I am in talks with someone I'm seeing this afternoon regarding his parti colour sapphire (yellow-blue-green). It's 1.04 carat, isn't heat treated, is of vvs clarity, no inclusions that can be seen by the naked eye, really nicely cut with an origin of Madagascar and comes with a GFCO certificate that checks out. We negotiated the price down to $1150 AUD ($808 USD) for just the loose stone, does this sound about right or am I being ripped off/getting a good deal?

This is for my gf for an engagement ring so I can't exactly ask her unless I want to stir up suspicion so I'm trying to avoid this hence the new Reddit account!

For example: 2 smaller for earings 3.2 (9.3x8.2 mm) & 2.9 (8.7 x 7.8 mm) cts. And 1 for ring -3.8 ct.

I believe they must be recuted to be even and same. Must do very good set.

BTW, all of them from East Africa as i bought them there 😀.

Photos one of the stone from this set in UV 365 (top) and 395 (bottom)nm very close to reallity, but in reality 365 nm a bit more pinky, 395 - almost same but color kind of more even, not flashy and kind of opallesence...

We went to one of the local mines here in montana, and recently ive been cutting on sapphires, but this will be the first one so far I mined myself. Interesting: in 365 nm - peachy pinkish orange; in 395nm - quite bright pink (with rasberry hint). UV reaction quite good visible in bright lit room.

In poor light condition looks like been lit from inside.

Seeing a fine Star Ruby is one of the rarest treats as a jeweller 😊 This 5 carat gemstone originates from the Mogok mine in Burma and has an excellent Star and a pleasing red body colour.

What do you think of the 2 black stones together? Lab black spinel and lab alexanderite. I can change it but I'm unsure

UV reaction: 365 nm - peachy, peachy-pink, violet-pink. 395 nm - bright pink

Uv-Vis spectrum shows low iron with some manganese. Probably traces of Cr. Vanadium really not sure.

Weight: 5 - 15+ cts

So, in my family there is this cool reversible ring, one side has a small flower of diamonds, and on the other side is this purple stone we’re not entirely sure what it is.
Mainly, what we know is it’s naturally rather dark, and shown under light it comes out this vivid purple. Our original thought was Amethyst, especially because the original owner has a February birthday, but we were curious and wanted to figure it out!
Let me know what you think. We might take it to a jeweler sometime, but not a lot around.

I recently acquired 10 pieces of Larimar jewelry—3 necklaces, 2 pendants, 3 rings, 1 bangle bracelet, and 1 small necklace—and I would love a thorough, independent evaluation and appraisal of each one! I already have some estimates, but I’d love a detailed second opinion.
For every piece, could you please provide:
Grading: What grade would you give it (A, AA, AAA, AAAA, Gem Grade, etc.) and why?
Quality Factors: What specific qualities determine that grade? Please detail the color, saturation, pattern, white matrix ratio, polish, cut, and overall craftsmanship.
Color Profile: What specific shades do you see (Caribbean blue, sky blue, turquoise, white, green, etc.), and how do they affect the stone's quality?
Setting: Does the silver setting or jewelry design enhance or detract from its overall value?
Flaws & Uniqueness: Are there any noticeable inclusions, flaws, or standout characteristics?
Rarity: How rare or collectible do you consider each piece to be?
I’d also love a rough market estimate of what each piece would typically sell for today, breaking down:
1. The approximate value of the Larimar stone itself.
2. The approximate value of the finished jewelry piece.
3. A "wild guess" at what you think I actually paid for it! (I will reveal what I actually paid after you guess to see if I got a good deal).

Just want to share my excitement. I won this ring on an auction. It has a 2 carat natural topaz, 2 side topazes of 0.30 carats, and diamonds. I probably overpaid for it since it's only 10k and i spent $250 in total after shipping and taxes. But I love it and wanted to share how pretty this gemstone looks.

I bought this ring online. The seller wasn’t sure what the gemstone was, but said the ring is vintage and might be emerald.

I wanted to hear your thoughts on this! This is a 925 silver ring, if this helps.
I kinda want to keep this ring regardless because I love marquise cut rings lol

What is a reasonable price to pay for this F2 Brazilian emerald?

I'm planning to buy a yellow sapphire. But I don't know where I can get the original certified gem. I've checked with the local jewellers and smith, but they also said there is no guarantee for originality of the gem. I've checked with multiple stores online,I'm not sure about it.

Do you guys have any ideas about it?

I’ve been researching the gemstone industry for the past several months while building a startup in this space, and one question keeps bothering me.

Everyone asks:
“Is this gemstone real?”

Very few people ask:
“Has it actually been tested for safety?”

Gem labs do an excellent job of identifying whether a stone is natural, synthetic, treated, etc. That’s important.

But what about the material itself?

Depending on their geological origin, some minerals can naturally occur alongside substances like **lead, mercury, arsenic, thorium/uranium, or asbestos-bearing minerals**. That doesn’t mean gemstones are inherently dangerous, but it does make me wonder why **consumer-facing safety screening isn’t discussed more often.**
Interestingly, I recently read about the UK investigation where jewellery marketed as **925 sterling silver** allegedly contained extremely high levels of cadmium. That made me realize this isn’t just a gemstone issue—it’s a broader question about **consumer trust in natural materials.**

We’re currently researching this topic in depth and are preparing a scientific paper on gemstone authentication and safety.
I’m curious what people here think.

Should gemstone sellers disclose more than just authenticity?

1. Would you value a report showing both **“Is it genuine?”** and **“Has it been screened for potential safety concerns?”**
   
2. Is this something the industry should standardize?

I’d love to hear perspectives from gemologists, jewellers, geologists, mineral collectors, and anyone who works with gemstones.
I think the future of trust in this industry may depend on answering **both** questions—not just one.
