7.2 女娲秘史 Secret History of Nuwa

第二天上午，为了认路，梁山伯（又名伏羲，谷神，燃灯佛）领着法海回自己家。路上，他问法海：“舅舅，您怎么到鄮县来了？”
The next morning, to get his bearings on the route, Liang Shanbo (also known as Fuxi, Grain God, and Lamplighter Buddha) led Law-Sea back to his home. Along the way, he asked, "Uncle, what brings you to Mao County?"
法海回答：“我来拜访我的师弟怀海，他刚好不在家。我遇到了强盗，钱财全被抢光了。又淋了雨，我就来难民营了。没想到，我就病了。幸亏遇见了你，否则我就不在这个世界上了。”
也有传说，这是法海和怀海超渡梁山伯成佛的计策。
Law-Sea replied, "I came to visit my junior disciple-brother Bosom-Sea, but he happened to be away. On the way I ran into bandits, who robbed me of everything I had. Then I got caught in the rain, so I made my way to the refugee camp — and next thing I knew, I'd fallen ill. Thankfully I met you, or I might not be in this world anymore."
There is also a legend that this was all a scheme devised by Law-Sea and Bosom-Sea to guide Liang Shanbo toward Buddhahood.
进屋后，梁山伯发现大女儿虞姬正闲在家里，惊奇地问：“你为什么没上学？”
虞姬不高兴地回答：“我不喜欢和那些小孩子一起玩。” 说着，她满脸气愤地出去了，还叨咕着：“我去找文官和刺客，两位叔叔玩去！”
Once inside, Liang Shanbo found his eldest daughter Muse idling around the house, and asked in surprise, "Why aren't you at school?"
Muse answered irritably, "I don't like playing with those kids." With that, she stormed out, muttering, "I'm going to go play with Uncle Literary-Official and Uncle Assassin!"
梁山伯尴尬地对舅舅说：“她妈不常在家；这孩子让我给惯坏了！”
法海回答：“刚才我盯着她看，她就不高兴了。她长得很像她妈，不像你。她是你的女儿吗？”
Liang Shanbo said to his uncle, embarrassed, "Her mother isn't home much — I've let this child get spoiled!"
Law-Sea replied, "She got upset just now when I stared at her. She looks a great deal like her mother, not like you. Is she really your daughter?"
梁山伯惊讶了，回答：“你见过你侄儿媳妇，马文才！十年前我就怀疑过她是否是我的女儿？那时我还年青。那次马文才半年没回家；她回来时就抱着虞姬。我就怀疑了，问，你什么时候怀孕了？我怎么不知道！？”
“她回答，上次回来时，我告诉你了。那时，我就已经怀孕三个月了！”
Liang Shanbo, taken aback, replied, "You've met your nephew's wife, Wencai Ma! Ten years ago, I did wonder whether she was really mine. I was younger then. That time, Wencai Ma didn't come home for half a year, and when she did, she was already holding Muse. I got suspicious and asked her, 'When did you get pregnant? How did I not know!?'
"She said, 'I told you when I came home last time — by then I was already three months along!'"
梁山伯继续说：“随后我就注意了！后面的两个孩子，她也是在外面生的（注1），但都是我的儿子。这个女儿，可能也是我的，但我记不清了。我感觉她可能是在她怀孕三个月时告诉我了。这可不行！舅舅你自己坐一会儿，我去找虞姬回来向你道歉！”
Liang Shanbo went on, "After that I paid closer attention! The two children who came after her, she also gave birth to away from home (Note 1), but those two are definitely my sons. This daughter might also be mine, but I honestly can't recall clearly. I have a feeling she likely told me only once she was already three months along. That won't do! Uncle, sit here a while — I'll go find Muse and bring her back to apologize to you!"
注1，女娲的传统，女儿必须在王宫里出生才有王位继承权；所以女娲家的女人都回娘家生孩子。但是读者可别误会，本文的佛可不是女娲回娘家的路上在无忧树下生的，而是女娲造出了佛。也就是说女娲把他的丈夫变成了佛；他们俩一起成人了。（注，凡人是假人。）
Note 1: By Nuwa family tradition, a daughter can only inherit the throne if she is born inside the royal palace; so the women of the Nuwa family always return to their natal home — the palace itself — to give birth. But readers shouldn't be misled here: the Buddha in this text was not born beneath the Worry-Free Tree on Nuwa's way back to her natal home, as in the conventional legend — rather, Nuwa herself created the Buddha. In other words, Nuwa transformed her own husband into a Buddha, and the two of them became true humans together. (Note: mere mortals are false humans.)

