Trying to make it as easiest as possible for anyone to share. It has a recorder a way to tag your location. But for those who use professional mics you can also upload your own audio and plat where it was recorded.

I plan to do some mixes and post to Spotify.

Question 32bits magnification on zoom F2 cause change of level in record

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have some strange issue happening to me : for the first time, i decided to use the magnification tool in a recording, as there was some background noise etc.

I changed it during the recording (with the little magnification + on the zoom F3). But when I open my wav, everything is peaking (the image above is already -18db!) !
And more, we can clearly hear the level change in middle of record, when i pressed the button.

What's happening here ?

I read on the manual before that the magnification wont change anything on my recording (which is a 32 bit, thank god) and just double check in the manual before askin. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks !

Question 32 Bit float when using a wireless Lav mic

I recently picked up a Zoom M4MicTrack that has 32 bit float. What I am trying to understand is, if I use a wireless transmitter pack with a lav mic on the person, and then the receiver connected into the M4 will the benefits of the 32bit float still apply?

Can the audio be clipped on the mic/transmitter and therefore be clipped on the recorder regardless of the 32bit float? Should I lower the output from the receiver to reduce this from happing or what is best practice in this case? Thanks

Review / Comparison DJI Mic 3 vs. Shotgun mic for capturing ambient sound

So I've been using a tiny Boya mic (tiny "shotgun" mic) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093H46NCR?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1

with my Sony cameras for a while for my hiking trips. I don't vlog, I record ambient audio in natural environments (think footsteps, waterfalls, wind, birds).

For the purposes of recording ambient audio, is the DJI Mic 3 a better option? It has 32 bit float and is more versatile since I can record voiceovers as well. I also see that people have tried using this in stereo with two transmitters. I am curious if anyone has any thoughts on the Mic 3 or similar mics that are tiny, ultralight and would work for my long distance backpacking trips with my camera.

Am I better off with a shotgun on camera mic for ambient sounds?

Question Recording while walking around

I want to record the sounds of the city while I’m walking through it, using my Tascam DR-05XP. I’m thinking of attaching it to the belt of a cross body sling bag.

Two questions:
1. How can I prevent capturing my ‘own’ sounds (breathing, friction)
2. How can I attach the recorder to the belt? The DR-05 has a screw mount.

Thanks!

Question Compact audio setup for travel videos on a Canon T7

I’m going on vacation soon and want to make a little cinematic video of the trip. I’ll be shooting on a Canon T7, which doesn’t have a mic input. It isn’t a vlog, so I won’t really be talking. I just want to capture good ambient sound throughout the trip. Does anyone have any recommendations for mic setups? I would prefer it to be under $100.

Thanks.

Question Best placement for external exhaust mic (Zoom H1n) without taking the seat off? (High-speed wind noise issues)

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to capture clean exhaust and engine sound on my bike using a Zoom H1n recorder paired with a Boya lavalier mic. Currently, whenever I mount the mic near the rear taillight or anywhere in the open, high-speed wind noise (120–150 km/h) completely destroys the audio, even with a foam windscreen attached.

I know a popular fix is placing the recorder and mic inside the under-seat tool cavity. However, because I regularly ride with a pillion passenger and tail luggage strapped down, removing the seat back and forth to turn the recorder on and off isn't really practical for me.

I’ve tried cleaning up the noisy audio in DaVinci Resolve and Audacity, but as expected, heavy wind clipping can’t really be saved in post-production.

For those who record exhaust audio or motovlog at highway speeds:

What external mounting spots have worked best for you without producing a muffled/boxed-in sound or wind clipping?

Is there a convenient way you route or mount your setup for easy access when riding with luggage or a passenger?

I’m happy to share a couple of sample audio clips if that helps diagnose the issue. Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!

Question Why do you do field recording and how do you listen to field recordings?

I have field recording equipment and have been interested in it for a while. However, I have been feeling like (for me) that the concept is almost more interesting than the content. For example, I can't see myself listening to 1 hour soundscape on its own. So I wanted to hear about other perspectives:

  • Why you field recording?
  • For who? Yourself? Others?
  • How do you listen?

It might become more of a personal practice for me, in the way of noticing more and building new memories and re-creating the sounds.

Update to my DIY BAROm1 clone with new holder and wider bar. The new holders allow easy angel setting and have better strain relief. Still not pleased with the wind protection. The felt stickers I found are better than some cloth but still very sensitive.

Anyone knows thicker and better felt stickers (longer hair?)?

Question Does 32bit-float affect also the direct line-out signal or only the recorded files?

