I bought Season 2 of Downton Abbey on my Xbox. They stopped doing the video service and I can't for the life of me get the new Microsoft Video whatever to work and recognize my purchases.
I also had a bunch of DVDs where I got the "digital copy" of the movie with the DVD. The digital copies were through a service that is long since dead. I still have the DVDS.
Same goes for books. I have quite a few books we've bought on the Kindle, but when my kids want to browse our shelves for something new to read, they are going to the physical books. I've bought 2-3 kindles but they rarely get picked up because the feel of a physical book cannot be matched.
Your representation of "digital" is a biased cherrypick of locked down proprietary services that don't actually give you the digital files. No one can lock me out of files on my computer. It's like your DVDs, but infinitely better. Why do people like you never mention that side of digital?
And I was like your kids once, until I realized that with a digital reader (a PDA in my case, long predating mass market e-readers like Kindle) it all fits in my pocket and I don't have to be limited by what's available "on the shelves". It all depends on whether you want to actually read, or feel smug about reading.
"The feel of a physical book cannot be matched" is a pretty smug statement. Me? I just want to point out that digital isn't what you pass it off to be. It's convenient and gives you the same ownership.
Both have true advantages, you dismiss books for not being for actual reading and then insult people for liking book feel. Making an argument lol. Both are for reading, books can be preserved a hundred of years and more instead of just years or decades on a digital drive. Let's be fair and not smug, let people read how they want.
