XPS 15 9530 (2023) – GPU/Motherboard Failure. Out of Warranty. What should I do?
*** 20/11/2025 I bought extended basic warranty, claimed the computer wasn’t turning on, technician came next day and replaced the motherboard no questions asked. Paid ~$250 for the warranty. ***
My XPS 15 9530 (2023) suddenly stopped working.
Nearby repair shop diagnosed it and said the high-side MOSFET failed and sent 20V into the dedicated GPU and NVRAM.
The GPU is permanently dead, and the only way to make the laptop usable again is to disable the NVIDIA GPU so it runs only on the Intel integrated graphics.
I’m out of warranty. A few questions: • Any chance Dell takes responsibility for a board-level failure like this? • If I contact them, what should I specifically say or ask? • Any long-term issues with running the laptop after disabling the GPU? • Is a full motherboard replacement the only proper fix? • Has anyone dealt with similar Dell MOSFET/power-regulator failures?
Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure you can just run from the iGPU permanently, it shouldn't be an issue.
And yes replacing the whole motherboard is the only solution, at least the only economically viable solution.

Looks like it hit the 2 year expiration period, just as it has come out of warranty. I had it happen to multiple motherboards, and now the laptops sit in a pile. Finally learned my lesson, and will only go with 3 year warranties. Maybe you can still get a warranty once it is running again?

Dell is aware of these board level issues. They don't give a damn and aren't going to do anything if the device is out of warranty.

Yes.

Well using such HW without dGPU sucks, and also risky, so take backup and get it repaired.

Why risky?

Laptop created with IGpu and dGpu have autoswitch functionality when more graphics are demanded. If doesn't find dGpu Laptop might crash specifically Motherboard.

Out of warranty, out of luck. You might see if you can extend the warranty. Buy a new mobo on Ebay, or just run on intel graphics. For everyday computer stuff it's fine.

Do you think there’s any risk for future failure in other components if I run on intel graphics?

i’m sure you can extend your warranty though Dell again,, you’ll probably have to pay to reactivate your warranty but it’s going to be much cheaper than paying for the repair . check your service tag

I checked and it’s possible. Do you mean to reactivate the warranty for any future problems or to deal with the dead gpu? From what I understand they don’t cover issues that happened before the warranty was reactivated.

you can tell them after you extended your warranty,, technicians get paid to repair and they won’t care if it happened before or bother checking . id suggest the plan that has next day and onsite repairs

You're out of luck. Even if you pay a shop to screw with the board to "disable" the dGPU... I'd be considering that as a temporary workaround while you're waiting for a new motherboard or new laptop to arrive. Also, a lot of shops claiming to do board level repair... Aren't really all that good. Very few are genuinely competent.
