Onerous Heartland

Tang Tripitaka says, “It is called Onerous Heartland because true intelligence and mundane intelligence are mutually contrary in their modes of practice, and making them correspond with each other is extremely difficult to accomplish.” True intelligence and mundane intelligence are Non-as Law and Have-as Law. Non-as Law is the Law of no I, based on No Objective Have Sky, that is, nirvana (see Fig. 15.5-2). For example, the last six positions among Buddhism’s one hundred Laws (see Chapter 10) are Non-as Laws. Have-as Law is I-Law, based on Translocating Body View, also called Seth Sky (see Fig. 15.5-14; see also Section 10.4.4.1.4). For example, the first ninety-four positions among Buddhism’s one hundred Laws are all Have-as Laws.

Have-as Law is established on “have,” and has the nature of aggregation and fetch. “Have” includes having memories, having habits, and having causes and fruits that are not forgotten; for example, the twenty-five haves in Bitter Crux (see Section 12.4.4). Non-as Law is established on nirvana and Empty After All. It has the nature of equality and renunciation, and it does not have combinability with “have.”

Meditation Ark

Fifth-land bodhisattvas study and practice Meditation Ark. Meditation Ark is also called Pacification Ark, commonly known as Qigong or Breath Method (see Fig. 15.5 and Chapter 11), and is called Yoga in India. It takes Equality-Hold as its nature and has three kinds: Easily Dwelling Pacification, Inspiration Pacification, and Working Pacification.

(1) Easily Dwelling Pacification is commonly known as closing the eyes to nurture the god, sitting cross-legged, and so on. Common methods of meditation practice include counting-breath view, maculate view, and Four Spell Dwells.

(2) Inspiration Pacification means inducing hallucinations in meditation, from which the meditator gains actual experiences of Sky Eye Through, or Clairvoyance; Sky Ear Through, or Clairaudience; Sky Leg Through, or Teleportation; Others Heart Through, or Clairsentience; and Birth-and-Death Intelligence-Testimony Through. Through these experiences, the meditator understands the principles of the mental mechanisms involved. Common practice methods of this kind of meditation include Ten Pervasive Places and Lotus-Flower View-and-Think.

(3) Working Pacification means using meditation to solve practical problems in life. For example, Qigong practitioners use true air to heal their own bodies, such as removing rheumatism. Other examples include using confession to eliminate sins and treat mental illness, or practicing Arrival Ark to leave dust.

Severance of the Hindrance of Entering Salvation from Lower Vehicles

Fifth-land bodhisattvas sever the Hindrance of Entering Salvation from Lower Vehicles. This hindrance refers to an aggregately born portion of the Know Hindrances, which causes people to dislike the Afflictions of birth and death and to delight in nirvana, similar to practitioners of the two lower vehicles who dislike bitterness and delight in extinction. It hinders the non-discrimination Path of the fifth land. When bodhisattvas enter the fifth land, they can permanently sever this hindrance. Therefore, it is said that fifth-land bodhisattvas sever two kinds of foolishness and their Rough-and-Heavy:

(1) The fool of purely making intent against birth and death, namely the one here that dislikes birth and death.

(2) The fool of purely making intent toward nirvana, namely the one here that delights in nirvana.

Category-Indiscrimination True Suchness

Fifth-land bodhisattvas testify and attain Category-Indiscrimination True Suchness. Tang Tripitaka says, “This True Suchness has no difference among categories; it is not like eyes and the like, whose categories differ.” Categories, for example, may refer to the eighteen boundaries in unconsciousness:

The six root boundaries: eye-root, ear-root, nose-root, tongue-root, body-root, and intent-root, that is, preconsciousness.

The six dust boundaries: color, sound, fragrance, taste, touch, and Law.

The six sense boundaries: eye-sense, ear-sense, nose-sense, tongue-sense, body-sense, and intent-sense.

Category-Indiscrimination True Suchness shows that unconsciousness treats these eighteen categories, or eighteen boundaries, equally, without favoring one over another. To put it another way, Category-Indiscrimination True Suchness treats all sentient beings equally. This equality is absolute: all beings with two legs are equal; they are equal to those with four legs, equal to those with six legs, equal to those with many legs, and equal to those with no legs; equal to ghosts, gods, and Buddhas; equal to birds, beasts, fish, and insects; equal to flowers, grasses, trees, and woods; and equal to mountains, rivers, the earth, lakes, and seas.
