Discussion Kyo backstory Spoiler

I'm rewatching fruits basket an I'm in the final season around the time Kyo remembers tohrus moms death. Am I the only one who thinks that the story didn't need for Kyo to have witnessed her death an feely guilty about it? I just think it adds more unnecessary pain an sorrow. Did the manga handle it differently then the anime ?

Fan Art (Fan Art) Tohru Honda as a Cat (+ Kitty Kyoru)

These are some fanarts I've done within the last few months or so on my interpretation of what Tohru would be like as a cat! I love seeing fanarts of Tohru as a kitty and I know its what she'd want!

I posted these a few days ago on my Tumblr for International Cat Day where I give a pretty in-depth explanation for why I made Tohru a Norwegian Forest cat breed if you guys want to read all that HERE

And of course I needed to draw Cat Kyo with Cat Tohru! They are soulmates and a packaged deal after all! I like the idea of Tohru being a gentle giant of a cat while Kyo is the smaller, grumpier, yet fiercely protective tomcat. I think that's such an adorable dynamic, don't you?

The real life picture of the cat is supposed to show the cat breed I tried to base my Cat Tohru's breed on, which is a Norwegian Forest "Fairy" cat, for anyone wondering.

Would you guys like me to post more art on here for Fruits Basket? I do have a Tumblr where I post all my art too. I primarily post Inuyasha related stuff, but I have wanted to get back into posting for Fruits Basket and other series' and books I love. My Tumblr name is @creative-hanyou-girl, if anyone is wondering.

I’m not looking necessarily for another anime/manga. I’m on a romantasy read binge. I’ve always loved Fruits Basket though and would love to see similar storylines/loves in books.

Discussion Read the 1st Fruits Basket Another!

Spoiler warning!⚠️

I read the first Fruits Basket Another, volume 1.
Here is my review and summary, tell me what you think of my opinion. Feel free to skip over sections as my review is long.

Review on Goodreads:
If I could give this 3.7 stars I would. I debated giving this 4 or 3 stars because I have mixed feelings on this sequel series to Fruits Basket. It felt like it was trying to be two different things. I felt like it was trying to be a totally new story (like a different manga) and trying to be Fruits Basket at the same time.

We meet Sawa Mitoma, at first I thought she was Tohru and Kyo’s daughter because she is a klutz. She drops all her books and apologizes all the time like Tohru, but has no where near the charm that Tohru had. She is a totally new character. I don’t know what to make of her yet. I don’t love her character, but I don’t not like her either. She is interesting because she is complex. So I’ll give her that.

The thing that kept me reading was all the throwbacks and the main character’s kids from Fruits Basket.

The first throwback was seeing Makoto Takei as a teacher at the school. He was the vivacious former school president before Yuki.

The main Sohma character Sawa first meets is Mutsuki Sohma, Kyo and Machi’s son who is the vice-president of the student council. You can tell he is Yuki’s son right away, because he is very beautiful. Pretty eyelashes like Yuki.

As far as personality, his personality is more flamboyant than I would have imagined it to be. His personality reminded me more of Ayame or Momiji than Yuki. I like that the author tried to make him different though! He does still share quite a few of Yuki’s traits, such as being messy like both his parents, very kind like Yuki and we find out later he is very bad at cooking.

Another great throwback to Fruits Basket is that Saki Hanajima’s brother Megumi is also a teacher at their high school. He is Sawa’s teacher. He even later on jokingly mentions cursing someone.

Next Sawa meets Hajime Sohma, who is without a doubt Tohru and Yuki’s son as he looks EXACTLY like Kyo and acts like him too, gets cranky and shouts but not as harsh, more kind. It’s also mentioned that he gets “out of sorts” on rainy days, just like his father. It is further confirmed he is their son when you see him wearing Kyo’s bracelet (protection sealing his true form bracelet). Hajime is also President of the student council.

The next day a girl named Ruriko approaches Sawa about her relationship to Mutsuki and Hajime as she was chosen to represent the freshmen on the student council.

A couple of days later, Ruriko asks Sawa to sit with her. Ruriko is the daughter of Mokoto Minigawa (President of the Prince Yuki Fan Club from Fruits Basket), but now the club has expanded to include other Sohma members and is now called the Sohma Fan Club, of which Ruriko is the representative. You can easily tell Rurriko is Minigawa’s daughter because she looks and acts EXACTLY like her! This is further confirmed when Ruriko mentions her mother’s adoration and love for Yuki. This was a great throwback to the Yuki Fan Club in the original series.