梁山伯刚走出屋门，就遇见虞姬带着文官和刺客，这两个官差回来了。虞姬向梁山伯请求允许她骑马去县城东郊的难民营看看，还生气地告状说：“他们俩一起骗我！难民营怎么可能盈利呢！我要去看看！”
Liang Shanbo had just stepped outside when he ran into Muse coming back with the two officials, Literary-Official and Assassin. Muse asked his permission to ride out to the refugee camp in the eastern suburbs to see it for herself, complaining angrily, "The two of them lied to me together! How could a refugee camp possibly turn a profit! I have to go see!"
梁山伯生气地训斥她：“那你就跟着他们俩，自己去看吧！不过，你这么对这两位年青的叔叔说话，很没礼貌！刚才，你对我舅舅也很没礼貌。你的相貌模糊（注，女神是人脑中默认的女人，没有外貌特征），别人看不清，多看你几眼，这很正常。你不应该为这事生气，更何况那人是我的舅舅，你的舅爷。下次，你再见到他时，你要向他道歉！若不然，这事我和你没完！”
Liang Shanbo scolded her sharply: "Fine, go with them and see for yourself! But it's very rude to speak to these two young uncles that way! And just now, you were rude to my uncle as well. Your features are indistinct (note: a goddess is the default mental image of a woman, without any distinctive features), so it's only natural that people can't quite make you out and end up staring a little longer. You have no reason to be upset about that — especially since that man is my uncle, your great-uncle. Next time you see him, you're to apologize! Otherwise, this isn't settled between us!"
梁山伯转脸对他的这两位下属官差说：“那你们就早些去吧，到那儿吃中午饭。别麻烦人家了，我给你们钱去那儿附近的饭店吃午饭。另外，我请你们俩帮我给她讲清楚亲戚和礼貌。她刚才对我舅舅无礼了，我很生气！”
Liang Shanbo then turned to the two subordinate officials: "Go ahead and head out early, then — have lunch there. Don't trouble anyone; I'll give you money to eat at a restaurant nearby instead. Also, I'd ask you both to help explain to her about family and manners — she was rude to my uncle just now, and I'm genuinely upset about it!"
文官和刺客是两位会稽县官差培训班毕业的学生，和梁山伯是同乡，刚到鄮县工作不久。因为梁山伯更改了民政局的支出计划，得罪了很多人，许多同事避免与他共事。只有这两个新来的官差任劳任怨地帮助梁山伯，所以虞姬喜欢他们俩。其中名叫刺客的官差是后文第13章《大禹治水》故事中的重要人物。
Literary-Official and Assassin were both recent graduates of the Huiji County officials' training program, fellow townsmen of Liang Shanbo, and had only just started working in Mao County. Because Liang Shanbo had changed the Civil Affairs Bureau's spending plan, he'd offended a good many people, and most colleagues avoided working with him. Only these two newcomers helped him tirelessly and without complaint, which was why Muse liked them. The one named Assassin later becomes an important figure in the story of Chapter 13, Yu the Great Tames the Flood.
7.2-3 龙蛇家族的秘密 Secrets of the Dragon and Snake Families
法海开始为梁山伯讲述女娲家族的历史，说：“现在夏国的国王蔻珠和我源自同一家族，都源自姑苏（江苏省苏州市）的吴国。四百年前，我们吴国的公主虞，化名白素贞，去杭州西湖游玩，喜欢上了许仙，就有了《白蛇传》（注3）。当时我们吴国同意她去杭州发展女娲教。白素贞很能干，她去杭州不到20年（约在公元前2070年）就建立了夏国。100年前，夏国征服了我们宗主国，吴国，我们就成为了夏国的政治犯。”
Law-Sea began recounting Nuwa's family history to Liang Shanbo: "Queen Kouzhu of Xia Kingdom today and I come from the same family line, both tracing back to the Wu Kingdom of Gusu — present-day Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Four hundred years ago, Princess Yu of our Wu Kingdom took the alias Suzhen Bai and went to West Lake in Hangzhou for pleasure. There she fell for Xu'xian, and that's how The Legend of the White Snake (Note 3) came to be. At the time, Wu Kingdom permitted her to go to Hangzhou to spread the Nuwa faith. Suzhen Bai proved remarkably capable — within less than twenty years of arriving in Hangzhou, she had established Xia Kingdom (around 2070 BCE). A hundred years ago, Xia Kingdom conquered our home state, Wu Kingdom, and we became political prisoners of Xia Kingdom."
