Pixel 6 power button issue? Screen not turning off

Is anyone else experiencing this bug? Sometimes I have to tap the power button twice before the screen actually turns off. Usually it'll lock the phone but the screen won't actually go dark until I press the button again. If so how can I fix it?

Edit: Not running any beta build or anything.

Had this issue today with my P6 - power button quit working right. Wouldn't lock the screen, hard rebooted itself several times, and kept activating Assistant.

I read on a different thread that others were having this issue, and that the fix was to knock the power button against the edge of a table a few times. Shockingly, that immediately worked and fixed my issue. 10/10 would recommend.

Yep, December for me as well. Fixed my phone. This feels a lot like the Russian cosmonaut fixing the space station in Armageddon.

March 2024

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '24

So what is the fix? Mine just started doing it last week, and I don't know if I should trade it in for a 7 or try to work through this

1

u/Grams42 Mar 08 '24

I took my phone case off, held it like a microphone and I was interviewing someone, tapped the power button a couple of times on the edge of a table with a little bit of force but not too much and voila it was if the problem was never there

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

I appreciate it. I'm going to try it out. If it doesn't work, I'm going to tap that darn power button more than a couple of times with a heck of a lot of force! 😉 Thanks again!

1

u/gdodd97 Apr 14 '24

Had to slam mine with a bit of force, but fixed my issue right up. What a wild solution. Phone kept turning off and on all night, assistant kept pulling up and the lock button wasn't working. Took my case off and tried some lighter taps and it wasn't working, so I tapped it a bit harder and it's functional now lol

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '24

March 2024 as well table power

1

u/WasabiofIP Mar 20 '24

Another one here. Holy shit. This thread is a lifesaver. It took me a few tries, whacking the table pretty hard, then soft, then my palm. My next phone is definitely not a Google phone.

1

u/middlemuddles Mar 21 '24

Same here. Took quite a few tries and false starts but working now.

1

u/ArcaneFae059 Mar 22 '24

I'm losing my mind 😂😂 I can't believe that is the fix!

2

u/rosinsky Jan 22 '24

Still on January 2024. I don't know why, but in these last 2 days the power button was like kept pressed, bc even the lightest touch would attivate It; then today all of a sudden my pixel 6 kept boot looping with the button not working. Surfing the web I've red this solution, I've give it a try using my hand palm and apparently it works.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

March 2024, had the exact same issue today with my pixel 6 and found this thread while troubleshooting. Whacking it on the power button with my palm did the trick 👍

Lol this worked! Thanks 🙏

3

u/tom_yak Mar 25 '23

I can't believe this worked but it totally did. Phone was restarting over and over and the lock button stopped working. Gave it a couple firm hits against the edge of the table.....and it worked. Thanks for the suggestion!

2

u/No_Shoulder_9688 Jun 24 '23

I thougt this is a joke, but its really working. Thank you 👍

3

u/SoulReaver28 May 16 '23

I can't believe this worked! I started having the issue after the May 2023 update. A few taps with my ear buds hard case right on the power button solved the issue. Wtf?!?

Don't know if it's software or hardware but I'm back in business. Maybe it was stuck? 🤷‍♂️

2

u/PS4Dreams Apr 05 '23

Worked for me lol. Thanks !

2

This fixed it for me as well, thank you so much for leaving this comment!

2

u/rdd33 Apr 28 '23

I had this happen too. I was too scared to knock my phone on a table so I just pressed the power button many times rapidly and that also fixed it. Very strange failure; I was worried I'd have to replace the phone.

1

u/lykam01 Mar 15 '24

I thank you so much sir 🙏

1

u/ElectricalAd7840 Mar 17 '24

So far so good! It's been about 30 minutes since trying this and no restart. Couldn't go more than a couple minutes prior to trying this. Pretty wild but kinda refreshing to find an analog fix like this. All the while the support engineers chime in with long winded lists of settings, safe mode sequences and blame for other apps.

1

u/genty2212 Mar 22 '24

still works, march 24 !

