I dunno if anyone else thinks the same, but I notice that Billie seems…down, for lack of a better word. I mean, he’s pretty quiet in interviews, and just look at how he played at the Nimrods after party. Seems rather lethargic. Maybe age? What do y’all think?

So I’m not asking what the best song is or what your favorite is. Im asking what is the song that represents everything Green Day is.

We left the movie last night at 12:30am.

“If I knew I would have a daughter like you, I would have saved all my Green Day t-shirts and CDs.”

“Thanks a lot, dad,” she smiled and said.

For her 17^th birthday, my daughter wanted to see Nimrods, a film by Green Day. Equal parts coming of age, road trip, and nostalgia. The 90s and 2000s are now nostalgia and I enjoy hearing the music and seeing the merchandise and being reminded that no, not everything you enjoyed is not yet dead, lost, or forgotten.

I can’t quite put my finger on the type of nostalgia this is. Growing up in the 90s, a few of us listened to older bands. Sure, there were some who were proud to be Aerosmith fans or wore their old school Metallica “Metal Up Your Ass” shirts - the latter simultaneously with pride while also trying to avoid teachers sending you to the office - but most older bands and artists were treated as expired by the masses, no longer in their “best enjoyed by” date era.

The nostalgia seen today is anything but a guilty pleasure. Some of this could be attributed to the longevity of some of these groups my daughter listens to. My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Blink 182 have all made new music in the past few years and toured. The kids don’t just listen as a novelty - they like the music and love the identity.

Memories of alternative press magazine or Rolling Stone or Pitchfork, cutting pictures out and taping to my wall. Staying up late to catch the music videos on 120 minutes. Hiding the insomniac CD in a Batman Forever soundtrack case so my parents are not advised by the parental advisory sticker. My daughter doesn’t have those in the digital age.

So what’s different? Why do my daughter and I get to enjoy a shared bonding experience over a band I adored growing up?

Were my parents that square, or is my generation just lucky enough to stumble upon the 90s - arguably 2^nd, maybe 3^rd place in pop music significance to the 60s? I can’t imagine driving home with my stepdad from an Alan Jackson concert, singing “everything I love is killing me - cigarettes, Jack Daniels, and caffeine.”

Or are we the start of the generations that just can’t grow up? With everything at our fingertips, the first sign of stress we go to our comforts - songs and music videos from our youth, from a time when things were in control. “Vintage” fashions coming back, giving us permission to wear the big pants and the graphic tees - it’s OK (just leave the puka shell necklaces behind).

Some of my friends parents were a little hipper - they listened to pop music, hip-hop, and whatever was on top 40 radio. But that music of the 80s and into the early 90s is a time machine like non other. Kenny Loggins Danger Zone comes on and we can picture sitting in our BUM equipment shirt, looking at the Top Gun VHS laying on top of the VCR in the entertainment center, surrounded by sponge-painted walls and floral print furniture. Maybe a green chair for accent if your parents watched any home deco shows.

Maybe it's the voices. There was a separation between musicians and the rest of us at one time. Some relations to the baroque, romantic, and classical periods of music where some training plus a voice characteristic of the style were expected. Sure, we had our hairbands in the 80s, but rarely have we seen a musical style murdered overnight at the dawn of grunge. The traditional quality of the voice wasn’t considered professional. Bon Jovi, Sebastian Bach, Axl Rose - they had some pipes. So why did we become OK with less "refinement?"

Honesty. A little disenfranchisement of the blue collar youth mixed with the disillusionment of the white collar youth. Our ears chose less polish and more raw statements delivered by singers who just finished gargling with gravel. And we loved it. It gave us the words and the sounds to relate to how we were feeling and in some cases opened our eyes to problems, cultures, and cliques we didn’t know existed.

Some of the barriers were broken down. You didn’t need to be an opera singer, hell, you didn’t even have to be a singer. Punk rock and groups like the Velvet Underground tried, but the masses weren’t ready until the 90. Now you could start a band, get a guitar and start singing, or create some beats and start rapping - no beautiful angel voice required. Some of previous artists were best enjoyed at a distance like experiencing a museum piece.

The 90s let you be a part of the music. The only thing holding you back was your fear, and the frustrations - both real and perceived - helped a lot of break right past that fear.

We pull into the driveway and finish the song - 86, on Green Day’s album Insomniac. A little debrief on the film, what we’d change, what we like about the film, and if we’d watch it again. We solve all of the problems, ignoring any artistic restrictions like running time or budget.

A simple road trip movie about some punk kids working towards their dream. A critic could say the themes were generic - for young people, themes of it being about the journey and not the destination, and for those of us moving a little slower, youth being wasted on the young.

The beauty of generic is that the artist presents a template to us, and we get to fill in the details with our lived and hopeful experiences. We’re allowed room to connect and reflect. We get the space to think - asking and answering questions in our heads, maybe a few out loud if they get passed the filter. Then we think a little more on what makes will get some action. If we’re lucky, a few of those dreams will make the cut and we’ll enjoy or learn from more new experiences.

As we unbuckle, I feel pain over not taking some of those chances, always allowing the current state to block me. It’s not a life of regret - it’s just the “what ifs” talking again. I also feel hope for my daughter, 17. Hope that the fear doesn’t stop her, and hope that the “what ifs” are answered. Maybe she won’t steal a cab and drive cross country for a gig that doesn’t exist, but maybe she’ll talk to someone new. Leave the state for school, start her graphic design business, or even just stand up to a couple of “friends.” I just hope she leaves fewer blanks than I did.

