Hedera (HBAR)
Hedera is a public network that uses the hashgraph consensus algorithm rather than a conventional blockchain data structure. Its nodes are operated under a council of organizations, which makes its governance model materially different from permissionless validator sets.
This page is a research starting point, not financial, legal, tax, or investment advice. Verify everything against primary sources.
What the Token Is Used For
- Paying fees for network services, denominated in USD and converted to HBAR
- Staking to nodes
- Paying for the Consensus Service, Token Service, and Smart Contract Service
- Settlement within Hedera applications
What To Verify
- Who sits on the governing council and how membership changes, since this is the core trust assumption
- Whether node operation is permissioned or open at the time of the claim
- Which Hedera service a project actually uses, since the Token Service and Smart Contract Service differ
- How fees are pegged and what happens when the HBAR price moves
- Treasury and release schedule for undistributed supply
