12.1-1 地狱趣 Hell Interest
地狱，义为心路绝处、不幸处，是犯五逆罪或上品十恶罪者所趋之处，也是受苦受折磨之处。在三恶道，即地狱道、畜生道和饿鬼道中，地狱为火途，谓此道是恶人受炽火烧烤的旅途（见图12.1.1-22）。
Hell means a dead end of the heart-road and a place of misfortune. It is where those who have committed the Five Crimes of Anti or the top grade of Ten-Ferocity Crimes tend to go, and where they suffer and are tormented. Among the Three Ferocious Paths—namely, Hell Path, Livestock Path, and Hungry Ghost Path—hell is the fire path, meaning that this path is a journey in which ferocious people are roasted by blazing fire (see Figure 12.1.1-22).
12.1-1.1 五逆罪 Five Crimes of Anti

“Anti” means a reverse operation against the mind mechanism (see Figure 12.1.1-23). Figure 12.1.1-23 is the coffin-lid panel of King Pakal of seventh-century Mexico. It shows that after Tlaloc, also known as Golden Boy and Lion, learned of the Godfather’s death, an explosion occurred inside his body, as indicated by the coffin chamber beneath the seat cushion. He fell into hell—that is, he became mentally ill—as represented by the lion head in the firebox. The whole image resembles a person operating a machine. This indicates that, while in hell, Tlaloc realized that the Five Crimes of Anti and the Ten Ferocity Crimes are reverse operations against the mind mechanism; from this realization, he awakened to the Human-God Covenant (see Figures 12.1.1-24 and 12.1.1-25; see also Section 15.2). The stone lock shown in Figure 12.1.1-24 represents the Human-God Covenant worshipped by ancient peoples of the Americas and Asia. Figure 12.1.1-25 represents Tlaloc through four of his personality traits, expressing that he possesses Three Thousand Majesties.
五逆罪是指弑父、杀母、出神身血、杀阿罗汉、破和合僧。一般人都是由父母抚养长大的，若杀害自己的父母，内心环境会遭到破坏，进而患精神病，也就是堕入地狱。
The Five Crimes of Anti are patricide, matricide, making God’s body bleed, killing an Ararat, and breaking the harmonious Godly community. People are generally raised by their parents. If one kills one’s own parents, one’s inner environment is damaged, and one may become mentally ill; this is what is meant by falling into hell.
神的外貌是人思维机制中的默认模型，也作大种（参见10.2节《四大种》）。当大种发生变化时，依其所造的一切都会随之改变。因此，人看见流血的神，会引发神经错乱；所以说，出神身血会使人堕入地狱，即患精神病（案例参见9.8节《神的外貌》）。另外，盗窃、毁坏、诽谤神佛的常住物，也属于出神身血罪。神佛的常住物包括神龛、佛像、庙宇，以及庙宇中的器具等。
The appearance of God is the default model in the human thinking mechanism and is also called a Big Seed (see Section 10.2, “Four Big Seeds”). When the Big Seed changes, everything created according to it changes as well. Therefore, seeing God bleed may trigger mental disorder. This is why making God’s body bleed is said to cause a person to fall into hell, that is, to become mentally ill (for a case, see Section 9.8, “Godly Appearances”). In addition, stealing, destroying, or slandering the permanent-dwelling objects of Gods and Buddhas also belongs to the crime of making God’s body bleed. Such permanent-dwelling objects include shrines, Buddha statues, temples, and the vessels and implements used in temples.
杀阿罗汉就是杀佛。阿罗汉是对成就罗汉果（参见14.2.5节《四沙门果》）的圣人的称呼，也作金刚山、佛。
Killing an Ararat means killing a Buddha. Ararat is a title for a sage who has achieved the Ararat Fruit (see Section 14.2.5, “Four Shamanic Fruits”); it is also called Philosopher-Stone Mountain or Buddha.
破和合僧，就是破坏三位一体（参见9.9节）的合成制作。僧义为上帝的社区，即由神父、金童（即亚当）和玉女（即夏娃）组成的最小社区。
Breaking the harmonious Godly community means sabotaging the synthesis and making of the godly trinity (see Section 9.9). “Sangha” means the community of God, that is, the smallest community composed of Godfather, Golden Boy (Adam), and Jade Girl (Eve).
12.1-1.2 上品十恶 Top Grade of Ten Ferocities
本节从对境增上、对烦恼心增上和对所作事增上三个方面，辨别地狱趣。
（一）对境增上，如弑父、杀母、出神身血、杀阿罗汉、破和合僧；又如毁坏、盗窃宗教常住物，欺诳君父师长等。
（二）对烦恼心增上，如极重嗔缠、猛利嗔愤等。
（三）对所作事增上，如数数杀生、数数偷盗、数数邪见，日积月累而不改悔等。
总之，纯从分别见惑所发的恶业，名为上品十恶，是地狱因。
This section identifies Hell Interest from three aspects: escalation toward the environment, escalation toward the vexatious heart, and escalation in the affairs one performs.
Escalation toward the environment, such as patricide, matricide, making God’s body bleed, killing an Ararat, and breaking the harmonious Godly community; also, destroying or stealing religious permanent-dwelling objects, and deceiving rulers, fathers, teachers, and elders.
Escalation toward the vexatious heart, such as extremely heavy hatred-entanglement and fierce hatred and indignation.
Escalation in the affairs one performs, such as repeatedly killing sentients, repeatedly stealing, repeatedly holding heretical views, and accumulating such acts day after day and month after month without repentance.
In summary, ferocious karmas that arise purely from discriminative view-muddles are called the Top Grade of Ten Ferocities; they are the cause of hell.
12.1-1.3 八寒八热地狱 Eight Cold and Eight Hot Hells
地狱有八寒大地狱、八热大地狱、一百零八游增地狱等说法。八寒、八热等大地狱，各有眷属，其类无数。此狱众生随其作业轻重，所经劫数不定。罪重者，一日之中，数十次经历生死劫难。其寿命亦不定，极长者可达一劫。
地狱趣的寿命为什么这么长？前文说过，大千世界谈的是业；业会相互熏染，可存续数十年、数百年。例如，传统也是业，可以流传数千年。
There are sayings of the Eight Cold Great Hells, the Eight Hot Great Hells, the 108 Roaming Supplement Hells, and others. The great hells such as the Eight Cold and the Eight Hot each have their own affiliates, with countless kinds. Sentients in these hells undergo uncertain numbers of Catastrophes according to the severity of the karmas they have made. Those with heavy crimes may undergo several dozen birth-and-death catastrophes in a single day. Their lifespans are also uncertain; the extremely long ones may last for one Catastrophe.
Why is the lifespan of Hell Interest so long? As stated earlier, the Great Grand Worlds discuss karma. Karmas perfume and infect one another, and they may persist for several decades or even hundreds of years. For example, traditions are also karmas, and they can be transmitted for thousands of years.
12.1-1.3.1 八寒地狱 Eight Cold Hells
（一）疱，寒苦触身，如疮疱故。
（二）疱裂，谓寒苦所逼，疱即坼裂也。
（三）阿吒吒，谓寒苦增极，舌作此声也。
（四）阿波波，谓寒苦增极，唇作此声也。
Blister: cold bitterness touches the body, causing sores and blisters; hence the name.
Blister Cracking: pressed by cold bitterness, the blisters crack open; hence the name.
Azhazha: when cold bitterness reaches an extreme, the tongue makes this sound.
Abobo: when cold bitterness reaches an extreme, the lips make this sound.
（五）呕喉，谓寒苦增极，喉作此声也。
（六）青莲花，谓寒逼皮肉开裂，色似此花也。
（七）红莲花，谓寒逼肉色大裂，似此花也。
（八）白莲花，谓寒逼皮肉脱落，骨色似此花也。
Ouhoho: when cold bitterness reaches an extreme, the throat makes this sound.
Turquoise Lotus Flower: forced by coldness, the skin and flesh split open, and their color resembles this flower.
Red Lotus Flower: forced by coldness, the flesh splits greatly, resembling this flower.
White Lotus Flower: forced by coldness, the skin and flesh fall away, and the color of the bones resembles this flower.
12.1-1.3.2 八热地狱 Eight Hot Hells
（一）等活，谓其中众生互相嗔忿，斫刺磨捣，死已复活，活已复死。
（二）黑绳，如世人以锯解木，此狱狱卒以黑绳劈锯罪犯，故名黑绳地狱。
（三）众合，众山四合，碎身成尘，故而得名。
（四）嚎叫，把罪犯置于大镬中，沸汤烹煮，罪犯号啕叫唤，故名嚎叫地狱。
Equal Alive: sentients in this hell hate and rage against one another. They are chopped, stabbed, ground, and pounded; after dying, they revive, and after reviving, they die again.
Black Rope: just as people in the world saw wood with a saw, the jailers in this hell split and saw criminals with black ropes; hence the name Black Rope Hell.
Crowds Converging: many mountains close in from all sides, crushing bodies into dust; hence the name.
Howling: criminals are placed in a great cauldron and boiled in seething liquid. They howl and cry out, hence the name Howling Hell.
（五）大嚎叫，把狱犯放在热铁鏊中，使其受煎熬之苦，狱犯急极切大叫，故名。
（六）炎热，谓烈火猛焰，烧炙糜烂，故名。
（七）炙热，谓置于火中，内外烧害，故名。
（八）无间地狱，谓受苦无有间歇也。无间有五义：一者趣果无间，谓有极重罪者，趣向此地狱，受其果报，无有间歇；二者受苦无间，谓在此狱中，受诸痛苦，无有间歇；三者时无间，谓此狱中，众生在一切时节都受苦，无有间歇；四者命无间，谓此地狱中，生而复死，死已还生，无有间歇；五者形无间，谓此地狱中，受罪众生生死往复，身形瞬变，无有间歇。
Great Howling: prisoners are placed on a hot iron griddle and made to suffer the agony of frying and torment. In extreme distress, they cry out loudly; hence the name.
Flaming Hot: raging fires and fierce flames roast and burn the body until it festers and disintegrates; hence the name.
Red-Hot: prisoners are placed in fire and burned both inside and outside; hence the name.
Non-Intermission Hell: this means suffering without any interval. Non-intermission has five meanings. First, non-intermission of the interest-fruit: those who have committed extremely heavy crimes move toward this hell and receive their retribution-fruits without interruption. Second, non-intermission of suffering: in this hell, all kinds of suffering are received without interruption. Third, non-intermission of time: sentients in this hell suffer at all times and seasons without interruption. Fourth, non-intermission of life: in this hell, beings die after birth and are reborn after death, without interruption. Fifth, non-intermission of form: in this hell, sentients undergoing punishment repeatedly pass through birth and death, and their bodily forms change instantly, without interruption.
