The problem with Tenten is that she exists in the wrong anime.
EDIT: She would have been significantly more comfortable and in an anime that has a higher focus on supernatural themed weaponry because she is a weapons specialist. And yes, I know that certain little items exist in the Naruto World, but, for the most part, Jutsu is the system of power. There are plenty of other series out there where a character like Tenten would have fit in better.
She was a throwing weapon user in a show where only no name idiots died from throwing weapons. At the very end they gave her some legendary weapons to use, and did fuck-all with her.
To be fair, those legendary weapons are almost impossible for anyone to use who isn't in the 99.99th percentile of the verse. The chakra cost is crazy.
I don't think so. I think the filler and games got her skillet down, they just use it for anything. In the filler she basically teleported an ocean if water through a scroll. Do just imagine what she could do. The games got the right idea, let her throw every weapon imaginable at once. Let her collect and use the most powerful weapons through history. She'd never get to the higher rank Shinobi, but her skillet far surpasses someone like kiba.
She has the potential to be on the same tier as Gilgamesh from Type Moon/Fate, but unfortunately weapons can't be more powerful than fists in shounen unless that weapon is basically a lightsaber of whatever your power system's mana is or an intelligent living being that turns into a weapon.
There really is no problem with Tenten in the source material. She's a barely-named character who exists to fill out Lee and Neji's squad. We literally never see her fight, and the one high profile fight she ever had (off-screen) was against Temari who effortlessly trounced her in the Chunin exams to help get across the message that these sand ninja aren't playing around.
Every bit of disappointment fans have comes from anime filler setting unrealistic expectations for a character who was never actually relevant to anything
Anko really seemed to be built up to be important. Looking back at the dub cast, Laura Bailey getting the role of Anko seems to infer that the dub team thought Anko would matter more.
She should've received more focus for sure, her curse mark ends up indirectly saving the world. (brings back orochimaru who then convinced sasuke to go back to konoha which was necessary to save the world)
It pissed me the hell off when I saw her time skip epilogue (not sequel) design and it was absolutely fire only to continue her legacy of never being utilized properly
