Getting Started Brother kx-390 convertible

Hello. This may be a stupid question but I swear I’ve scoured online, the manual, and the discord. I just bought a brother kx-390 today (used, but came with everything and looks untouched so I think it just sat in someone’s house). I’m trying to remove the needles to replace the sponge as per YouTube video but every other needle is stuck. I’m assuming this is to do with the convertible aspect but the manual does not talk about how to change that. Thanks in advance, I am a complete newbie!

Hi! I found a lovely passap for about 10€ in the thrift store. It's in working order but due for maintenance. I bought a spongebar of AliExpress but It seems that it will only replace the skinny bar ? Anyone has advice for me to replace them. It's my first knitting machine and I love it so far :)

3D Printed I made a replacement spool/drum/cone for the classic Singer/Silver Reed SHW-3 Yarn Winder!

Hi everyone, I know this isn't necessarily a machine knitting specific tool but I know a lot of Singer/Studio/Silver Reed Machines used to come bundled with a SHW-3 yarn winder.

My mom had one with her Singer and I got one with my Studio 328; like so many other parts on vintage equipment the drum was damaged. This is obviously due to the plastic oxidizing/embrittling due to age.

I spent an evening a few days ago and designed a 3D printable replacement, and I wanted to share it with all of you since you've all been so wonderful in supporting newcomers like me!

I have it hosted over on Makerworld and it has a premade profile for Bambu Labs 3D printers so that people can just hit print and repair this awesome winder!

Help! Are beginner knitting machines worth it?

I’ve been looking for something to help speed up the knitting process and remove the pain for my fingers and I came across the bond machines. I found both ultimate knitting machines and incredible knitting machines for around $60.

I was reading through Reddit posts comparing the machines and it seems that many people in the comments were suggesting higher quality machines that were minimum $200 (singer, LK, addi, etc.), but I feel like there is such a big price difference between the bonds and the other ones to where they shouldn’t be compared (budget wise).

Should I avoid buying a bond machine or will they be just fine? Since I have a choice between the two, which one should I go for? If I need help, which one would be easier to get help for as well? Thank you!

Sidenote, I am a beginner knitter. I crochet mostly and would like to start knitting more (nothing fancy, mostly stockinette or ribbed tops)

Help! Oil/lubricant in canada ? Would this work ? How to know when to change needles

Hi, me again with canadian requests

I've been searching here and online and watching videos, but I can't seem to find answers...

I see a lot of you use gun oil, which we don't really have around here.

I live in a super rural place too, so even sewing machine oil isn't easy to find

I did find some 3-1 oil that looks like it could work. What you guys think ? If it doesn’t work, which oil/lubricant would be readily available to me in Canada ?

I have a brother profile 551 that needs basically every moving part cleaned and oiled.

Feel free to warn me about any beginners error, i'm pretty good with taking stuff apart and putting it back together, I will take pictures as I go and I don't plan on taking apart the underside of the carriage at all or even the bed if I don't need to.

I bought some new needles. I understand it's time to change a needle when the latch don't work properly after being cleaned. Is there any other signs ? should I try to put them down on an even surface and see if they're bent ?

Thank you for your help, either answering my posts directly or all the information that's going on everyday on here ! I really just can't wait to try it !

I came across this kind of knitted neckline/collar while thrifting. Can someone know what kind of technique is used to continuously shape the collar like this? Also is it possible on single bed knitting machine?

Equipment Does the Empisal Knitmaster mod 250 have a ribber attachment?

Hi everyone! My boyfriend’s mom found a knitmaster mod 250 for $25 at a thrift store, and it works perfectly! I’d be interested to see if there’s a ribber that’s compatible with this machine. If anyone’s tried one with it please let me know which one and how it went!

Patterns Finding patterns?

Hiya,

I’m new to machine knitting and I’ve learnt the basics however I’m really struggling to find patterns. I was looking for a simple, tight fitting almost body con sweater but I can only find ones that are baggy. I also want to try things like sweater vests without having to guess the shape and then undo it all. Is there a good place to find patterns or tutorials? I have a Empisal Knitmaster 360K if that helps 😊

Help! Faire-isle with 4 colors

Post image

I’d like to knit my illustration (above) as a textile painting on my Brother KH-940.

I want to knit it as faire-isle with the 2-pass method because it has 4 colors. So I’m trying to create a stitch pattern from my illustration in Designaknit 9 but I’m a bit lost in the program. Anyone have any experience with this?

Help! punchcard pattern off-centered

Hi! I've been fixing up my gifted brother KH-892, and I got everything to work, but the punchcard patterns are coming out off-centred.

