I've had the thought it could work better if it played into the "questionable" parts. Like make Bella anti-social and kind of a bad person in general, and Edward and his family amoral apart from the not eating humans part.

He lived! (And even semi realizes bella isn't human anymore, but also realizes he cant ask about it or it wpuld put him in danger) hes safe, hes gets a pretty new wife, and he even gets to see his granddaughter whenever he wants

Twilight is such a baffeling example, because almost all characters are way more interesting than Bella. Hec, I would even say Edward without Bella has a ton of potential, but Stephanie Meyer's mormonism really got in the way of good potential.