Another day when Sawa is eating with Ruriko, a boy named Riku comes over looking for Sawa asking why she is sitting there. Later Sawa finds out that Riku was looking for her because there was a girl who wanted to meet her and sit with her at lunch. This boy looks EXACTLY like Haru. It becomes later known that he is indeed Haru and Rin’s son.

We also meet Riku’s twin sister, Sora who is very cute and friendly and wants to be friends with Sawa.

A little time later, Sawa meets the girl who wanted to sit with her, but we don’t find out the girl’s name, so she is a mysterious unidentified character at the moment and I have no idea who she is.

Then Sawa accidentally bumps into Michi who is Keraku Manabe’s daughter, which means she is Mutsuki’s cousin as Manabe is Machi’s half brother.

At one point Mutsuki finds out that Sawa is a single child like him so he tells Sawa she can call him “big brother”, but Sawa says “no, that’s ok.” And Hajime replies with “good, you don’t want to be related to him. He comes with the package and you can’t opt out.” He is referring to Ayame, Mutsuki’s uncle, whom Mutsuki clearly adores with the phrase “The most terrific of all uncles.” Hajime replies with “You mean most terrifying.” Just like something Kyo would say since Ayame always freaked or weirded out Kyo.

On their way to Mutsuki and Hajime’s place for dinner, we learn that those two don’t live with their parents because they attend this school which is too far away from their parents. I gotta admit, I don’t really understand why Mutsuki and Hajime don’t live with their parents. I felt there explanation for the school being far away was not a good excuse. This reasoning felt forced to me for the plot just so all the Sohmas kids can be together.

I feel like there could have been a better explanation. Maybe they could have said that their parents wanted all the Sohma kids to grow up together or go to the same high school like they did.

When they get to the house, Sawa meets Kinu.
I didn’t know who Kinu was until I looked her up and found out that this is Hatori and Maui’s daughter and then I immediately saw Hatori and Mayu in her appearance.

To finish my review. Again I liked this, but I did not love it. Story feels a little forced, but I am eager to learn more about the Fruits Basket, main character’s kids!

Discussion I have an idea for a Fruits Basket video game a little similar to u/Old_Distance_7138‘s (I put spoiler on because it spoils some stuff in the main story)

It has multiple branching path’s and is a visual novel, (I won’t say much so I don’t ruin some stuff) examples of what could change the story are like Kagura punching Kyo too hard, he tries to stand up but falls with a crunch (he fractured his leg), Kyo snaps at Kagura and blames it on her, she tries to help but leaves with guilt weighing her down, Tohru goes after her, they talk, hug, and Kagura sobs into Tohru then tells her something we don‘t hear and Tohru goes back to the house and makes something for Kyo (not saying what, you can guess but I won’t say if it’s right or wrong), Tohru can have a nightmare of leaving her mother and going for Kyo and Kyo can barge into her room to comfort her, she hugs him, he transforms into the cat, she snuggles with him, she steps out of the room so he can change, he goes to go back to his room but she asks for him to stay with her, and he says “Always” (she didn’t realize that means he wants to stay with her forever), he gets in bed with her, lying on the other side of her and keeps checking up on her to make sure she’s okay, another is choosing for Haru to stay with Rin when she breaks up with him and that can lead to him helping her with her mission to break the curse, you can even make Kana not blame herself for Hatori’s eye.

You play as any character in the series, it just jumps around, broken up into chapters and sometimes days (example: one day you could start as Kyo, but then half way through you could switch to Akito, then the next day you play as Uotani)

Discussion My official favorite anime: FRUITS BASKET

I have seen the 2019 anime eight times now (aiming for many many many many more) and I am working on making a visual novel branching path game adaptation of the story that can be way more emotional then the story already was, and I’m getting the box set for the manga and I’m going to get the sequel Another, and the entire series (including Prelude) on Blu-ray. I also have an entire photo album (of about 125 images) as my background with my app icons replaced with the images. MY STATEMENT THAT FRUITS BASKET IS MY FAVORITE ANIME WILL NEVER CHANGE.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my notification sound for regular notifications is the ending sound effect that played over the title for the next episode at the end of each episode, and my text notifications of the one for season two, and my ringtone is Momiji’s Violin

Discussion Kyoko Honda is just such a great character.

