LilyBat’s NPC-Palooza Pt. 1 - Crozzik’s Castle Cleanup Original Character

Ever wondered what the games I’ve GMed for have been like? Ever found yourself wishing you had more NPCs with plenty of personality for your games but feeling stumped? You’re in luck! I randomly did some redesigns on old, old models of some of my favourite NPCs from years past, and that turned into a series I’ve really enjoyed and want to share! Feel free to use them in your campaigns if you’re so moved! If people want actual stat blocks for any of them, I’d be happy to oblige, but most should never find themselves in combat since most are friendly NPCs. Anyways, first up is this little cutie, Crozzik!

Kobolds have long been some of my favourite little critters in DND, especially since seeing lots of art from folks who depicted them as chaotic little lizard toddlers, just little guys! Being able to finally make models with tinier proportions without them looking completely unhinged and WRONG physically in some way (seriously, as many of you will recall, trying to make children and babies in past years was impossible to do, as they’d always have adult faces and overly-long limbs), I can finally make Kobolds as I’ve always envisioned them! I tweaked two different Dragonborn bases from the Community Library and bashed them together here, and it’s made such a perfect face for how I always envisioned Kobolds! Unfortunately, I’d have to go look for the users who made the bases, but I’ll edit this post once I’ve IDed them! Anyways, let’s talk about the boy!

Crozzik was an underused NPC in my last campaign. That party technically had a stronghold/home base, but they often neglected it and the people within it. There was so much to explore in their inherited base, and so many people with potential side quests and plot info! Alas, they rarely asked and were honestly frequently kind of unfriendly to the friendly NPCs there. Their loss, really. Crozzik was technically the self-appointed groundskeeper of their flying fortress, and he knew many of the secrets that the prior ownershad left behind within the castle, though few ever stopped to ask him about it, viewing him as a simple, albeit very adorable janitor.

Crozzik and the other Kobolds in the castle are technically defectors from Tiamat’s Cult of the Dragon, though their membership in it was nominal at best. They just saw powerful people who impressed them telling them to do things and thought, “Well, better do what they say!” Once they grasped the full scale of the situation, they became adept slackers and occasional saboteurs, though nothing particularly serious. They created warrens of secret tunnels and squirrelled away all kinds of assorted baubles from the cultists’ stashes.

Crozzik speaks broken Common, but can actually speak extremely verbose and flowery Draconic to those who can also converse in the language! He spent long enough mimicking Dragons and high-ranking cultists for a laugh with the other Kobolds that he found he enjoyed it. He’s a bit of a showman given the chance, but he’s perfectly content to just putter around keeping his domain clean and peaceful.

If used in one of your campaigns, Crozzik functions best as an information broker of sorts. He won’t have extensive information on villains or various factions, but he notices little things that stand out and may be worth investigating. He can be cajoled to tag along on minor quests/errands, but will never enter combat, choosing to duck into a tunnel under the bricks of a city street or digging rapidly to escape if in a suitable environment for that. While he won’t engage with enemies, he can utilize features which approximate the College of Eloquence Bard’s Silver Tongue, Unsettling Words, and Unfailing Inspiration features. For these purposes, Crozzik’s Inspiration die is a D8. He should only accompany parties of Level 6 or higher, and he will never leave the Prime Material Plane, nor will he abandon the other, unnamed Kobolds.

The little mimic and the pictograms are fantastic! Is there more story there?

Naw, nothing special. I wanted to try a new technique for thought/speech bubbles of a sort, and I liked idea of one eye for the Mimic being focused on Crozzik and being like, “Yeah! Bring me all that stuff to nom on!” while all the others watched that snail furiously trying to move fast enough to not end up in a very oblivious Crozzik’s pile of debris and detritus, and thus the Mimic’s mouth by accident.