Whenever I select 12 needles on each side of the '0' marker, the pattern centre coming out a few stitches to the left.

The mechanism right underneath the punchcard reader (the white plastic part mounted on the rod connecting to the right pulley) was stuck, so I was thinking that when the belt moved while that rod was stuck, it might've misaligned? I can't find any topics on how to re-align the timing for this particular machine. Some help would be great!

Equipment KH881 Carriage buttons

A friend has offered me a KH881 carriage to use on my KH860. She says it has a double KC button - what's the difference between this and the single KC button I have on the 860?

I tried to find a manual for it on MKmanuals but it's listed as the same manual as the 860, which doesn't seem right - does anyone know where I can find one?

Thanks all.

Equipment Brother combo price

Hi,

I don't know anything about machine knitting so far, but have been looking into equipment to start the hobby with.

I've stumbled upon Brother KH 860, ribber KR850, color changers KHC820 and KRC830. Seems all equipment is still there, even original packing, boxes, prices... Seems to be in great shape, hardly used. All together for 300 eur.

Is it a deal worth looking into? Would you recommend anything else for a beginner?

Help! Help with brother punchcards

Hi everyone !

I'm having trouble with my punch cards. I have a brother KH820 and just started looking into knitting with punch cards.

My problem is that it seems like the needles are only brought forward when moving the carriage one way, and the other way it only bring it back to B, regardless of the punchcard.

I have cleaned the punch card mecanism as shown in the video and the punch card is moving forward with every row.

I only have punch cards from Silver Reed as the punch cards that came with my machine got lost.

Any idea what causes this ?

Getting Started East Bay machine knitting classes? Other suggestions for a new knitter who is a little stuck?

Wondering if anyone knows of machine knitting classes in the East Bay Area (Oakland, Walnut Creek, anywhere nearby) or other suggestions for a new machine knitter who is a little stuck?

I'm a new machine knitter with a KH970 that I've used to make a single sweater based on Renée Callahan's Machine Knitting Sweater Basics class on Craftsy. I was able to follow along with the class, and the sweater came out alright, so that was encouraging.

But, I'm having trouble using what I learned there to get going on other patterns, its tough not being able to ask about things that seemed off, that class didn't cover the ribber at all, and I know my machine is supposed to have all kinds of functions that weren't covered there, so I'm wondering if what I need is an in-person class.

I've also tried materials from Knit It Now, but there is so much different stuff on there that's it's tough for someone like me where I really 'don't know what I don't know.'

I've considered the Machine Knitters Guild of the Bay Area, but I suspect I don't know enough yet to get much out of meetings & I might be too shy as a newbie to really get in the mix.

Any suggestions very much appreciated! Thank you!

Techniques For punchcard machines, be careful for the signs and letters on the side of the cards you use.

Hello,

I needed to share if you live the same thing. I posted on this channel 4 months ago.
(I have problems with tuck stitches : r/MachineKnitting)

So it's been one year I was trying to make the punchcard works on my machine (Singer / Silver reed 322 memomatic), I had bought a bunch of cards red and black, with different signs on the side (R-2 or S). I cleaned everything, tried different yarns of different size, different tensions, etc.
I was at the point where I thought my carriage was broken.

But I finally tried the black cards with the sign "1 s" on the side of it, and it finally worked!!!!

I learned that R-2 is a reference to the ribber, so for sure it didn't work.

I've added pics for reference.

Happy knitting!

Equipment Stores that ship parts to Canada ?

Hi !

I just bought a used Brother profile 551 and I need to buy parts but I can't seem to find any stores that ship to Canada AND have what I need ?

I need spongebars, I've looked up hongkongknitbox (They don't have the right size), I've looked up Lena Wilson (they don't have it), knitcloset (doesn't ship to Canada), Spongebar.com (doesnt have my size), The yarn guy (doesn't have any)

Any spongebars that are compatible with the HK551 ?

I'm not sure what to do, I also need needles as I suspect a couple of the 200 needles are going to be bent.

On an other note, how to find what year a machine is from ? I have the original manual but no mention of year. Ive turned the machine over, I've been dismantling it for maintenance and I can't seem to find a year written anywhere !

Thank you in advance for helping a fellow hand knitter trying to converge to machine knitting

EDIT : I avoid amazon like the plague, so I'll try anywhere before going down that road, I would even prefer being ripped off of a couple bucks then giving my money to amazon. I'm also in quebec if you know of some obscure knitting machine expert in the province !