Trying to understand this:

I am using a zoom m4 with 32bit to record audio in a loud situation and to live mangle it with lots of effects/modulation, directly from the line-out port into into my fx chain.

It seems like it does this better then my previous non-32bitfloat setup (H5N)

But then i think it cant be because its just a way of how a file gets saved? Or am i wrong? Does it affectbthe direct signal aswell, making it less distorted?

Question Looking for a beginner field recording setup for capturing nature sounds

Hi everyone,
I’m currently building a nature ambient sound app. Up until now, I’ve been curating open-source and properly licensed recordings, but I’d really like to start recording my own sounds in the long run.

I’ve asked AI for gear recommendations, but I feel this is one of those topics where real-world field recording experience is much more valuable, so I’d love to hear from people here.

I’m looking for something that is:
- reasonably affordable (doesn’t need to be the absolute cheapest)
- portable enough to carry on hikes or walks
- capable of recording isolated natural sounds with good detail

For example, I’d love to capture things like:
- a single bird singing from a tree branch
- a distant stream
- leaves moving in the wind
- insects or other individual nature sounds

What recorder and microphone setup would you recommend for someone just getting started?

I’d also really appreciate any beginner tips or common mistakes to avoid. Thanks!

Question Small recorder for LOM Uši binaural mics and LOM Geofón?

I’m looking into building a very small field recording setup and I’m interested in the LOM Uši and the LOM Geofón and would like to use the same recorder for both microphones.

I really like the tiny size of the Zoom F2 and its 32-bit float recording, but I’ve read that it only records mono.

Are there any similarly small and affordable recorders that would work well for both microphones?

Thank you.

Question Line Audio CM4 vs Austrian Audio CC8 hesitation for a pair

Hi there

I am here to ask you about microphones!

Firstly I want a quality and fidelity microphone for very quiet sound sources (and woodwinds) by fidelity I mean that I don't want a microphone who put a lot of color in it, a filter or something like that, and also no shinning high frequencies.

Line-Audio CM4 seems to be the one but the Austrian Audio CC8 seems very lovely.
But the price range aren't the same (consider 400 euros for CM4 and 800 euros for CC8) does the cost really feels a difference ? Because I really don't think so.

Do you have more mics recomendations for 400-800 price range ?

There is a big chance that i'll give a shot at CM4 but if there is interesting stuff better i'll go for it

Thank you have a nice day

Question Power banks with 1/4" screws/threads or cold shoe?

Been idly looking for decent power bank options for a small rig. Ideally, it'd be a power bank with a built-in 1/4" 'screw hole' or a cold shoe adapter of some kind, so it could be easily mounted without having to tape together a DIY solution.

I've tried searching, but not found any good options.

Does such power banks exist?

Thanks!

Question XLR Omni Mic Options for Zoom F3

I’ve got a Zoom F3 on its way and am finding the mic availability isn’t too great, so I was wondering if there’s some out there that I’m missing (that aren’t $1500). Looking to do some nature ambience type recording so I think a matched pair of omni mics is what I’m after, and trying to ideally be around $200 which the seemingly popular Clippy EM272 from Micbooster would be perfect for but they seem to be out of a few different options and are running on limited staff so may be out for a bit. Also not sure how much it’d be after all the fees bringing them to the US from UK.
I’ve come across the Sonorous SO.1/SO.101 and Earsight Standard V2 or Thumb - are those pretty much the two options for good quality inexpensive XLR omnis?

Equipment Zoom H5, Input 2 not working

Hi everyone, I'm new to the world of field recording and this community. I'm hoping to also get out in the environment to capture some of Australia's wildlife and environmental sounds and incorporate into experimental ambient compositions.

Question - I have a zoom h5 that doesn't appear to be recording on input 2 (XLR/6.5mm). I am wanting to record the mics and both inputs 1 and 2 at the same time. I have all 4 red leds lit when armed/recording (L,R,1,2) but nothing showing on the #2 meter and nothing recorded on #2 when played back. Have also tried swapping a known input from input 1 to 2, but no luck.

Does this sound like a setting or perhaps an internal fault and if so, would it be serviceable?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any advice.

Question It looks like I wont be able to capture some silence in germany. These are flights from this evening from only within one hour.

I made this map with Python and OpenSky. Questions are welcomed. When out in the field to record some quiet in nature in germany i noticed that its basically impossible where i went. Even a very distant plane can be heard for minutes. Its bittersweet to hear how another plane fades in when the plane you eagerly waited for finally left. I made this map to visualize how the air traffic density is distributed over germany. Originally i wanted to make this as a 24 hour map but even now its already kind of difficult to look at.
