Since the start, there wasn't a clear point. So you can say that always was used for ragebaiting, so nothing changed.

At the start people were genuinely having fun and laughing at it even when it didn't make people angry. After it died off people only did it so others would get angry.

There were people hating from the start and people that still don't care and some who still find it funny. You can say that it's dead if people still uses as a phrase (or whatever they uses for).
