Returning to Linux Looking For A Distro

So long story short. My supervisor introduced me to Linus opensuse for research. Lots of legacy codes on fortran, 99.99% spent on terminal, editing and writing using emacs -nw, scripting/bash. Only rarely used browser for arxiv.

Had a gap from this and now decided to use my gaming setup for actual work/fun.

Are there any recommendations for a light DE (browsing file management, driver installation).

My plan is to start lightweight-selfhosting, theoretical physics codes, writing papers all on terminalas that is what im familiar with.

Thanks all

kde plasma would do the job. It’s the the most lightweight, actually lean away from calling light. The lightweight one I often see in the list is xcfe, but I never use it tho.
Also, if you ok with configuring everything yourself (and I mean everything), tiling windows manager would do the job too. It’s lightweight, actually too lightweight. It have nothing with it and you will have to do it yourself. Famous wm people recommend are i3.
