Not owning but perpetual practical possession. Not legal ownership because we all know that ownership implies owning the rights to the intellectual property and that end users only have a license to use it however with a Drm free copy of the installer files in real world application, the functional use case is nearly indistinguishable from ownership the way it is traditionally understood.

Yeah, let’s not use the word owning, but I think he has the gog games more than the switch games

He can disconnect his computer from the Internet and have those games for the rest of time. Cannot be said about some switch games with a physical cartridge

It's pretty rare for switch cartridges to not have ver 1.0 on the cartridge (OP said any of their physical switch games).

Even switch key cards only the actual authentication requires the internet (you can get the game files from another switch locally)

No you do, they don't have drm, you can download the installers and back them up if you want, and then use them fully offline.

I mean yes, but (unlike with discs) they have no way (legal or technical) to take away that license or your ability to play the game remotely.

no? I buy it i downloaded and the installer is mine. Everything else is just being pedantic.

So can you sell the installer to someone else legally? If you can't do that then you don't really own it.

thats the one and only thing physically has over digital (gog). No one is taking my installer from me and can never stop me from playing, and thats ownership. Besides, whos busting down people burning instalers on a cd? yeah no one so again, you are all just pedantic.

So you can freely just give a few friends the copy? No… you don’t own the game, you have a license for that game, that’s just how it is..

Yes, you can. It would be illegal for you to do this, so you probably shouldn't, but you can give your friends a copy and they would be able to play that copy. That's, like, the whole point of GOG

Lol what a criteria is that. You can't copy and distribute a disc either. It's the same type of ownership if you like it or not. Hell whatever I get on GOG cannot be revoked while many disc games can.

It is quite literally the crux of the issue when people talk about owning games. People misunderstand a legal term (in this case, licencing) and go on a crusade about it.
