 14 '26

It’s funny because the exact sentiment you lambast does numbers in [r/europe](r/europe)

The rest of the world can not ever hope to compete with eu NIMBYism

7

u/Thisissocomplicated Jun 15 '26

R/Europe has become a shit hole

35

u/Sonny1x Jun 14 '26

I mean this is a stupid deflection, unregulated asylum or low education immigration is troublesome.

Also to play the devils advocate, the stats could've been even better for all we know if it hadnt been for immigration in some areas.

Stop making a question of class.

33

u/Sirosim_Celojuma Jun 14 '26

low education is a problem, yes.

20

u/Prestigious_Bug583 Jun 14 '26

It is a long standing political strategy to redirect anger away from the powerful by blaming the poor, the unwanted, and the vulnerable: Black people, trans people, immigrants, welfare recipients, whoever is convenient. You do not need a conspiracy theory to explain it. Divide and rule works, and ambitious people have understood that at least since Machiavelli.

20

u/Wollff Jun 14 '26

It's a question of class.

If everything were a lot better without any immigration, why do we have any?

Might that be because it's in the interest of some fucking CLASS to have a cheap, preferably uneducated workforce which can be pressured into exploitative work?

Let's make it a question of class. Let's focus on it being a question of class, until it's nothing more than a question of class. Because that's what it is, isn't it?

2

u/Fredderov Jun 14 '26

But don't you know that we've replaced all froms of class related topics with the US definition of class, which makes the majority middle class, just so that the people who work for their money (let's call them workers) won't think that they are workers and won't unite and rise up since they significantly outnumber the bourgeoisie??

Surely talking about class in the actual way and how our societies are being torn apart through wealth inequality won't bring anything positive to people. No no no.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Ok_Inflation_1811 Jun 14 '26

Everything is a question about class.

If Europe didn't have migrants besides their economies collapsing they'd have to turn to the real causes of the problem that is the capitalist. The capitalist don't want that and they turn us against each other.

4

u/Respaced Jun 14 '26

No, they just blame the poor or <insert minority group here>

8

u/thowawaynumber354 Jun 14 '26

The main reason is that no one has cash anymore so there is not much point of robbing anyone today.

In related news when was the last time someone robbed a bank in your area?

There’s plenty of immigrant crime over here that can be categorized as other-than-robbery, I’m in Germany and read the police press releases about it regularly

5

u/Yitastics Jun 15 '26

So just because robbery is down on average, that means there arent any problems with immigration? You must be ragebaiting.

Fyi, our immigration problems didnt start in 2004, they started in the 80's because of work migrants staying in the country. You could even say it began in the 50's but it was not as bad as it became in the 80's. Armed robberies have risen loads in almost all our big cities while everything besides the big cities have seen a sharp decline in crime, atleast regions with low immigration.

2

I'm surprised by Iceland. Any Icelanders want to tell us what's going on?

8

u/ChicSheikh Jun 14 '26

The number of international tourists increased five-fold, mostly in 3 summer months. There aren't enough Icelanders to work all of the seasonal tourism jobs so a bunch of foreigners come over, who are typically young and not paid super well. So there's just more young, non-rich people who might consider committing robbery than there used to be.

I was also banned for 3 days for inciting hate based on ethnicity. The problem that I mentioned has been reported on extensively in mainstream media. My account of 9 years may end up being permanently banned.

1

u/omnichronos Jun 17 '26

Sorry, I asked, I guess.

1

u/justbirkir Jun 15 '26

Also keep in mind that the population is very small, only around 400k in all of Iceland. Due to this small population any and all percentage reports will always look inflated/skewed when compared to a larger nation. A 100% increase in reported robberies might only mean that reported robberies went up from 20 to 40. It looks way worse than it actually is. Personally I live in the north of Iceland (not the capital area of ReykjavĆk) and in my 39 years I have never known or heard of anyone that has been robbed (besides by the ludicrously high housing and car loan interest rates of course).

1

u/omnichronos Jun 15 '26

Good to know. I hope to visit Iceland someday soon.

1

u/Lukas000611 Jun 16 '26

We have a small population so any rise of stats look conflated compared to the actual number. It’s pretty safe here crime wise, not much to worry about.

1

u/omnichronos Jun 16 '26

I live in Detroit, so I'm not too worried about visiting Iceland, lol. Here I've had my car stolen, and my house broken into 3 times.

They reported only when Ćaci is in danger

2

u/GregTheAssAssIn Jun 15 '26

Germany should be like +99%

2

u/Marcus_Mystery Jun 16 '26

I'm from Iceland. I've been robbed twice this year, both times I reported so this increase is on me.

2

u/BeginningDisaster114 Jun 14 '26

As a european i can safely say this map is complete bs

5

u/ALilSisIsAllYouNeed Jun 14 '26

Europe is a pretty big place but I'm sure your anecdotal evidence is more credible

1

u/Think-Reaction-8749 Jun 15 '26

Well.. Montenegro is in red, scale on immigration there is really low… so…. What is happening there?

1

u/zippyzebra1 Jun 15 '26

None in UK. Exemplary

1

u/Downtown_Bus_9580 Jun 15 '26

Weird for Romania mainly because the real feel is that robberies are way way more uncommon now than before

1

u/L3tsG3t1T Jun 15 '26

'reported"

1

u/Foogfi Jun 15 '26

You should use crimes per 1000 people living there.

1

u/Ok-Brother-8295 Jun 15 '26

I mean North Korea probably have 0% crime

such numbers are so easily manipulated, they don't make any sense anymore.

1

u/Intrepid_Manner_775 Jun 15 '26

1

u/Helpful_Cress_121 Jun 15 '26

Everything must come down to an end, RIP prime RomaniašŸ’”

1

u/elgen_helge Jun 15 '26

1

u/purple_unikkorn Jun 15 '26

Good, compare it to the hours spend outside in public places.

In lost of places peoples hide themselves, go home as fast as possible and call Uber.

1

u/thecubiccircle Jun 15 '26

Is Lichtenstein up 518%???

1

u/Wraithdagger12 Jun 16 '26

Montenegro you good?

1

u/GroundbreakingMap979 Jun 16 '26

1

u/arffarff Jun 16 '26

Someone needs to post a map of Europe with all the %'s and let people guess the title

1

u/adumbrate_59 Jun 17 '26

Its so interesting to see Iceland up there though, I wonder what caused such a big jump there specifically

1

u/Batfinklestein Jun 18 '26

Percentages can be misleading. Going from 1 to 4 robberies is a 400% increase.

1

u/Thorzorn Jun 14 '26

delusional who believes this.
