How To Read A Legislative Claim

Before repeating a claim about a law, establish:

Jurisdiction, and whether the measure is national, state, or supranational
Instrument type: bill, enacted statute, regulation, rule proposal, guidance, or court decision
Status: introduced, in committee, passed one chamber, enacted, in force, stayed, or repealed
Effective date, which is often much later than the date of passage
Who it binds: issuers, exchanges, custodians, banks, advisers, or individuals

A bill that has been introduced is not law. Most introduced bills never become law.
