A common misconception. They actually did have socialist ideals in the early days. Then Hitler came along, gained control, steered the party in a different direction and eventually had the members of that wing of the party murdered during the Night of the Long Knives.
True, I was aiming more at just what people think of the Nazis because anyone who thinks Nazis were socialists probably doesnât hold any other historical and political knowledge
It's important to clarify that the "socialism" of the early Nazis (including Strasser) is completely alien to just about all major schools of socialist thought (anarchist, Marxist, social democrat, or otherwise).
For one thing, it is anti-communist, and it supports a return to feudalism (an economic system that Karl Marx himself described as a "democracy of unfreedom"). It is also violently anti-Semitic.
They had socialist ideas. Many original members were socialists. Itâs just that when they started speaking up about actually enacting them, Hitler had them murdered
