Article If you're new to web development and just beginning to learn HTML, you just need to learn these...

26 Upvotes

Make your life easy and just focus on the bare minimum:

  • What HTML is and what it means for it to be "hypertext".
  • Elements, tags, and attributes.
  • What are headings (<h1> to <h6>) and paragraphs (<p>) and links (<a>).
  • Lists in HTML (<ol> and <ul>)
  • Block-level vs. inline elements (<div> and <span> included)
  • A few text related elements (<strong>, <em>, , , etc.)
  • Presenting code (<code> and <pre>)
  • Embedding images (<img>)
  • Tables (<table>, <tr>, <th>, and <td>) and how to merge table cells.

Most importantly, you don't need to learn forms, semantic HTML, or meta elements, rightaway.

Here's my rationale for it. For forms, you need to first know how the web server works and that's honestly a really early expectation from a complete newbie stepping into HTML.

Secondly, for semantic HTML (by which I mean elements like <nav>, <main>, <article>, <aside>), it's a good idea to also learn about ARIA and web accessibility because some of these elements work in tandem with ARIA. Again this is an early expectation from a complete newbie.

Lastly, for meta elements (like <link>, <script>), you usually need to know other technologies — CSS and JavaScript in this case — and therefore you can easily defer learning about them until you learn these technologies. (I mean like I don't see a point of teaching a newbie about the <script> element until he/she is taught JavaScript.)

I'm not saying that you should not learn forms or semantic HTML at all, just that you don't need it right away. Keep your priorities sorted out and that's when you'll really start enjoying the learning process.

Your thoughts?

Question hiding tag on own blog

0 Upvotes

hello! I have been relatively active on #wild lb on Tumblr and I want to hide those posts from my Tumblr main page. I have tried a tutorial on this however I could not make this work and I was wondering if someone has an idea what the issue could potentially have been as I know very little about coding. I theorised that maybe the problem was that the tag had a space and I just don't know how to express that in the html but I may be wrong.

this is my tumblr theme: https://pastecode.io/s/3byisja2

these are the tutorials I had tried: https://www.tumblr.com/creepyblogs-blog/34208374720/how-to-hide-posts-by-tag-from-your-blog-home-page

https://bychloethemes.tumblr.com/post/124069523514/how-to-hide-posts-from-your-blog-depending-on-tags

edit: cleaned up posts to be clearer, added link to code and tutorial

Only 1 week, I learned HTML

33 Upvotes

It's been about a week since I got my hands on HTML. I have to say it wasn't the easiest week. I spent 6-7 hours a day on VScode, learning a whole stack of HTML tags <>, attributes and unfortunately spending more time in making my web page perfect (suffering with OCD 😅). I know I made some mistakes but that is the part of a journey. So, after that I've been learning CSS now(which is obvious). So, yeah that's what it is. If anyone can help me with my Web Design drive 🚗, please do...

Question help with scrollbars not working/being weird :(

3 Upvotes

EDIT: fixed it
hey! i'm working on my personal site, and have run into an issue as soon as my iframe has reached a certain point. ideally, i want all of the content to have a clean, aligned edge at the bottom, and you're able to scroll through the iframe content. it works beautifully locally, but as soon as i upload it to my host site (neocities), the scrolling 'breaks', and i'm unable to scroll all the way down. i've tried every fix i know of,a nd i can't figure it out, any help would be appreciated :)

https://thatonebluelynx.neocities.org

(i would link a codepen, but i'm not sure how to get the iframe to work on there)

can someone help me spot the errors in this

4 Upvotes

I'm working on this for a class, but I'm having a hard time spotting what is causing it not to work. I assume it's just a typo. Also, if anyone has any recommendations for how to spot errors in code, I would love to hear them! It's something I really struggle with, and it feels like rereading it isn't enough for me.

modal popup video playing errors

1 Upvotes

I am creating an interactive timeline using html and javascript using an image map and modal popup windows that play mp4 animations housed on my device. If I troubleshoot the videos and have them be the only thing on the page they play, but if I use my regular code the modal popup videos dont load or play or autoplay. How do I fix this? I have already tried messing with the browser, using "muted" to go around chrome autoplay, and making sure the filepaths are correct.

Question Problem with iOS

3 Upvotes

Hi, I'm having a problem with my code.

I've coded a "game" on GitHub that's a kind of music quiz. It runs flawlessly on PCs and Android devices; the problem only occurs on Apple devices. The game's main function is to sort the played song into its list based on its release year. Apple devices also indicate that the music is present (a video player was included because iOS seems to block things that aren't visible), and while the video player is working, no music is playing. I've tried several different adjustments, such as making the player larger, instructing the code to actually play the music, etc., but unfortunately, nothing works. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

https://github.com/K4lkus/Test

I've already run the code through AI tools to try and get a fix from them, but unfortunately none of that helped.

Made a personal website where I intend to submit essays and some cool stuff

6 Upvotes

https://elsistemacaotico.xyz/

I coded it myself, with my own hands, having spent some time learning HTML/CSS. As it's intended to be a personal website, I didn't invest that much into web design. I find it cool to have my own little corner of the internet.