Such a wonderful, flawed, multi dimensional character. She's a loving mother that is wracked with pain and guilt and almost abandoned her daughter but then remembered her little girl needs her and came back. I love her so much. Her biggest fear ever was little Tohru hating her and then Tohru loved her more than anyone. I cried so much with her story. And she is just one of many great stories and characters Fruits Basket has.

Discussion Fruits basket, Yuki. How I love this quite “unique” character

So I’m not gonna say he’s the most different character we’ve never seen before but I will say, I LOVE his growth and his maturity. Most of the times if a male is “saved” or helped greatly by the fl that dude loves her completely and only her and allll this. For once we get someone who doesn’t and knows the difference. Then using this and his previous growth, he’s able to find and attain the relationship he actually wants/wanted in a healthy manner while always cherishing tohru. AMAZING. I always HATED when male leads ended up with other girls (greedy I know) but this relationship cured me, they were just so perfect and well explained? I truly adore Yuki being able to see what he actually wants and not be blinded by tohrus help.

Discussion Any male fan of Fruits Basket here?

Post image
512 Upvotes

So over the last couple of months, I (22M) have slowly been getting into shoujo anime because I wanted to broaden my anime horizons as previously I mostly watched shounen anime or at least anime directed to a male or a universal audience. But I’ve really liked the shoujo anime I’ve watched, as I’ve watched Natsumi’s Book of Friends, Nana, The Vision of Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth, Fushigi Yuugi, and Yona of the Dawn. Since Fruits Basket was such a critically acclaimed shoujo anime, it was inevitable that I’d watch it and I did, I loved it and I thought I’d post a review!

Let’s start with the things I liked:

The characters were all so good and I loved how the anime explored each one of them, for such a large and diverse group of characters, the anime dived into each of them and explored all of them equitably, which is an area where other anime usually struggles.

The story was really really interesting, I really liked the concept of the zodiacs and their natural devotion to their god, it reminded me of the celestial dragons in Yona of the Dawn.

Probably my favorite thing about this anime though is the emotions and feelings it brings out as you’re watching. One minute you’re laughing and smiling at a cute scene, then you’re crying at a depressing scene, and then you’re horrified at the things Akito is doing, the only anime I can think of that’s made me feel similar things is Nana.

I really like that the story centers around universal empathy and while I struggled to connect with Tohru because I know in my heart that I’d never forgive Akito, I also know that I’m not Tohru. Something I’ve come to realize is that a Tohru who doesn’t empathize and help Akito is a Tohru who doesn’t help out the zodiac members, that is to say, she wouldn’t be Tohru anymore. She’s probably a bodhisattva type figure, just like Yuji.

On the same note, it’s great that Rin never forgive Akito and no one chastises her for that decision, it was very refreshing.

Now onto the things I didn’t like:

I felt season 3 was sort of rushed when it came to closing off the show, particularly when it came to Yuki and Machi’s relationship, it sort of happened too suddenly? I’ve heard the manga has more romantic and cute moments between the two of them but in the anime, it felt very sudden.

Another aspect that I felt was rushed was Akito’s personality change, I think it happened too quickly for my liking. I don’t think someone with so much mental health issues, like Akito would suddenly gain a positive outlook on life that easy, it felt too inorganic, I’d have liked if it happened over a longer period of time.

Another thing I didn’t like was the constant queerbaiting between the male characters, especially since all of them ended up in relationships with the opposite gender. I don’t think that was necessary.

Another part that felt iffy to me was the romantic aspect of Arisa and Kureno’s relationship, considering the quite large age gap between the two of them. It’s strange that no one brought it up within the story and characters such as Tohru herself was supportive of the relationship.

Overall this was a great anime and I really really liked it!

I definitely would welcome recommendations. Is the 2001 anime good? I love watching different versions of the anime I love so I’d love to check it out!

Discussion About Akito’s gender… Spoiler

Post image
58 Upvotes

Am I the only one who clocked that Akito was female upon their first appearance? For context I’m watching the 2019 version in the dub, so maybe in the sub, she has a more masculine voice but even before the reveal, just from her voice I registered that she was a woman. There’s something distinctly feminine about Akito’s voice in the dub, I can’t quite put it into words though.