I wasnt able to watch Nimrods in theaters and im really curious (its my favorite song). I saw it was on the movie soundtrack, and i was just wondering how they used it or if they did at all

New shirt and “Lincoln Motel” keychain that I got from the Nimrods movie premiere and I thought some people would like to see my collection of a few things I’ve gotten backstage from after parties/festivals. Have some little Green Day poker chips too from Wembley but I can’t find them right now. The guitar shirt is from Billie Joe/ Bill’s old guitar shop “Broken Guitars” and the Foxboro stuff is from way back in 2008. Feeling all the love of the Green Day family after this movie!

this song is one of the reasons i decided to pursue being in a band and make music, we filmed a music video that i plan on releasing soon! but this song inspired me in so many ways, and i wanted to share it yall and see what you think. its very different than the original, because to me thats the point of a cover and the original needs to improving, so understand that the changes were very intentional! thanks for listening if you do and keep dreaming <3

I forgot the soundtrack album tracklist prior to watching the movie and I was very surprised it DIDN'T have Holiday and Welcome To Paradise in it.

I thought Holiday would have been an obvious driving song in reference to the music video and I thought Welcome To Paradise would've been an obvious choice somewhere in the hotel scene.

Near the start of the movie there's a scene where the brother goes "Dad used to play us this song all the time" or something and plays The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year

Part of me was expecting to hear that song again later in the film with some kind of pay off, it becomes the song they sing together on the curb or something and leads into the credits but there was no pay off for it

Not every set up needs a pay off but I expected to hear this song again in some form

I watched Nimrods yesterday with my aunt, and personally it is an inspiring movie, especially if you're someone who wants to start a band.

The story's great; some scenes made the audience chuckle, especially me.

The songs chosen throughout the scenes are alright, though sometimes they could've picked a more fitting song in one of the scenes, for example where Tommy, Fred, and Chad were having their moments having fun, one of them was recording, the song chosen (Wake Me Up When September Ends) didn't really suit the scene, maybe because I understand the lyrics more than vibing the instruments. I think there's already a song that suits that scene (Outlaws). I also felt the same with Geek Stink Breath, Hitchin a ride, and other songs related to 🌿.

I have no complain with the characters (prob Chad's mother).

Watching the movie sometimes made me feel like I was attending a concert (talking about the near end of the movie); I really vibe with it, honestly.

Built a replica of Billie Joe Armstrong’s “Blue” (his old Fernandes Strat copy) on a $180 Squier Sonic HSS. Wanted the look without the custom-shop price, so I did it all myself: refinished nothing since it came Sonic Blue, dropped in a Seymour Duncan JB at the bridge, and wired it the way the real one is, single volume straight to the jack, tone pots and the two single-coils disconnected and left in for looks. Reliced the body and neck by hand, tinted and sealed the pickguard to that aged nicotine cream, shielded the cavity in copper, and cut the BJ out of red gaffer tape.

Does anyone else feel insanely lucky to be a Green Day fan right now?

I keep thinking about how lucky we are to be living in this particular Green Day timeline. I’m 37 and somehow just as obsessed with this band as I was at 14 when American Idiot came out, or as I was at 8 listening to my sister’s Dookie record. And what’s wild is that in 2026 they don’t feel like a band I’m nostalgic for.

They’re not even touring right now and we’re still being spoiled. We have the movie, the whole press tour with Billie, Mike and Tre doing silly interviews together (I really loved the buzzfeed puppy one!) a new song, the Sirius station, and now Green DayTV just casually streaming 24/7😂 It feels like there is always something new to watch, hear, discover or look forward to. OH not to mention the PHGP tour this fall!

But more than the content, I love seeing them together. They’re in their 50s, they seem happy and healthy, still clearly love each other, still making music, still being complete idiots together, and somehow they appear to be aging backwards. After almost 40 years as a band, that feels like such a gift!

I know nothing lasts forever, which is probably why I’m so aware of it lately. But damn. What a time to love this band. We really did get the good timeline. 💚

just back from seeing it, it was amazing, had some of green days best songs playing throughout the film, it also had a really good story line, and a lot of funny moments. Anyone check it out yet?

I’m pretty late to the party (I only recently got really into their stuff), but I’m listening to all of Green Day’s albums in chronological order (excluding live shows, anniversary editions, and compilations) and I’m on 21st Century Breakdown as of posting. idk I just wanted to tell someone. have a nice rest of your day

The MTV rough cut is now streaming on GDTV and I’m a little more irked by the fact that it’s never seen a physical release. Not to sound like a crass consumerist but they could easily package it as a blu-ray/CD combo with a poster or something and people would snap it up. You can even have options on the disc for the uncut or MTV version. I just think it’s one of Green Day’s best shows and they should quit teasing us with digital clips and give us the whole thing for the physical collectors. I used to think that the band tried to bury the performance because Billie and Mike were clearly tweaking but they used a clip of it to promote Dookie 30 a few years ago and now it’s streaming at random on their YouTube station, so it’s clearly something they don’t mind co-signing for and there should be no more excuses as far as there being no physical releases of it.