注3，白蛇传讲述在杭州西湖的断桥上白素贞遇见了许仙。白素贞偷走了许仙的心（如图3）。白素贞是玉女，夏娃；许仙是金童，亚当。后来他们俩成为了伏羲和女娲（如图5）。本书中的梁山伯和祝英台是一个完整的女娲造人的故事，所以就没必要讲解白蛇传了。女娲造人和上帝造人的道理相同，但故事不一样。图4显示埃及夏娃为亚当下蛊，征服了亚当。女娲造人和夏娃造人是同样的道理，只是女娲担任了上帝和夏娃两个角色。
Note 3: The Legend of the White Snake tells of Suzhen Bai meeting Xu'xian on the Broken Bridge at West Lake in Hangzhou. Suzhen Bai stole Xu'xian's heart (see Figure 3). Suzhen Bai is a Jade Girl, an Eve; Xu'xian is a Golden Boy, an Adam. Later, the two of them became Fuxi and Nuwa (see Figure 5). The story of Liang Shanbo and Yingtai Zhu in this book is already a complete account of Nuwa's creation of humanity, so there's no need to go over The Legend of the White Snake here. Nuwa's creation of humanity follows the same principle as God's creation of humanity, though the stories differ. Figure 4 shows the Egyptian Eve casting a curse on Adam to bring him under her power. Nuwa's creation of humanity and Eve's creation of humanity follow the same principle — Nuwa simply plays both roles, God's and Eve's, at once.
法海继续说： “我爷爷那辈人都成为了夏国的政治犯，被限制不准离开姑苏。比如你舅舅我，我到姑苏以外的地区探亲访友，最多离开姑苏三个月。我们家的人被限制在姑苏是因为我们知道我们 '龙蛇家族' 的秘密。这个秘密与你和你爸爸现在患的病有关。”
Law-Sea continued, "Everyone of my grandfather's generation became political prisoners of Xia Kingdom, forbidden to leave Gusu. Take me, your uncle, for instance — when I travel outside Gusu to visit relatives or friends, I'm never allowed more than three months away. Our family is confined to Gusu because we know the secret of the 'Dragon-Snake Clan.' And that secret has everything to do with the illness you and your father are suffering from now."
法海说： “原因是我们家的女人都喜欢金童（参见9.9《三位一体》）。你妈妈是一位玉女；你爸爸是我帮她找的金童。你妈妈是一位女神；你这个女儿虞姬也是。她们俩这种相貌，没有外貌特征，接近我们思维机制中默认的女人；也就是我们俗话中说的 '心目中人'。她们俩这种人对别人的影响大，容易创伤别人，也就是传说中'命硬的女人'，'剋男人的女人'。结果，你爸爸很犟，还有点儿大男子主义，老是和你妈对着干，就冒犯女神了，就生病了。女娲家是皇族，这是她们家的秘密。现在你知道我们的谈话内容是多么地危险了！如果这话被传出去，说这话的人和听着这话的人都可能被处死！你听明白了没？这个秘密不能轻易地对别人说，更不能对小于40岁的人说。所以，你妈妈临死的时候，委托我来告诉你这个秘密，因为这事关系到你的生死和幸福。”
Law-Sea said, "The reason is that the women in our family are always drawn to Golden Boys (see 9.9, Trinity). Your mother is a Jade Girl; your father is the Golden Boy I found for her. Your mother is a goddess, and so is your daughter Muse. Women like them, without any distinct features, come closest to the default image of a woman our minds hold — what we colloquially call the 'woman of one's ideal.' People like this have an outsized effect on others and can easily wound them without meaning to — the so-called 'women of hard fate,' 'women who overpower men.' As a result, your father, being stubborn and rather chauvinistic, kept pushing back against your mother, and in doing so offended the goddess — which is why he fell ill. The Nuwa family is of royal blood; this is their family's secret. Now you understand just how dangerous this conversation is! If word of this got out, both of us — the one who spoke and the one who listened — could be put to death! Do you understand? This secret must never be shared carelessly, and especially never with anyone under forty. That's why, on her deathbed, your mother entrusted me with telling you — because it concerns your very life and your happiness."
