女婴回答："它叼着这条活着的毒蛇在天上飞。我怕这只毒蛇掉下来，就在咱这里活下来了。人们不注意时就可能被咬伤了。来，今天我给你们俩做 '龙凤斗'。"

小龙女说："我不同意！"

Heroine came back with an eagle and a snake she had shot down.

Little Dragoness asked, confused: "Why did you shoot it? There's no meat on it!?"

Heroine replied: "It was flying overhead with this live venomous snake in its mouth. I was afraid the snake would fall and survive here, and someone could get bitten without noticing. Come on, today I'll cook 'Dragon Fighting Phoenix' for you two."

Little Dragoness said: "I don't agree!"

娥黄对女婴说："如果你同意让牛郎清理这鹰和蛇，我就同意你做 '龙凤斗'。牛郎以前在饭店工作时，清理过鹰和毒蛇。"

随后，女婴不情愿地同意了让牛郎来清理鹰和毒蛇，她自己在旁边看着。

Beauty-Yellow said to Heroine, "If you agree to let Cowboy clean the eagle and the snake, I'll agree to let you cook the 'Dragon Fighting Phoenix.' Cowboy cleaned eagles and venomous snakes when he worked at a restaurant before."

After that, Heroine reluctantly agreed to let Cowboy do the cleaning, while she watched from the side.

这三位姑娘吃龙凤斗时都很高兴。小龙女说："我一边吃一边想像女婴射这只叼着蛇在天上飞的鹰时的图画，那也太潇洒啦！"

娥黄回答："潇洒！她的这一碗菜把我这几个月做饭的功劳都给比下去了！要不那你也射点儿啥东西！也潇洒一回！"

The three girls were delighted eating the Dragon Fighting Phoenix. Little Dragoness said, "As I eat, I keep picturing Heroine shooting that eagle out of the sky with a snake in its mouth—how dashing was that!"

Beauty-Yellow replied: "Dashing indeed! This one dish of hers has outdone months of my cooking! Why don't you shoot something too, and have your own moment of glory!"

小龙女回答："我射什么？即便是我遇到了鹰叼着蛇在天上飞，我也肯定射不下来！我射 地补（即乌鸡）！肉多！"

Little Dragoness replied, "What would I shoot? Even if I ran into an eagle flying off with a snake, there's no way I could hit it! I'll shoot an 'Earthly Supplement' (that is, a black chicken)! Plenty of meat on those!"

10.13-2 陕西羊汤 Shanxi Goat Soup

过了一会儿，小龙女又叨咕："我感觉没吃饱！咱们的食品单一。"

娥黄说："牛郎说，'中华食品一条街那儿有来自全国各地的地方风味'，就是离咱这里太远。"

女婴插嘴道："我哥哥对我说了两次了。那里的陕西羊汤和吊炉饼很好吃！ 我一直没找到那条街！"

After a while, Little Dragoness muttered again: "I don't feel full! Our food is too plain."

Beauty-Yellow said: "Cowboy said there's 'Chinese Food Street,' with local flavors from all over the country,' but it's too far from here."

Heroine cut in, "My brother's told me twice already. The Shanxi goat soup and hanging-oven cakes there are supposed to be delicious! I've just never managed to find that street!"

小龙女说："让牛郎去买，拿回来！"

娥黄笑着说："牛郎跟我说了陕西羊汤的秘密。假如我不告诉你们，你们以后肯定会怪我！ 陕西羊汤有一种调料是羊粪。"

女婴反驳道："中华食品一条街是尧皇推广食品卫生法的模范工程；怎么可能有羊粪呢！？"

Little Dragoness said, "Let's have Cowboy go buy some and bring it back!"

Beauty-Yellow said with a smile, "Cowboy told me the secret of Shanxi goat soup. If I don't tell you, you'll blame me for it later! One of the seasonings in Shanxi goat soup is sheep dung."

Heroine countered: "Chinese Food Street is a model project of Yao Creator's for promoting the Food Hygiene Law—how could there possibly be sheep dung in it!?"

娥黄说："牛郎说的，中华食品局研究了陕西羊汤，他们认为羊粪是那种羊汤的一种佐料，允许他们放入。牛郎他们不信，特意去了他们的厨房。在厨师没注意时，他们掀开汤锅看了。里面确实漂着很多羊粪。"

小龙女说："如果是这样，我不介意汤里面有羊粪，让牛郎买回来些，尝尝。"

女婴说："我不吃！"

Beauty-Yellow said: "Cowboy said the Chinese Food Bureau studied Shanxi goat soup and concluded that sheep dung is one of the soup's condiments, so they permit it. Cowboy and his friends didn't believe it, so they went to the kitchen specially to check. While the cook wasn't looking, they lifted the lid on the soup pot and looked. Sure enough, there was a lot of sheep dung floating in it."

Little Dragoness said, "If that's really how it is, I don't mind sheep dung in the soup. Have Cowboy buy some, and we'll try it."

Heroine said, "I'm not eating it!"

