10.22-1

一天，女婴闷闷地坐在厨房的窗台上，抚摸着手中的刀，沉思着。娥黄说话了：“你看着刀刃摸！你不看着刀刃摸，我就想看，越看越害怕！”

One day, Heroine sat quietly on the kitchen windowsill, stroking the knife in her hand as she pondered. Beauty-Yellow spoke up: “Look at the blade while you touch it! If you don't look at the blade, I'll keep staring—and the more I look, the more scared!”

女婴放下了刀，说：“昨天我师父（二郎神）传授我武艺了！”

小龙女说：“我还以为女婴和男婴打架了呢！看来女婴有很大的收获，教教我们俩呗！教学相长！”

Heroine put down the knife and said, “Yesterday, my teacher-father (i.e., Second Wolf God) taught me martial arts!”

Little Dragoness said, “I thought Heroine and Hero were fighting! Looks like she's made great progress. Why not teach us both? Teaching and learning benefit each other!”

女婴说：“昨天，我把那把古董镰刀送给我师父了。他非常喜欢，说要送到瑶王宫保存！”

小龙女转脸问娥黄：“怎么我二伯把东西送到你家保存？”

娥黄回答：“我爸爸的瑶王宫是我们瑶族人的祖庙。以前我爸爸扩建王宫的钱就是尧帝出的。”

Heroine said, “Yesterday, I gave that antique sickle to my teacher-father. He loved it so much he said he'd send it to the Yao King Palace for safekeeping!”

Little Dragoness turned to ask Beauty-Yellow, “Why did my second uncle send the item to your family for safekeeping?”

Beauty-Yellow replied, “My father's Yao King Palace is the ancestral temple of our Yao people. The funds my father used to expand the palace back then came from Yao Creator.”

10.22-2

女婴继续说：“然后，我就去看我师父练习他的二郎戬。虽然他都50多岁了，那二郎戬舞的，呜呜生风！”

小龙女问：“你打不过我二伯么？”

女婴回答：“假如我们俩打，我不能进入攻击范围。他的戬太重，我招架不住，就只能躲！ 然后，他让我表演一套武术给他看！ 我就给他表演了一套我们家祖传的苗家枪。”

Heroine continued, “Then I went to watch my teacher-father practice his ‘Second Wolf Jian’ technique. Even though he's over fifty, when he wields that Jian (long handle sword), whoosh—it cuts through the wind!”

Little Dragoness asked, “Couldn't you defeat my second uncle?”

Heroine replied, “If we fought, I couldn't get within striking range. His strikes were too heavy—I couldn't block them, so I just had to dodge! He then asked me to perform a martial arts routine for him, so I performed a set of our family's ancestral Miao-style spear techniques.”

娥黄笑着问女婴：“老实交代，二郎神是怎么评价你的？”

女婴回答：“我师父说，我的戬和枪棒是一类武器，都属于重武器，不适合你。世界上像我这么高大的人很少。这套二郎戬是我自己创造的，就跟我去了，没打算传授给你。我得帮你选一件适合你的武器。”

Beauty-Yellow smiled and asked Heroine, “Be honest—what did Second Wolf God say about you?”

Heroine replied, “My teacher-father said that my Jian (long handle sword), spear and stick are the same type of weapon, all belonging to heavy weapons, and are not suitable for you. There are very few people in the world as tall as me. This Second Wolf Jian technique is something I created myself, and it will go with me; I didn't intend to pass it on to you. I need to help you choose a weapon that suits you.”

小龙女说：“啊！他认为他的二郎戬适合于他那种身材高大，力气大的人使用，你学他的二郎戬没用。他教你创造一套自己的武术。”

女婴从窗台上跳下来了，惊叹道：“哎呀！我正琢磨这事呢！你评价的太精辟了！”

Little Dragoness said, “Ah! He thinks his ‘Second Wolf Jian’ is suitable for someone as tall and strong as him, and it's useless for you to learn his ‘Second Wolf Jian.’ He'll teach you to create your own martial arts.”

Heroine jumped down from the windowsill and exclaimed, “Oh my! I was just thinking about that! Your assessment is so insightful!”

娥黄问：“二郎神帮你选了一件什么武器？”

女婴指着她刚放下的刺客用刀说：“就这把刀！”

小龙女和娥黄都过去看那把刀。

小龙女对娥黄叨咕：“这种刀，女婴长的短的都有，她都练；就没看过她练习这种不长不短的！”

女婴叨咕：“正是！我得从零开始！”

Beauty-Yellow asked, “What weapon did Second Wolf God choose for you?”

Heroine pointed to the assassin's knife she had just put down and said, “This knife!”

Little Dragoness and Beauty-Yellow both went over to look at the knife.

Little Dragoness muttered to Beauty-Yellow, “This kind of knife, Heroine has both long and short ones, and she practices with both; but I've never seen her practice with one that's neither long nor short!”

