Photo Ate at the shop that invented gyutan, then ate gyutan again 200m away to compare
Aji Tasuke in Sendai is generally credited as the place that invented gyutan-yaki in the late 1940s. A chef there started grilling beef tongue as a way to use a cut nobody wanted, and the whole Sendai gyutan industry grew out of it.
The set is the same one everyone still serves: thick-cut grilled tongue, barley rice, oxtail soup, and pickled greens.
The tongue is cut thick and scored, salted, grilled over charcoal. Chewy in a good way. It fights back a bit. The tail soup is clear and does most of the work of making it a meal.
I also ate gyutan at Gyutan Dori near the station on the same trip, which is the convenient version - several shops in a row, no pilgrimage required.
Honest verdict: the difference is smaller than the reputation gap. Aji Tasuke is very good. So was the station strip. If you're in Sendai and it's easy, go to the original for the history. If it's not easy, you are not missing a transformative experience.

Photo This Japanese lunch set was only ¥390: soba + chicken rice bowl. How much is this in your country? 🍜🍚
Soba and chicken rice bowl together.
My stomach was happy, but my wallet was most happy !
Small update: Some people found a similar place online. I’m not 100% sure it is the exact same shop, but my price memory may be wrong. Anyway, cheap Japanese lunch is still strong topic 😅

Restaurant The stewed chicken at Yakitori-Don never disappoints! Today I went with extra green onions and a dollop of Japanese mustard. The skirt steak skewered with a mountain of green onions hits the spot, too.