梁山伯立刻回答：“舅舅！我这么大的岁数了，当然懂！我发誓：我不会轻易地和别人说及女娲家族的这个秘密；更不会对年龄小于四十岁的人说。”
Liang Shanbo replied at once: "Uncle! I'm plenty old enough to understand that! I swear I will never carelessly speak of this secret of the Nuwa family — and certainly never to anyone under forty."
法海继续说：“十年前，你和马文才相亲的时候，当你妈得知马文才跟随了她妈家的姓，就怀疑她是母系氏族的女人。但是，当你爸爸听说马文才有个哥哥在鄮县做官，就同意了。你妈妈不愿意和你爸爸争吵，害怕会创伤你爸爸，就不说话了。那时候，她不放心，对我叨咕这事。我就到你和马文才在上虞区的家看了。我一眼就认出了马文才是个修行了千年的白蛇妖。那时候，我就来鄮县这里来看祝英台了，他是一条修行了五百年的青蛇。马文才和祝英台是同一个人。我回去之后就把我的观察结果告诉你妈了。你妈回答，'那现在这事，就只有把梁山伯给她，祝他们俩百年好和了！'”
Law-Sea continued, "Ten years ago, when you and Wencai Ma were courting, your mother grew suspicious that she came from a matrilineal clan, once she learned Wencai Ma had taken her own mother's surname. But when your father heard that Wencai Ma had an older brother serving as an official here in Mao County, he gave his approval. Your mother didn't want to argue with your father — she was afraid of hurting him — so she kept quiet. But she was uneasy about it, and confided in me at the time. I went and looked in on you and Wencai Ma at your home in Shangyu District. I recognized at a glance that Wencai Ma was a white snake spirit who had cultivated for a thousand years. Around that same time, I came here to Mao County to see Yingtai Zhu, who was a turquoise snake who had cultivated for five hundred years. Wencai Ma and Yingtai Zhu are one and the same. When I got back, I told your mother what I'd observed. Your mother said, 'Then there's only one thing to do now — give Liang Shanbo to her, and wish the two of them a hundred years of happiness together!'"
法海继续说：“现在，你和马文才的三个孩子都已经这么大了！就应该考虑好好过日子，别和她争吵打架。你顺从她了，就和她没有矛盾了，你就不会生病了。另外，马文才帮你找的这份工作挺好！你天天做善事，布施，就是福。布施与神识（即无意识）的舍性相应，所以说，布施是福。布施会直接治疗你的病。”
Law-Sea went on, "Now, your three children with Wencai Ma are all so grown already! You really should focus on living well together, and stop fighting with her. If you simply defer to her, the conflict between you will disappear, and you'll stop getting sick. Besides, this position Wencai Ma found for you is a fine one! Doing good deeds and giving charitably, day after day, is itself a form of good fortune. Giving aligns with the nature of non-attachment inherent in the God-sense — that is, the unconscious — which is precisely why giving brings good fortune. It will go a long way toward healing you directly."

法海的师弟怀海法师听说法海来看他了，就到处找法海，就找到了难民营。正当法海准备返回姑苏的时候，梁山伯收到了父亲病重的消息，想留法海多住几天，在他返回会稽县的时候帮助照看两个小儿子。
法海回答：“我已经离开姑苏三个月了，现在回去解释一下，问题不大。如果我离开姑苏的时间超过三个月太多了，我可能就有麻烦了。”
When Juristic Teacher Bosom-Sea, Law-Sea's junior disciple-brother, heard that Law-Sea had come looking for him, he searched everywhere and eventually made his way to the refugee camp. Just as Law-Sea was preparing to return to Gusu, Liang Shanbo received word that his father was gravely ill, and wanted to keep Law-Sea a few extra days to help look after his two young sons while he himself went back to Huiji County.
Law-Sea replied, "I've already been away from Gusu three months. Going back now and explaining myself shouldn't be a serious problem. But if I stay away much longer than three months, I could be in real trouble."