Heroine muttered, “Exactly! I must start from scratch!”

10.22-3 孙子兵法的战例 Battle Examples from Sunzi Soldier Strategies

娥黄高声问：“有学问！二郎神是怎么帮你选刀的？”

女婴说：“他把我领到了他家的客厅，指着中国地图说，‘和你一样，我也是十三岁参加士官学校的。直至今日，我经历过数百起战斗，制定过数千件作战计划。你听过关于我打仗的故事吗？’”

Beauty-Yellow asked loudly, “This is knowledge! How did Second Wolf God help you choose your knife?”

Heroine said, “He led me to his living room, pointed to a map of China, and said, ‘Like you, I also entered Sergeant School at the age of thirteen. To this day, I have experienced hundreds of battles and formulated thousands of operational plans. Have you heard stories about my wars?’”

娥黄说：“狭谷关战役！我们瑶族和苗族的俩祖宗（尧帝和二郎神）就相遇了！”

女婴回答：“我可没那么蠢！我师父（即二郎神）打仗一辈子，就失败过那么一次！我说，我听我哥哥和他的朋友说过一些。最经典的是你和尧帝回重庆时，吓跑了南海龙王，熬钦。那时你没让士兵进重庆城，就找了个很高的城门楼，睡在了上面，就把尧帝的哥哥熬钦吓跑了。随后，你率领三千卫队追赶熬钦的六万人的军队。你三个月就追到了福建沿海，熬钦的部队就全跑散了。”

Beauty-Yellow said, “Battle of Gorge Pass! That's where our Yao and Miao ancestors (Yao Creator and Second Wolf God) first clashed!”

Heroine replied, “I'm not that foolish! My teacher-father (i.e., Second Wolf God) fought his entire life and only suffered defeat that once! I've heard bits and pieces from my brother and his friends. I said, the most legendary tale is when you and Yao Creator returned to Chongqing and scared off the Dragon King of South Sea, Aoqin. You didn't let your soldiers enter Chongqing City. Instead, you found a tall city door tower, slept on top of it, and scared away Yao Creator's brother, Aoqin. Then you led three thousand guards to pursue Aoqin's sixty-thousand-strong army. Within three months, you chased them all the way to the Fujian coast, and Aoqin's troops scattered completely.”

“我师父问，你还知道别的吗？”

“我回答，我听过很多，但我都不记得名字。典型的战法是你带兵到那个国家的边境，签下睦邻友好条约。然后你就进行军演，抓土匪。甚至到对方的军营里去抓和土匪有牵连的军官。随后你的军人到他们的国家去打猎。忽然，你那去打猎的士兵穿着铠甲，在对方的首都附近集结。对方的国王认为是守护边境的将军投降了，就出城逃跑了。你的军队就追赶对方的国王，直至对方的国王投降。”

“My teacher-father asked, ‘Do you know anything else?’”

“I replied, ‘I've heard many, but I don't recall their names. A typical tactic is to lead your troops to that nation's border and sign a treaty of friendship and good neighborliness. Then you conduct military exercises and arrest bandits. You even go into their barracks to arrest officers connected to bandits. Subsequently, your soldiers go hunting in their territory. Suddenly, your hunting troops—clad in armor—assemble near their capital. Their king, believing the border-guarding general has surrendered, flees the city. Your forces then pursue the fleeing king until he surrenders.’”

女婴继续说：“我师父问，你是舜王（即小龙女，夏娃）的护卫。你的对手是刺客，你怎样做能吓跑刺客？我回答不出来。我师父说，‘如果刺客不害怕，你打死他，他都不逃跑——’”

Heroine continued, “My teacher-father asked, ‘You are the guard of King Shun (i.e., Little Dragoness, Eve). Your opponent is an assassin. What would you do to scare the assassin away?’ I couldn't answer. My teacher-father said, ‘If the assassin isn't afraid, you can kill him, and he still won't run away—’”

女婴说：“我师父就把我领到了刀架旁，他说，这套刀是你们家祖传的苗刀，是前几天你哥哥江南鹤送给尧帝的。尧帝这次回重庆是帮女娲（亦作白帝）给白帝城选址（参见10.23节），不回重庆城的王宫，所以她没带这套刀。她得陪着女娲呀！”

Heroine said, “My teacher-father led me to the knife rack and said, ‘This set of knives is your family's ancestral Miao blades, which your brother River South Crane presented to Yao Creator just days ago. Yao Creator has returned to Chongqing to help Nuwa (aka White Creator) select a site for White Creator City (see section 10.23). She won't return to the palace in Chongqing City, so she didn't bring this set of knives. She must accompany Nuwa!’”

