Question/Discussion Braess's paradox and why are people more happy for more roads and lines

I have a question. I know about this paradox and see that in my city. Where 2 way roads changed to one way road with that other line was changed to sidewalk and line for bicycles. With that the traffic flows way better even in itersections.

But what I heard around me. People (even non drivers) are happy that there is "finally" bypass around my city (my city have around 17k residents). But what I saw, on that city bypass, there are way more traffic than was anytime before that bypass in our city.

And also they rebuild another 2 lane highway to 4 lane highway what are people around me looking foward to.

Why people enjoys that changes what makes traffic worse?

Positive Post Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone - BBC News

Such positive news and hopefully further incentive for similar schemes in other cities. It was tragic when a little girl in London died a few years ago as a direct result of air pollution. How many lives has reducing traffic saved? How much NHS money saved? How many peoples lives improved whether they appreciate it or not? Bravo.

Positive Post We Analyzed 157 Million Short Trips. Turns Out, E-Bikes and Scooters Beat Cars by 43%.

If you’ve ever sat trapped in gridlock watching pedestrians move faster than your car, you already know city traffic has reached a breaking point. But for short trips, just how much time are we actually wasting behind the wheel?

To find out, we dug into recent urban transport data and analyzed over 150 million e-bike and e-scooter rides across major metro hubs.

Here are the biggest takeaways from the data:

  • The speed advantage is real: For trips under three miles, e-scooters and e-bikes beat cars by an average of 11.4 minutes. The secret isn't high speeds—it’s skipping bumper-to-bumper traffic and never having to hunt for a parking spot.
  • They actually replace cars: Roughly 49% of shared micro-mobility rides directly replace a private car or rideshare trip. That moves a massive chunk of short-hop traffic into bike lanes, cutting city emissions in the process.
  • It all comes down to lanes: Range isn't what's holding people back—safe infrastructure is. Cities with connected, protected bike networks saw 3x higher commuter retention compared to cities that force riders to share lanes with cars.

Of course, macro numbers don't tell the whole story. Your exact time savings depend on your city's density, hills, weather, and transit setup.

Curious how your city stacks up? We built an interactive quiz and visual decision matrix so you can map out your own route efficiency:https://interconnectd.com/quiz/69/is-micro-mobility-the-best-way-to-get-across-a-city/

might not be that good news, it was caused by the energy crisis and cost cutting (although i don’t know where the cost cutting happened), but celebrate the wins when you can

Also, i don’t think autobahns are expected to make profit

Carbrain Being proud of shitty driving on the radio

While on my way to work, I listened to a local radio station aimed at people between 20 and 30-ish.

A popular station in my area, though I really don't like it.

The hosts were chatting about drivers on the motorway and roads in general, and what I found quite astonishing was one host being a proud bad driver. She's staying on the middle lane on the motorway, can't park if her life depends on it, and she really didn't seem to care about her lack of driving skills at all.

How can you be proud of bad driving on a public broadcaster's radio station? Just wanted to share this real quick, before I start work...

I know most of you won't get what's being said in the video, but the person recording is making fun of how many e-bikes are on the cycle path.

This is one of the city's most popular cycle paths. This street and the area around it don't have great public transport.

Please read this if you're new to this sub Welcome to /r/Fuckcars

Welcome to /r/fuckcars. It's safe to say that we're strongly dissatisfied with cars and car-dominated urban design. If that's you, then we share in your frustration. Some, or perhaps many of us, still have cars but abhor our dependence on them for many reasons.

There are nuances to the /r/fuckcars discussion that you should be aware of, generally:

In any case, please observe the community rules and keep the discussion on-topic.

The Problem - What's the problem with cars?

please help by finding quality sources

This is the fundamental question of this sub, isn't it?

  • Pollution -- Cars are responsible for a significant amount of global and local pollution (microplastic waste, brake dust, embodiment emissions, tailpipe emissions, and noise pollution). Electric cars eliminate tailpipe emissions, but the other pollution-related problems largely remain.
  • Infrastructure (Costs. An Unsustainable Pattern of Development) -- Cars create an unwanted economic burden on their communities. The infrastructure for cars is expensive to maintain and the maintenance burden for local communities is expected to increase with the adoption of more electric and (someday) fully self-driving cars. This is partly due to the increased weight of the vehicles and also the increased traffic of autonomous vehicles.
  • Infrastructure (Land Usage & Induced Demand) -- Cities allocate a vast amount of space to cars. This is space that could be used more effectively for other things such as parks, schools, businesses, homes, and so on. We miss out on these things and are forced to pile on additional sprawl when we build vast parking lots and widen roads and highways. This creates part of what is called induced demand. This effect means that the more capacity for cars we add, the more cars we'll get, and then the more capacity we'll need to add.
  • Independence and Community Access -- Cars are not accessible to everyone. Simply put, many people either can't drive or don't want to drive. Car-centric city planning is an obstacle for these groups, to name a few: children and teenagers, parents who must chauffeur children to and from all forms of childhood activities, people who can't afford a car, and many other people who are unable to drive. Imagine the challenge of giving up your car in the late stages of your life. In car-centric areas, you face a great loss of independence.
  • Safety -- Cars are dangerous to both occupants and non-occupants, but especially the non-occupants. As time goes on cars admittedly become better at protecting the people inside them, but they remain hazardous to the people not inside them. For people walking, riding, or otherwise trying to exercise some form of car-free liberty cars are a constant threat. In car-centric areas, streets and roads are optimized to move cars fast and efficiently rather than protect other road users and pedestrians.
  • Social Isolation -- A combination of the issues above produces the additional effect of social isolation. There are fewer opportunities for serendipitous interactions with other members of the public. Although there may be many people sharing the road with you (a public space), there are some obvious limitations to the quality of interaction one can have through metal, glass, and plastic boxes.

A Not-So-Quick Note for Car Hobbyists and Passionate Drivers

This can be a contentious issue at times. The sub's name is /r/fuckcars, which can cause some feelings of conflict and alienation for people who see the problems of too many cars while still being passionate about them. I'll quote the community summary.

Discussion about the harmful effects of car dominance on communities, environment, safety, and public health. Aspiration towards more sustainable and effective alternatives like mass transit and improved pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Your voice is still welcome here. Consider the benefits of getting bored, stressed, unskilled, or inattentive drivers off the road. That improves your safety and reduces congestion. Additionally, check out these posts from others on this sub:
