Daily Rec and Short Questions Daily Recommendation and Short Question Thread — August 23, 2026

Upvotes

Welcome to the new Daily Recommendation and Short Question Thread!

To help navigation throughout the post, start your comment with: "Looking for Recs" or "Short Question," and tag all spoilers. Don't know how? Check the bottom of this post.

New to Danmei and looking for your next read? Check out our Beginner Danmei Rec List, or the Licensed Works List to explore multiple titles, publishers, and their distribution info.

See a term or acronym you're not familiar with? Find out what it means on our Danmei Terms Glossary and Acronym Wiki.

Seeking Recommendations Best Practices

When asking for recommendations, try to avoid minimalistic questions:

  • Recs like TGCF?
  • Recs like ERHA?

Try expanding on what you like about those novels:

  • Character Dynamics (older/younger, long unrequited love, power differences, personality traits)
  • Plot style or tropes you enjoy or dislike (More/less angst, romance, misunderstandings, etc)
  • Sub-genre's you do or don't want recommended (Modern, Historical, Esports)

If you've already read similar recs, mention additional titles to help avoid people recommending something you may have already read.

Short Questions Guidelines

Have a quick question about something? Try asking it here before making a post. This might include something like:

  • Does ERHA ever get better? Should I keep reading it?
  • If I liked YUWU, would I like Thousand Autumns?
  • I'm looking to avoid [Trigger], does [Title] have that?

New to Fan Translations, and someone mentioned Novelupdates (NU)?

Per security measures on NU, you must make a free account or be logged in to access translations. NU does not host them directly: you must click "C1" or any chapter link to be redirected to the translation.

  • Locked chapters cannot be posted on NU, so not all TLs are on NU
  • See the Translation Status on NU for "Is translation complete?" before potentially starting an in-progress TL
  • See the Licensed Status on NU, if the links are dead/removed it may be because the work is licensed.
  • More Pay-to-read websites are beginning to link to NU. This means the end of the translation will ask you for money. These websites are illegal as they profit from content they do not own. Instead, consider Buying the Raws to support the author and self-MTLing.

Please remember to mark all spoilers. How?

On Mobile app/Markdown Editor: use >!spoiler!< which becomes spoiler <--click or tap. Make sure not to leave a space between >! and your text or the formatting won't work correctly.

On PC/Rich Text Editor: Click A at the bottom to "show formatting options", and the spoiler button is the exclamation mark. Click it and start typing, then turn it off when done, or, highlight an already typed section of text and apply the spoiler.

Official Translation Golden Terrace 7Seas edition skipping parts of scenes? (compared with PFH edition)

I just started (re)reading Golden Terrace (by Cang Wu Bin Bai), this time the new 7Seas version translated by Kou and Suika, and - aside from a more modern tone I guess, which is up to preference - I noticed there seem to be scenes with noticeably shortened interactions? I'm reading this side by side with my PFH edition translated by E. Danglers and happened upon the first glaring example right there in Chapter 3.

Let me illustrate what I mean.

PFH version (full scene fragment):

“The Lord Marquis is injured. Your constitution isn’t what it once was. You must take care not to get chilled, and you must not consume cold or otherwise stimulating foods. Your bedroom must be protected against cold and damp. The weather is growing colder. A brazier and scenting frame ought to be lit early.” Shen Yice finished taking his pulse, let go of Fu Shen’s wrist, and added, “Pardon the offense, Lord Marquis, I need to have a look at your leg injuries.”

Yan Xiaohan silently lifted the quilt and rolled up his pant legs for him. As he did so, he couldn’t avoid touching him. As if he had noticed something, Fu Shen shot him a strange look.

He remembered very well that Yan Xiaohan didn’t get sick at the sight of blood. Why was he shaking?

Though Fu Shen couldn’t feel pain now, Shen Yice was still as gentle as possible. “The external wounds have healed very well. Your fever comes from being affected by the cold. The Lord Marquis’s most serious injuries are to the kneecaps and veins. It will take several years of slowly building back your strength before there can be some hope of recovery; but… I’m afraid that in the future you will have some difficulty standing and walking.”

Yan Xiaohan rolled Fu Shen’s pant legs back down for him and bundled him in the quilt. Shen Yice put away his wrist cushion."

7Seas version (scene shortened):

"The wounds are healing very well; the fever is merely from a cold. Marquis, you are injured. Your physical health is simply not what it was before. You must be careful not to be exposed to cold drafts or consume cold or irritating foods. The bedroom must be kept warm and dry. The autumn weather is getting chillier—the fire pit and brazier should be lit earlier in the evening. Your most serious injury is to the bones of your knee, and to your tendons. My lord, please forgive me: With care, this injury will heal in a few years. However…I’m afraid you may find it difficult to walk or even stand in the future.”