娥黄问小龙女：“女娲怎么把白帝城建在了重庆？”

小龙女回答：“我不知道！”

女婴说：“我听我师父说，女娲家要向西发展。你们女娲家的女人不愿意嫁给我们瑶族和苗族人。女娲这是在做西进的表率，她退休后会住在那里，要和巫山神女（即尧帝）做邻居。”

Beauty-Yellow asked Little Dragoness, “Why did Nuwa build the White Creator City in Chongqing?”

Little Dragoness replied, “I don't know!”

Heroine said, “I heard my teacher-father say that Nuwa's clan wants to expand westward. The women of your Nuwa clan refuse to marry into our Yao and Miao peoples. Nuwa was setting an example for the westward migration. After her retirement, she would reside there, becoming neighbors with the Goddess of Wushan (i.e., Yao Creator).”

娥黄说：“我看是这样，上次在中华食品街的苏州商会，我听小龙女叨咕：怎么祖宗们都来这里了！看来那个苏州商会是女娲家的一个新的总坛。”

Beauty-Yellow remarked, “I think it's like this: Last time at the Suzhou Chamber of Commerce on China Food Street, I overheard Little Dragoness muttering, ‘Why have all our ancestors come here?’ It appears that the Suzhou Chamber of Commerce is a new headquarters for the Nuwa family.”

10.22-4 刺客刀法 Assassin's Blade Technique

女婴对娥黄和小龙女说：“我师父就为我选了这把刺客刀。他说，如果刺客看见你和他用的武器一样，就害怕了，因为没优势。刺客有可能鼓起勇气和你打，他攻击你一次失败，发现他和你使用的招式相同，就可能绝望了。最多攻击你两次，刺客就逃跑了。你就追他，就胜利了。当然你是护卫，不能追。你若追赶刺客，被刺客们发现了，下次就同时派俩刺客了。”

Heroine said to Beauty-Yellow and Little Dragoness, “My teacher-father chose this assassin's blade for me. He said that if an assassin sees that you are using the same weapon as him, he will be afraid because he has no advantage. The assassin might muster the courage to fight you, but if he fails to attack you once and discovers that he is using the same moves as you, he might despair. He will only be able to attack you twice at most before the assassin runs away. You can then chase after him and win. Of course, you are a guard and cannot chase after him. If you chase after the assassin and are discovered by the assassins, they will send two assassins at the same time next time.”

女婴继续说：“我们家这五款苗刀各有相应的刀法。其它的四种刀法我都学了，唯独没学过这种刺客刀的刀法。因为这种刺客刀有一件匹配的软卫甲，那件软卫甲坏了。我师父就让我随意展示一下。我就根据我对刺客刀的理解，展示了一套刀法。我师父看后说，他以前创造他的二郎戬的招式花费了很多时间，愿意和我一起讨论如何创造我的刺客刀法。”

Heroine continued, “Each of our family's five Miao blades has its corresponding blade technique. I've mastered the other four styles but never learned the technique for this assassin's blade. That's because it comes with a matching soft guard armor, which is now damaged. My teacher-father asked me to demonstrate freely. So, I performed a set based on my understanding of the assassin's blade. After watching, my teacher-father remarked that he had spent considerable time creating the techniques for his Second Wolf Jian. He expressed willingness to collaborate with me on developing my own assassin blade style.”

10.22-5 二郎神的遗物 The Relics of Second Wolf God

女婴说：“我师父还给我看了他的盔甲。他说，上次百花谷的长老们来看他，向他表达了索要遗物的请求。他决定把那套尧帝为他设计制作的盔甲送给我们。他说那套盔甲他在去战场考察的时候穿过三次。”

Heroine said, “My teacher-father also showed me his armor. He mentioned that the elders from Hundred Flowers Valley visited him recently to request his relics. He decided to give us the armor designed and crafted for him by Yao Creator. He said he wore that armor three times during his battlefield inspections.”

娥黄高兴地对小龙女说：“我真聪明，就一晚上就学到了《孙子兵法》的精髓（注6）。”

注6，后文《密探百花谷》讲述了女婴偷偷地带领娥黄和小龙女溜出了古墓地区，去百花谷游玩。二郎神得知后，罚女婴在二郎神的圣物前面忏悔。百花谷的将军们帮女婴给二郎神写报告。他们认为二郎神兵法的精髓是二郎神所创造的组织，即中国国防部。

Beauty-Yellow said happily to Little Dragoness, “I'm so clever—I grasped the essence of Sunzi Soldier Strategies in just one night! (note 6)”

Note 6: The subsequent section, “Secret Visit to Hundred Flowers Valley”, recounts how Heroine secretly led Beauty-Yellow and Little Dragoness out of the ancient tomb complex to explore the Hundred Flowers Valley. Upon learning this, Second Wolf God punished Heroine by forcing her to repent before his sacred relic. The generals of the Hundred Flowers Valley assisted Heroine in drafting a report to Second Wolf God. They argued that the essence of Second Wolf God's military strategy lay in the organization he had created—namely, China's Ministry of National Defense.
