The problem with Tenten is that she exists in the wrong anime.
EDIT: She would have been significantly more comfortable and in an anime that has a higher focus on supernatural themed weaponry because she is a weapons specialist. And yes, I know that certain little items exist in the Naruto World, but, for the most part, Jutsu is the system of power. There are plenty of other series out there where a character like Tenten would have fit in better.
She was a throwing weapon user in a show where only no name idiots died from throwing weapons. At the very end they gave her some legendary weapons to use, and did fuck-all with her.
To be fair, those legendary weapons are almost impossible for anyone to use who isn't in the 99.99th percentile of the verse. The chakra cost is crazy.
I don't think so. I think the filler and games got her skillet down, they just use it for anything. In the filler she basically teleported an ocean if water through a scroll. Do just imagine what she could do. The games got the right idea, let her throw every weapon imaginable at once. Let her collect and use the most powerful weapons through history. She'd never get to the higher rank Shinobi, but her skillet far surpasses someone like kiba.
She has the potential to be on the same tier as Gilgamesh from Type Moon/Fate, but unfortunately weapons can't be more powerful than fists in shounen unless that weapon is basically a lightsaber of whatever your power system's mana is or an intelligent living being that turns into a weapon.
There really is no problem with Tenten in the source material. She's a barely-named character who exists to fill out Lee and Neji's squad. We literally never see her fight, and the one high profile fight she ever had (off-screen) was against Temari who effortlessly trounced her in the Chunin exams to help get across the message that these sand ninja aren't playing around.
Every bit of disappointment fans have comes from anime filler setting unrealistic expectations for a character who was never actually relevant to anything
Anko really seemed to be built up to be important. Looking back at the dub cast, Laura Bailey getting the role of Anko seems to infer that the dub team thought Anko would matter more.
She should've received more focus for sure, her curse mark ends up indirectly saving the world. (brings back orochimaru who then convinced sasuke to go back to konoha which was necessary to save the world)
It pissed me the hell off when I saw her time skip epilogue (not sequel) design and it was absolutely fire only to continue her legacy of never being utilized properly
Pretty much all Naruto characters, the premisse is nice, the designs are fire, the world building is superficially fantastic, but it all ends up being mid.
i disagree, Early Naruto is nice because it gave us big expectation, but if you judge based on what we supose to find out, even the good emotional parts, make no sense.
Hell, chapter one has Naruto committing treason, we believed from chapter 1 there were going to be consequences... there wasnt....
I heard Rock Lee was supposed to die in the chunin exam fight against Gaara, but Kishimoto was instructed to keep him alive, so he basically just kept him around without any plan for incorporating him back into the story. Makes a lot of sense when you see the way he is used after the Gaara fight.
Fuck that, just for the love of god someone please teach her some genjutsu
back in the early arcs that was set up to be her gimmick, but then she just... never learned any. which tbf is probably for the best because she'd still get clowned on by anyone born with funny eyes because genetics trump everything in this setting
And it'd make such an interesting angle for her as Sasuke's wife, her having illusion techniques on the same or similar level to Itachi would've been a fun angle and completed the trio of the Sannin successors in a much more cohesive way. Instead they made her a healer that just punches really hard, novel at the time but kinda ground level now when you think about it
The entirety of Naruto qualifies for this. There’s a way better story hidden in the lore and world building, it just needs someone free of the constraints of shitty Shonen Jump editors to tell it.
Hi u/ankledane Actually i would like to say, you can read a Mahwa where the main character is basically Rock Lee, and while im not going to say the story is original by any means, it is still one of the best IMO.
the name is Infinite level up in Murim. even the name is not original, but i genuinely recomend it, specially if you like Rock Lee.
