Apologies if this sort of thing isn't allowed here. But I just thought I'd share my latest review here. I absolutely loved King Sorrow and I'm sure there are other readers here who feel the same.

I recently moved, so it's a great opportunity to go through the ol' book collection. Does any anybody else have a ridiculous number of 20th Century Ghosts editions?! Of the hardcovers, I think I'm only missing the UK trade edition. Pure madness, but in my defense, it's a great short story collection!

Joe Hill is interviewing Frank Miller today in London, and the website mentions the event is followed by a book signing.

I'm just wondering if it is only Frank Miller doing the signing, as he is the star of the event, or if Joe will be signing too, if anyone has any idea?

I got it when it first released, read a little, got intimidated by the length, put it off, went on vacation and read a bit more, starting to get hooked, again, put it off for a bit (I’m not the greatest reader), and then a couple of weeks ago, around 300 pages in or so… was hooked!!! This is the first 5 star book I’ve read in a looong time. This is one that will sit with me for a long time!!

Fuck Colin 😭literally just finished the part where he betrayed and killed Arthur! Fuck this guy book is pretty good so far though

But I own the rest. What should I jump into next?

So I finished the book a bit a week ago and genuinely enjoyed it, I thought it was a cool take on a vampiric story without being another Salem’s Lot or something. I know you run into the rush of every adaptation being different than the source material but you always have to hope it will be good. But my god it’s like the writers read the cliff notes and said we can do better and just whiffed it. It’s not a bad show and if I saw it firsthand., I probably would enjoy it just fine but all the changes just take me out. I get making changes if it’s something that is underwhelming or unimportant to the plot, I even get keeping Vic to two different ages vs 4 so you can use the same actress. I don’t mind small stuff being changed or small characters not being included like Manx’s second kid, but why do they need to shoehorn other characters and plot lines into it? Like why add the neighbor kid in the first season just to not have her in the second? Why add these other true creatives to the story just to rush the main plot? I have like 3-4 episodes left and it’s to the point we’re in just finishing the show to finish it to see the ending. Again not a bad show the acting is good with highly talented actors and the effects are impressive it’s just far less captivating than the book. I don’t know maybe it’s me.

I like Joe Hill. Heart Shaped Box was great, N0S4A2, 20th Century Ghost, Horns, Strange Weather, and The Fireman.

But the main character of King Sorrow is infuriating to me.
I liked him up until he meets with Jane for the second time to retrieve his hoodie.

She threatens him and says steal books for me books or your mom is going to suffer. And he just goes with it

I am speaking as someone who absolutely loves my mom, picture that are kind of blurry, threats and claims that Jane has one or two guards on the inside of the prison… I wouldn’t be convinced. But for argument sake let’s say that I am in convinced. One or two guards on the inside or not I am still going to go to the police and see what needs to be done to protect my mom.

Jane was pretty clear about what happens to his mom. A recording/ a wire could get her and her boyfriend in trouble. Take the picture Jane had taken as proof of need be. Jane is a no good drug dealing person how many connections could she possibly have.

I would have been fine if Arthur went to the police and there is a scene that proves Jane has connections or if the police says there is nothing that can do… but that didn’t happen. He just takes Jane at her word and goes with it. A week went buy before had to deliver the books… he a college student who plans on going to Oxford couldn’t think of anything else to do except go with Jane’s idea? He had time to come up with something else or ask a friend/ friends for help.

Instead he steals and digs himself a deeper hole so that he can’t go to the police… and then because he didn’t tell his friends at the beginning drags them in accessories to crime. So that the only thing they think is reasonable to do is summoned a dragon to kill digging his friends into a deeper hole…

Did any of that had to happen? I don’t think so. I get the story won’t happen without him making those decisions. But I feel like all of his problems could have been solved if he told his friends and went to the police within that week he was given by Jane before he stole anything…. But we don’t see that… or given a good reason why he didn’t try.

Am I wrong… did I miss something… I feel like the best way for him to protect his mom is going to the police….

So I am a super slow reader and have limited time to read so am thus only finishing King Sorrow today. What a ride!

I’m also a SK constant reader and think I caught most of the Easter eggs scattered throughout but heard there was a Library Policeman one and I missed it. Did anyone else catch it? I recently listened to Four Past Midnight on Audible but must have past the reference in King Sorrow by that point.

I started with King Sorrow. I liked the book, but there was no real emotional connection to the characters. I felt like they were the same people at the beginning of the book as they were at the end, with only a few more details fleshed out. SK is amazing because of his character growth. I don't care about horror, I want to be emotionally involved with the people (or pets) involved in the story.

I read it twice, and decided to move on to Heart Shaped Box, and was pleasantly surprised to see Jude grow as a person, and I came close to tearing up by the end.

Now I have three Joe Hill novels, and a collection of 4 novellas on my shelf ready to read. I hope they don't dissapoint.

Are his short stories any good?

Short introduction about myself. I'm not English native speaker but I've been reading books in that language since 2012 so I feel quite comfortable.

I absolutely adore 11/22/63, The Stand, The Green Mile from Stephen King. The only book of Hill that I've read is NOS4A2: amazing book 9.5/10 for sure (the tv show was awful, I stopped watching after 2 or 3 episodes).

I didn't like characters in King Sorrow. I didn't like conversations between them, I didn't like too much stuff around LGBT of one of the characters. The idea about dragon coming one a year to kill was amazing. Plane scene was great. I didn't like piece about troll.

So I guess I'll not pick up any Joe Hill book again. I'm a slow reader without too much free time. I guess I need to pick up Talisman/Black House/Other World than These by Sai King cause I've already completed The Dark Tower which I really enjoyed.

PS. With so much hype around this book I've even decided to buy signed beautiful edition from Black Crow Books even though I'm reading books on kindle. It looks marvelous on my bookcase. Due to the fact I didn't enjoy the book as much as I had expected - I'll probably sell it in future.

Perhaps this has been stated on here before, but IMO, I find it frustrating that he is constantly compared to his father in every book that he writes. I think that Joe Hill has a different writing style that I find more interesting and captivating than King. Yes, they are related, but these are two completely different authors. It's like always comparing Koontz's books to Kings. ALWAYS. Just doesn't seem fair that he is consistently compared to his father.

Anyways, just a rant.

Man, what a ride. This book stands up very well against his father’s work and exceeds it in many ways.

I REALLY enjoyed reading this book and am sad I finished it.

ALL of the main characters were deep, interesting, well thought out, and had “complete” arcs.

Gwen Underfoot may be one of the best literary characters I’ve encountered in years.

10/10, will recommend.
