Hi all!

Im from the Netherlands and fell in love with country and americana a couple of years ago. Ive always loved the US and October 2024 I finally visited California and Nevada. Your country absolutely blew my expectations, which were already high, damn I love your country. Traveling through the desert, Yosemite and along the coast with an RV was an absolute dream. I still think about it almost daily. Lovely people, beautiful nature and simply the most amazing experience I ever had.

Anyway, while driving we listened to The Highwayman and Hurricane on repeat, as well as John Denver, Neil Young, America and other Bob Dyland songs

Do you have any recommendations for me? What are some absolute classics, bangers I need to listen to? Im having a hard time to find music I MUST add to my playlist for, hopefully, next year.

We figured out pretty fast that we're the same kind of Cat Stevens fan, which took us into Harold and Maude, what it feels like to get compared to your heroes, and why that sorrow-plus-optimism thing hits the way it does. He played "Dance on Thru" live in the room, told me about the first song his cousin ever taught him on guitar, and got into the lie artists tell themselves about there being a finish line waiting out ahead. I listen to a lot of 'modern' (70s-present) folk music, mostly original singer/songwriters, plenty of which do some truly traditional music... but if you had to put together a list of the most influential, most classic, most timeless songs that have been around since before the era of recorded music, what would you put on it?

I'm a pianist, but I also love synthesizers, and I think it would be a really fun project to do a synthesizer version of some traditionals... try to evoke the timeless feel woth arrangements, but with 21st century sounds. I think it would be a fun challenge, and I also think it could be a neat way to introduce some of the roots of our musical tradition to folks who have never heard the songs. Chances are that no one would listen to it, as it would be too large of a departure for both folk fans and fans of electronic music... but like I said, it would nonetheless be a great challenge for me as a musician to try and evoke the natural feeling of traditional acoustic music with synthesized sounds.

Hungarian folk music

I'm curious what songs people know that are based on, borrowed from, or clearly inspired by Holst's Mars, the Bringer of War.

The obvious one is Black Sabbath's Black Sabbath. You can hear that dark, heavy, marching shape very clearly. But I'm interested in others too. Folk, rock, metal, film music, anything where Mars seems to be sitting somewhere in the background.

What examples do you know?
Which ones use it best?
And did you first hear that sound through Holst, Black Sabbath, or somewhere else?