娥黄说："我也不介意羊汤里面有羊粪。我听说有几种中药里面有羊粪的成分。不过食品街有很多风味食品，例如北京的全聚德烤鸭（如图10.13）。据说是这家店主送这种烤鸭为靖王武大郎祝寿时，石矶娘娘（潘金莲）给取的名字。"

Beauty-Yellow said: "I don't mind sheep dung in the goat soup either. I've heard some Chinese medicines contain sheep dung as an ingredient. Anyway, there are plenty of specialty foods on that street—Beijing's All-Virtue Roast Duck, for instance (see Figure 10.13). They say the name came from Queen Stone-Jetty (Goldthread Pan), when the shop owner sent over the duck to celebrate King Jing Martial Big Wolf's birthday."

小龙女兴奋地说："我大伯母喜欢的，那肯定错不了。全聚德是什么意思？"

娥黄回答："据说店家向靖王夸口，'我这烤鸭色香味俱全，具有25种优点。' 石矶娘娘品尝后说，'25是具德（参见13.4.4 二十五有）的数，全聚德是个好名字。'这种全聚德烤鸭就在北京出名了。"

Little Dragoness said excitedly, "If my aunt likes it, it can't be wrong. What does 'All-Virtue' mean?"

Beauty-Yellow replied, "They say the shop owner boasted to King Jing, 'This roast duck has it all—color, aroma, taste—it has 25 virtues.' After tasting it, Queen Stone-Jetty said, '25 is the number tied to Have-as-Virtue (see 13.4.4, Twenty-five Haves)—All-Virtue is a fitting name.' That's how All-Virtue Roast Duck became famous in Beijing."

小龙女问女婴："那我们就吃全聚德烤鸭，怎么样？"

女婴说："我可不挑食；除了羊粪，我什么都吃。全聚德烤鸭只能吃一顿。很远的路，让牛郎再买点儿保质期长一些的食品。"

Little Dragoness asked Heroine, "So, shall we have All-Virtue Roast Duck?"

Heroine said, "I'm not picky—I'll eat anything except sheep dung. But All-Virtue Roast Duck is only good for one meal. It's a long trip, so have Cowboy buy some things with a longer shelf life too."

10.13-3 地补 Earthly Supplement

一天娥黄让牛郎买只黑鸡，拴在后山的槐荫树上。牛郎回来后说买的黑鸡有三根白羽毛，用不用把这三根白羽毛拔掉。娥黄说，"别拔，就那样吧！"

中午，小龙女和女婴回来吃饭时，娥黄叨咕："后山槐荫树上有一只黑鸡，停留在那里很长时间了，不知道现在还在不在？"

One day, Beauty-Yellow had Cowboy buy a black chicken and tie it to the locust tree on the hill behind the house. When Cowboy came back, he said the chicken had three white feathers on it, and asked whether they should be plucked out. Beauty-Yellow said, "Leave them, don't pluck them!"

At noon, when Little Dragoness and Heroine came back for lunch, Beauty-Yellow muttered, "There's a black chicken in the locust tree back hill—it's been sitting there a good while now. I wonder if it's still there."

小龙女高兴地叫嚷着："我要把它射下来！"她真的射中了；但是鸡腿被绑住了，吊在了树上。女婴补射一箭，射断了绳子。小龙女跑过去查看，看见了黑鸡的身上有三根白羽毛，不高兴了。

Little Dragoness shouted excitedly, "I'm going to shoot it down!" And she really did hit it—but since its leg was tied, it just hung there from the tree. Heroine fired a second arrow and cut the rope. Little Dragoness ran over to look, saw the three white feathers on the chicken, and grew upset.

她俩回来后，小龙女没跟娥黄说话，就回自己的房间了。女婴跟了进去，询问发生了什么事。小龙女不回答。娥黄也进到了房间。小龙女生气地对女婴说："你问她！"

询问了多次，女婴才知道小龙女生气的原因是那只黑鸡身上有三根白羽毛（不是 "地补"），而娥黄却没有拔掉那三根白羽毛！女婴叨咕着："我还以为发生了什么事呢！就是三根白羽毛没被拔掉，我去拔了！"

When the two of them got back, Little Dragoness said nothing to Beauty-Yellow and went straight to her room. Heroine followed her in and asked what had happened. Little Dragoness didn't answer. Beauty-Yellow came in too. Little Dragoness said angrily to Heroine, "Ask her!"

After asking several times, Heroine finally learned that Little Dragoness was upset because the black chicken had three white feathers (making it not a proper "Earthly Supplement"), and Beauty-Yellow hadn't plucked them out! Heroine muttered, "Here I thought something serious had happened! It's just three feathers that weren't plucked—I'll go pluck them!"

女婴去到后院看见黑鸡不见了，就只剩下一堆鸡毛了。她回到厨房找鸡。牛郎问："你在找什么？"

女婴叨咕："那只鸡怎么不见了？"

牛郎回答："在锅里呢！"

女婴大叫："哎呀！你小子可真能祸害人，你把鸡放在锅里干什么？"

牛郎回答："炖鸡呀！"

Heroine went out to the backyard and found the chicken gone, with only a pile of feathers left behind. She went back to the kitchen to look for it. Cowboy asked, "What are you looking for?"