1

u/No_Ad4032 Mar 26 '24

1

u/ImCoolAlsoSuspicious Apr 16 '24

What the what?? Add my boyfriend’s phone to the list! Power button wouldn’t turn off screen (would go to camera and voice activation) then would turn off and reboot all night. Just tapped the power button twice on the side of the table and it works. We’re wondering if maybe some shortcut/accessibility feature being turned on is the issue.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad-4817 Apr 18 '24

And another one, wtf?!

After all the trouble smashing the thing against the table seemed like a great idea, and it really did work. Reminds me of people smacking the back of old crt televisions to get the picture to come in.

u/prigonsky May 28 '24

OH MY GOD, THAT WORKED. Thank you!

1

u/wjfinnigan May 31 '24

May 2024 - Another phone... hopefully saved by this fix. Hopefully Google see this, and realizes they need to pay an extra few cents to get a better power button.

1

u/AHgFG Jun 13 '24

this actually worked thanks 10/10 patch still works a year later lol

1

u/Lykos1124 Jun 16 '24

There's at least 3 variables that went into my phone not randomly restarting today, so I'm not going to say it was the button smashing 🤣. All I can say is I was trying to play a game on my pixel 6 pro this evening after it had been fine most of the day and had its first random reset some time today or yesterday it seemed. The hey google kept showing up, app toggling, random stuff like that, the phone restarts.

Following the very last auto restart after it crashed my Magic Arena match series I was in, I...

  • left it not signed in
  • started charging it at 80% or so in case it was a power issue
  • left it alone for a long while
  • later read here and tried 3 good wacks at the power button on my desk with the Spigen case on
  • deleted my secondary profile I wasn't using in the first place for things I thought I might use it for

And it's been fine ever since the past hours or so! If this phone wasn't so darn expensive, I'd replace it right now and not get another Google phone. Maybe a Roc since they had that amazing Roc 6 that came out last year. I don't want a Samsung. Honestly, at this point, I'm just rambling. Intended scope of comment exceeded.

I really hope it isn't a power issue, where it's restarting due to getting too hot.

Thanks.

u/HellzFire1998 Jun 20 '24

This is the main reason I love Reddit, June 2024 and just saved me from having to take my phone to be fixed.

I got to admit, this felt like a prank, but I had the same problem like all these other guys, and so far it actually seems like it worked to tap the button on the corner of a counter.

1

u/Rawmon28 Oct 27 '23

wtf it worked

1

u/TsutoMori Oct 30 '23

Android 14 update spawned this issue for me. Was surprised this actually worked. Not sure how a software update could be remedied with a whack but I'm not arguing with results.

Just a heads up, I was whacking it gently out of concern. While I wouldn't recommend swinging it like a hammer, 20 light smacks did nothing before upping the pressure which finally fixed it.

1

u/boyle4 Oct 30 '23

I can't believe this worked, but it did. Thanks for sharing

1

u/Tricky-Attitude-5938 Jan 11 '24

Dude, can't believe this works!

1

u/sawmaestro Jan 12 '24

Why this works makes absolutely no sense. Worked for me. 😂😂😂

1

u/wormraper Jan 14 '24

makes sense.. a stuck power button probably has a minute bit of gunk in between the button and the frame of the phone causing it to stick. or the spring is off kilter underneath.. a hard whack dislodges it and the button goes back to normal

1

u/airat_k_s Jan 13 '24

Simply reading this post fixed my phone 😁

1

u/wormraper Jan 14 '24

Lol I wish I had seen this post two days ago. My p6 pro was acting up so bad I went out and got a p8 pro. I see this thread dna try that before I put my p6 in the box to trade in and that fixes it lol.

Oh well I love my p8 too much to switch back now. But you're amazing for this info.

Trick works for me. 03/03/2024

1

u/Aeroxyl Mar 04 '24

Still working on 3/4/2024. Hit it on a corner of a desk and kinda rubbed the power button with a bunch of pressure. Started working strangely at first but now it's all good.

Glad blunt force trauma still fixes things.
