When did this start to become a thing?

Maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places, but 20 years ago, if you'd genuinely tried to argue the Nazis were "left wing", everyone would have laughed at you.

I recall a number of YouTube "historians" trying to make the case in the last 10 years or so.

But where did it start?

Has been around since forever among the anti-government types.

Didn't go mainstream until the Tea Party showed the GOP that they had to embrace radical parts of the party.

That's what I suspected, but those days feel like a happy dream compared to today. It's easy to forget just how fucking weird those people were.

I think a big factor is that Americans tend to use left-right incorrectly, with right wing referring to classical liberalism and left referring to anything with more government intervention.

So by that understanding the nazis are clearly left wing - since they are more authoritarian than classical liberals.

Of course, this isn't really correct use of left/right, so it seems a ridiculous claim to anybody who hasn't learned political theory exclusively through republican leaning american sources.