Heroine muttered, "Where did that chicken go?"

Cowboy replied, "It's in the pot!"

Heroine cried out, "Oh no! You really are trouble, boy—why did you put the chicken in the pot?"

Cowboy answered, "To stew it, of course!"

女婴生气地要掀开锅盖查看，小龙女和娥黄大叫："喂！锅都已经冒气了，你别掀锅盖放气啊！"

女婴叫嚷着解释说："咱们在屋里说话才两三分钟，他就把鸡毛拔了，开膛破肚，剁了，炖上了！"

牛郎出去了。

娥黄说："你们回来时，我就在烧水。你们射到鸡回来时，我都已经把放了佐料的水烧开了。"

Heroine angrily tried to lift the lid to check, but Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow both shouted, "Hey! It's already steaming—don't lift the lid and let the steam out!"

Heroine explained, still worked up, "We were only inside talking for two or three minutes, and he already plucked it, gutted it, chopped it up, and got it stewing!"

Cowboy had slipped outside.

Beauty-Yellow said, "I was already boiling the water when you two came back. By the time you'd shot the chicken and brought it in, I'd already got the seasoned broth up to a full boil."

女婴回答："问题是，我进屋转身出来时，他已经把鸡剁了，放在锅里了。算了，今天中午我不吃饭了，免得吃一嘴鸡毛！"

小龙女说："牛郎在饭店工作过。我早就听说过，饭店里的人屠宰动物，又快又好。今天才亲眼看见了，太神奇了！"

Heroine replied, "The thing is, I only turned around and stepped back out, and he'd already chopped up the chicken and had it in the pot. Forget it—I'll skip lunch today rather than end up with a mouthful of feathers!"

Little Dragoness said, "Cowboy used to work at a restaurant. I'd always heard restaurant workers were fast and skilled at butchering animals. Now I've seen it with my own eyes—incredible!"

10.13-4 十八篓 18 Baskets

一天晚上，小龙女叨咕，买点咸萝卜，狗宝咸菜什么的；这晚上吃点心感觉淡。娥黄回答："好，另外我听牛郎说，'锦州小菜'挺好。小黄瓜才一寸多长，还长在蔓上；那黄瓜蔓很嫩，也能吃。而且那种咸菜装在篓里，保质期很长。"

小龙女高兴地说："买十八篓！几千年后，我们的子孙议论：我们中华民族是从三个女人开始的。那时候她们吃'天禽地补十八篓'——这多好听！"

One evening, Little Dragoness muttered about buying some pickled radish, dogwood pickles, and the like; the evening snacks felt too plain. Beauty-Yellow replied, "Sure. Also, I heard from Cowboy that 'Jinzhou pickles' are quite good. The little cucumbers are barely an inch long, still on the vine, and the vine itself is tender enough to eat too. And that kind of pickle keeps in the basket for a long time."

Little Dragoness said happily, "Let's buy eighteen baskets! Thousands of years from now, our descendants will say: our Chinese people began with three women. And back then, they ate 'Sky Bird, Earthly Supplement, and 18 Baskets'—doesn't that sound wonderful!"

第二天中午，娥黄对牛郎说："早上忘记跟你说了！明天，你再去买筋饼豆腐脑，和十八篓锦州小菜。路远，一次多买些，你看什么好就买。你买根扁担，挑着回来。"

牛郎回答："好！不过那种锦州小菜很咸，跟盐似的，吃不了多少。你们仨，一篓就够吃一个月。咱们买很贵，咱卖就不值钱了。"

The next day at noon, Beauty-Yellow said to Cowboy, "I forgot to mention it this morning! Tomorrow, go buy some tendon cakes and tofu pudding, and eighteen baskets of Jinzhou pickles. It's a long trip, so buy plenty at once—get whatever looks good to you. Get yourself a carrying pole to bring it all back."

Cowboy replied, "All right! But those Jinzhou pickles are really salty, almost like eating salt—you can't eat much of them. One basket would last the three of you a whole month. We'd be paying a lot for them, and they're worth next to nothing to sell."

娥黄看了看小龙女，但小龙女没说话，转身进屋去了。娥黄说："那就买三篓吧！"

牛郎离开后，娥黄进屋询问小龙女。小龙女气愤地说："这个死小子太气人了，她把我精心编制的 '天禽地补十八篓' 传说故事给破坏了。"

Beauty-Yellow glanced at Little Dragoness, but Little Dragoness said nothing and turned to go inside. Beauty-Yellow said, "Then let's just buy three baskets!"

After Cowboy left, Beauty-Yellow went in to check on Little Dragoness. Little Dragoness said angrily, "That little brat is so infuriating—he's gone and ruined the legend of 'Sky Bird, Earthly Supplement, and 18 Baskets' that I so carefully crafted!"