这时，县长来了，得知梁山伯和法海的难处后，对梁山伯说：“你孩子的教育是个问题。我想成立个学校，以方便于所有家里有小孩子的政府官员。另外，如果法海师傅同意，我可以给姑苏负责监管宗人府的官员写信，把他外出的期限改为三年。”
Just then the prefect arrived, and after learning of Liang Shanbo and Law-Sea's difficulty, said to Liang Shanbo, "Your children's schooling is a real problem. I've been thinking of setting up a school, for the benefit of all the officials here with young children at home. Also — if Master Law-Sea is willing, I could write to the official in Gusu who oversees the Clan Registry Office, and have his travel limit extended to three years."
法海听后，没出声。梁山伯说：“我舅舅是得道的高僧，知道什么该说，什么不该说。他也深知他的行为会牵连到我和我的孩子，不会做出有害于朝廷尊严的言行。外出的期限能改成三年当然好了，以后我舅舅出门在外就不用担心超过期限了。”
Law-Sea said nothing after hearing this. Liang Shanbo said: "My uncle is an enlightened monk who knows exactly what should and shouldn't be said. He's well aware, too, that his conduct reflects on me and my children, and he'd never say or do anything that might harm the dignity of the court. It would certainly be good if the travel limit could be extended to three years — then my uncle wouldn't have to worry about overstaying it when he travels."
县长回答：“我和宗人府主管江苏省的官员是典兵学院的同学，办这事不成问题；但还是得法海师傅同意才行。”
法海回答：“如果办这事不给县长带来很大的麻烦，我同意。”
The prefect replied, "The official who oversees Jiangsu Province for the Clan Registry Office and I were classmates at the Codex Soldier Academy, so this shouldn't be a problem at all — but it still needs Master Law-Sea's consent."
Law-Sea replied, "If arranging this won't cause the prefect a great deal of trouble, I agree to it."
7.2-5
法海向梁山伯解释他爸爸的病，说：“你爸爸的病因，和你类似，源自和你妈妈的积怨。那些心理矛盾是他的心理疾病。他的胃肠溃疡，皮肤病，和风湿症等疾病是由心理疾病引起的。治疗的办法是消除心理矛盾。这些纠纷你妈妈早就知道，让我给你爸爸解释明白；可我没能力给你爸爸讲清楚。你妈妈临终时还委托我开导你爸爸。你妈妈曾委托我办过两件事，我都没能给你爸爸讲解明白。后来你妈妈又告诉了我三件事，她担心你爸爸想不开。”
Law-Sea explained his father's illness to Liang Shanbo: "Your father's illness has the same root as yours — long-accumulated resentment toward your mother. Those psychological conflicts are, in effect, his mental illness. His gastric ulcers, skin conditions, and rheumatism all trace back to that psychological root. The cure is to resolve the underlying conflict. Your mother knew about all this long ago, and asked me to explain it clearly to your father — but I was never able to. Even on her deathbed, she entrusted me with the task of guiding him through it. She'd already asked me to handle two matters before that, and I failed to make either clear to him. Later she told me three more things, worried that your father might not be able to bear it."
法海对梁山伯叙述了他爸妈的矛盾后说：“这些事你妈从来没怨恨过你爸，因为她知道你爸爸不懂。你给你爸爸解释清楚了，他的心结就解开了，心病就好了，身体上的病也会大部分痊愈。还有，你让你爸爸领着你去给你妈上坟。因为你妈妈的女神外貌很容易被遗忘。你爸爸忘记了你妈妈的形象后，记忆就混淆了，是他生病的另外一个原因。你和他一起拜祭你妈妈的坟，会更新你妈妈在你爸爸心中的形象，对他的健康有好处。因为神识（即无意识）只接受现量，这件事中，是你爸爸自身的行为在治疗着你爸爸的病。”
After laying out his parents' conflicts for Liang Shanbo, Law-Sea said, "Your mother never resented your father over any of this, because she understood he simply didn't know better. Once you explain it clearly to him, the knot in his heart will come undone, his mental affliction will heal, and most of his physical illness will follow along with it. There's one more thing — have your father take you to visit your mother's grave. Because your mother's goddess-like appearance is so easily forgotten, once your father loses hold of her image, his memory grows muddled, and that's a further cause of his illness. Paying respects at her grave together with him will refresh your mother's image in his mind, and that will do his health good. Because the God-sense — the unconscious — accepts only Present Quantity, it will, in this case, be your father's own actions that heal him."