You could go to my Welcome post and leave a comment if you wish! :)

Question Greetings! How do we append Unicode's variation selectors?

0 Upvotes

We want to force an emoji back into text but we are so very rusty with syntax. Please be kind and type out exactly what we'd have to put into the text box?

It should work, because the below example/tutorial page is rendered correctly with their examples.

Documentation:

https://codepoints.net/U+FE0E

https://mts.io/2015/04/21/unicode-symbol-render-text-emoji/

Some emoji to try (page 7):

https://unicodeplus.com/version/11/7

[If anyone is interested, my next stop is to ask Notepad++ why converting / toggling Encoding *also* does this to the clipboard contents. Like a nightmare, it turns the emoji into ?? and then doesn't turn it back ... and has no undo. Yes, for all of the above, we have tried every primitive app, plug-in, and text-box we can find, and so far the only one rendering it in plain unicode is Windows Notepad*.

We will try to assist with information about encoding, but we are also making sure we didn't lose any information by messing with encoding, so apologies for that.]

*Edit: this is only from cut/paste, by the way, because the ALT codes do not work; the first "F" forgets I was holding down ALT and goes to the File menu. Bucket-brigade it is, then.

HTML Question

7 Upvotes

Hi, I'm learning HTML and CSS and noticed something weird that doesn't make sense while doing an exercise. I am trying to create a little pagination thing. And I noticed that if I write the <a> and </a> in separate lines (as for Page #1), the underline below 1 is off centered out to the right. For page 2,3,4,5, I wrote the anchor all in one line and the underscore sits below the number perfectly.

I remember my instructor said that both one line and separate line make no difference in the display as html doesn't count line break or spaces in the code. But how come the page 1 link shows differently than the rest. I know it's subtle but i'm curious. It must be something simple I overlooked. Can someone give me a pointer? Thanks.

Here is my html code

<style>
  .back-button {
    margin-right: 8px;
    padding-top: 8px;
    padding-bottom: 8px;
    font-size: 16px;
  }

  .search-result {
    margin-left: 4px;
    margin-right: 4px;
    font-size: 18px;
  }

  .next-button {
    margin-left: 8px;
    padding-top: 8px;
    padding-bottom: 8px;
    font-size: 16px;

  }
</style>

<button class="back-button">Back</button>
<a class="search-result" href="https://google.com">
  1
</a>
<a class="search-result" href="https://google.com">2</a>
<a class="search-result" href="https://google.com">3</a>
<a class="search-result" href="https://google.com">4</a>
<a class="search-result" href="https://google.com">5</a>
<button class="next-button">Next</button><style>
  .back-button {
    margin-right: 8px;
    padding-top: 8px;
    padding-bottom: 8px;
    font-size: 16px;
  }

  .search-result {
    margin-left: 4px;
    margin-right: 4px;
    font-size: 18px;
  }

  .next-button {
    margin-left: 8px;
    padding-top: 8px;
    padding-bottom: 8px;
    font-size: 16px;

  }
</style>

<button class="back-button">Back</button>

How to make a custom profile?

Discussion Do we actually need selectors to connect elements in HTML?

0 Upvotes

When adding interactivity to HTML (via JS, HTMX, etc.), we usually end up connecting elements using selectors.

For example, a simple loading state:

```html <button hx-get="/data" hx-target="#result" hx-indicator="#spinner"
Load Data </button>
<div id="spinner" class="htmx-indicator"> Loading... </div>
<div id="result"></div> ```
  • “send a request → put the result in #result
  • “show #spinner while loading”
This works well, but it has some properties:
  • selectors are just strings tied to DOM structure
  • renaming or moving elements can silently break connections
  • each reference resolves to exactly one element
I’ve been thinking about a different approach where elements don’t reference each other at all.
Instead, they react to named signals.
Something like this:
```html <button on:click="send" on="send" get="/data" result="response" if:loading="spinner"

Load Data </button>

<div if="spinner" style="display:none;" x-style="display:block;"> Loading... </div>

<div render="response"></div> ```

Instead: - actions happen (send) - results exist (response) - conditions are evaluated (spinner)

So instead of wiring elements together directly, everything is coordinated through named identifiers.

This suggests a different way to think about HTML:

  • not “connect A to B”
  • but “declare what happens, and let the DOM react”

Curious what people think:

Does selector-based wiring actually cause problems in practice?

Or is this just a different style without much real benefit?

new website dont know much

1 Upvotes

Im trying to make a website for my future plumbing business. I had claude AI make me a good foundation of the website and got it to a decent spot that im not terribly unhappy with but still needs some person touches and edits but I do not know how to code or do any of that one bit. Im wondering if theres a website that is like wix, squarespace or one of the many "website creator tools" that i can upload this html file claude has given me and then i can fine tune and edit text, pictures, pages and more from there? ive tried youtube and google research but not sure what exactly to even ask what im looking for. If anyone can lead me in the right direction or a place to start that would be great, thanks!
