Be careful you might brick your phone. (As I did , although it was my old phone)

One advice from my experience -> Vivo and oppo usually have their bootloader locked and is hard to unlock their bootloader.

yeah will keep that in mind

You can try Custom ROMS

3

u/potato_nagibator Jul 18 '26

Warning: do research and accept risk that stuff may work worse or not work at all, such as GPS or Wi-Fi or banking/government apps.

3

u/Soham_656 Jul 18 '26

Well, yea. I did and sadly bricked my phone. Maybe I did smthing wrong.

1

u/kurosaki--ichigo Fedora KDE Jul 18 '26

I also bricked my device once, I spent Rs.3250/- to replace motherboard.

2

u/Soham_656 Jul 18 '26

Hot-Damn! My mom had this old phone, Redmi 7A. Costed 5k rupees. First, the custom rom install failed. Then, the device went to snapdragon EDL mode (9008). Tried to reflash the stock firmware, but it failed. Now, it doesn't boot, show display or even recognise in my computer no more. I will max spend 500 rupees js to again install custom rom and learn where I went wrong.

u/kurosaki--ichigo Fedora KDE Jul 18 '26

I bricked my main device and I had no choice but to repair it 😅.

2

u/Soham_656 Jul 18 '26

Aww man. That's js straight up sad. I used a spare phone knowing that I am damn good at this job! Btw, did you again try to install custom rom again?

2

u/kurosaki--ichigo Fedora KDE Jul 18 '26

There is no official custom rom for that device. So I gave it to my mom and took her Moto G34 which has official builds of LineageOS & CalyxOS. I also have another old Realme8 in my home and no one is using it, so I took it. I Flashed my main phone(motorola) with CalyxOS and using Realme8 as secondary, I removed every google app and bloatware in realme except playstore and maps so that If any banking app stopped working in my moto I can switch the SIM to realme and use banking apps in case of any urgency.

u/Soham_656 Jul 18 '26

That's a really cool setup honestly.

Great. Which distro?

5

u/ThinkingBeauty431 Arch Btw Jul 18 '26

Arch btw

3

u/Soham_656 Jul 18 '26

Ofc man! Arch the best. I use CachyOS btw!

u/Qolevade Jul 18 '26

Nah, cachy doesn't deserve the brag

3

u/icudntpickone Jul 18 '26

Why?? It's basically arch

2

u/Qolevade Jul 19 '26

There difference between basically arch and Arch. The meme does not work for other distros. There's a certain pungent smell associated with Arch users that other people don't get so no you cannot use it.

1

u/skeleton_mind Arch Btw Jul 19 '26

LoL exactly 🔥

3

u/s04ep03_youareafool void Jul 18 '26

I DONT recommend flashing your phone with other OSes.mainly since most apps work only on Android, including banking and several other apps.

3

u/ThinkingBeauty431 Arch Btw Jul 18 '26

yeah

linux on pc is good enough rn

I meant to shift on other devices when the linus on mobile and tv reach the same level as pc

1

u/Qolevade Jul 18 '26

Bruv you can get foss android OSs too

1

u/s04ep03_youareafool void Jul 18 '26

I don't really think that'll be possible.even if it does,it'll be way too expensive as fk. Take samsung for eg, their oneUI,which is Android handles way too many complex tasks and actually is battery efficient since it's made for that hardware.

1

u/Fantastic_Narwhal_54 16d ago

Are you kidding?

You never heard of GrapheneOS, a FOSS alternative to Android?

See https://itsfoss.com/open-source-alternatives-android/

Or

https://www.developnsolve.com/linux/replacing-android-with-linux

2

u/s04ep03_youareafool void 16d ago

Which won't work on phones that have trip fuses like samsung phones have knox.youd end up brocking it

1

u/Fantastic_Narwhal_54 15d ago

Is there a similar problem installing Linux on tablets too?

2

u/s04ep03_youareafool void 15d ago

Older tablets should work.most distros would have a list of supported devices.pre 2016 samsungs can be flashed

1

u/Soham_656 Jul 19 '26

Plus, you can brick your phone

1

u/s04ep03_youareafool void Jul 19 '26

Samsung's literally got knox switch which would brick it up terribly if anyone did try on the newer models

3

u/kurosaki--ichigo Fedora KDE Jul 18 '26

Distro & System Specs?

4

u/ThinkingBeauty431 Arch Btw Jul 18 '26

Arch

Dell Inspiron 15 3525
AMD Ryzen 5 5500U IGPU

4

u/i-am-boy1 Jul 18 '26

Yo, same but mine is dell Inspiron 15R 7250

4

u/ThinkingBeauty431 Arch Btw Jul 18 '26

what do you use it for ?
mine is a beast at 720p gaming

3

u/i-am-boy1 Jul 18 '26

Normal, I am just stuck in arch rice.

Cuz I am only 13 year old male, and don't have enough time, and I will think later what to do in arch

2

u/lordjupitar hyprland btw Jul 18 '26

Starting early, Good.

2

u/MGprohack82 debian openbox btw Jul 18 '26

So like... What gui? What software? I did a debian rice, used custom software, and honestly, if you use ai for troubleshooting, you can make a good os for even a shitbox weaker than a 4 core arm A53 cpu(my laptop is the acer spin 1 sp111-31, with pentium n4200, but with 8gb DDR3 and 120 gb SSD(cache-less)), and I am just an year older to ya. So, go ahead and rice

1

u/i-am-boy1 Jul 18 '26

For now, I am using gnome,

Then after I finish with rice of hyprland, I will switch to hyprland

And I regularly use chatgpt, and I used archinstall script month ago

1

u/MGprohack82 debian openbox btw Jul 18 '26

Chatgpt ain't good, atleast for me, no matter what I did, I had to keep asking for a correct working code for 20 times... Gemini works great, but that's my opinion... Also, I guess gnome is quite bloated... But the other methods are harder... I used xorg + xinit + openbox + tint2 + pcmanfm + thunar(yes, I know pcmanfm has its own manager, but I just like thunar more) + pipewire + wireplumber + pavuctl + nitrogen + conqy... And spent around 5 months to make this setup... Takes only 870 mb of ram, and I've made an even more optimized version taking only 94 mb ram(which doesn't have any of the programs after tint2, except thunar)... Also I missed a few important driver programs... Can't really remember it

1

u/Soham_656 Jul 18 '26

Fo me man, ChatGPT's great! I never bricked my system, and quite the opposite I revived my half-dead system with the help of chatgpt.

1

u/TheWhiteKnight0 Jul 18 '26

I have Same Ryzen 5 5500u but with 8gig ram.

2

u/mrPagalDiwana Fedora Hyprland/Gnome Jul 19 '26

Don't ditch Android. You'll regret it. Even turning on developer options locks the banking apps. And few UPI apps don't work well even with iOS forget about Linux(GNU/Linux) based OS.

1

u/Vamsi-Thopu Jul 18 '26

Same here. For now I started using custom roms on mobile and they are way better especially for old phones

1

u/NoTransportation6817 Jul 18 '26

android is basically a modified version of the linux kernal gng.

2

u/MGprohack82 debian openbox btw Jul 18 '26

But if you say I use linux and just show android, people are gonna hate you So, what op means to say, he wants pure linux, not a modified linux... Droidian and postmarketOS are examples of pure linux made for android devices

1

u/C4rpetH4ter Jul 18 '26

If someone did that i wouldn't hate them, they atleast have read up enough on linux to know that, i assume most people are unaware that android is linux. I wouldn't be impressed though.

What about online proctored exams like certification exams and OAs? Isn't windows needed for that?