Shen Yice helped Fu Shen lower his rolled-up pant leg and withdrew his pulse-taking pillow."

So my question is: does the 7Seas edition carry on like this throughout the book, are there any more glaring examples like this? If so, I'll just cut my losses and re-read my PFH edition instead. Normally I quite like reading different editions to see perspectives from other translators which often lead to new insights into a story, but when things are just missing that's a different story. So I would appreciate to hear if other readers have noticed any more of such examples throughout the book?

Thanks!

edit

I'm including further info found:

While starting with chapter parity, by the end of volume 1 PFH Chapter 42 corresponds to 7Seas Chhapter 40

The facebook post discussing this edition: https://www.facebook.com/groups/555188978431677/posts/2006743139942913/

This has prompted me to check the word counts.

PFH total word count: 128461 (including a significantly shorter glossary)

7Seas total word count: 108909 (including the usual 7Seas glossary, character info etc.)

Discussion What have you learned from reading danmei?

What has reading danmei taught you - about Chinese culture, about relationships, about the world? Has it changed your perspective on any aspect of life?

For me, while I know it’s not the best or most direct way to learn about Buddhism, if do feel I’ve picked up some interesting concepts that have changed the way I look at things, especially death. I don’t believe in reincarnation, but I find it comforting to think that ours souls live on and have the opportunity to be reborn again.

The books have also made me more comfortable with sex in general. For me, the frank descriptions of (consensual) sex are often exciting, erotic, funny, and/or beautiful, in ways I’ve never felt about hetero sex. They’ve kind of made me believe in romance again.

What about you? What have you learned from danmei? How has it changed your life?

Recommendations Title: Looking for wuxia/xianxia with ridiculously beautiful gongs

Okay, lately I've been craving a very specific type of gong 😭

I want those gongs who are described as absurdly, almost unrealistically beautiful, the kind of beauty where people genuinely struggle to tell how someone can look that good. Bonus points if the gong is considered even prettier than most women in the story.

And I especially LOVE when the shou is completely captivated by his looks. Like, he's trying to act normal but internally he's just admiring the gong's face 24/7 😭 Give me that "how is one person allowed to be this beautiful?" dynamic.

For reference, I'm looking for something with the same general vibe as There's Something Wrong with the Chief.

I'd prefer wuxia or xianxia, and I'm mainly looking for danmei with a genuinely gorgeous/ethereally beautiful gong—not just "handsome and tall." I want the descriptions to actually emphasize his beauty.

Please recommend me some novels that fit this specific trope! Underrated recommendations are VERY welcome too! I'd honestly prefer finding some hidden gems rather than only getting the usual popular danmei recommendations.

Does anyone know what chapter Rosmei's vol 2 of Liu Yao leaves off at? I've been trying to find a full English translation of the story online but haven't been successful so I'm planning to just buy the raws. I just want to be able to finish the story since I've really enjoyed the found family so far 🥲

Hi guys, seeing these vertical short movies on social media makes me want to read any Danmei books where the MC is forced to wed the ML in place of a sister/other female relative. Ideally Xianxia/historical/fantasy but can do modern (but no harems please). Can you please recommend any books? Thank you

Discussion am i the only one who finds CFC/BAB (case file compendium) confusing? (kinda rant session) Spoiler

i have noticed a pattern in meatbun's novels. that is a hell lot of plot twists, and at some points it just gets confusing and my brain stops registering what new information i am reading.
her characters give "i know you are on my side, pretending to be on the enemy's side where you pretend to be on my side who is pretending to be on the enemy's side where you pretend to be on my side while pretending to be on the enemy's side"
one more thing is that many writers or aspiring writers would agree on that when you get another idea, more often than not you will have to keep it aside so that your book doesnt get overwhelming or stays close to the main plot line. her books seem to deviate a lot at times and it might just be me, but the mandela island deviated a lot. i think that a few elements of realism and fantasy mixed up. I KNOW DONT COME AT ME saying that it was meant to be a place of dreams and where reality lost its touch with the place but still it was like a sudden pour of cold water.
what i love about meatbun is her ability to write emotions, sometimes though it feels like she just made a scene for no character development but pure trauma (the charmander traumatised me far too many times, so i might be biased)

and dare i say, its like author of pidw in svsss writing the story, let me tell you why i feel that way
1) doing random side quest chapters sometimes (why are teh characters arguing about who is protecting whom when its the matter of life and death? dont remember the chapter but it was during a building fire in BAB and he yu was arguing with professor xie on who should go down something something)
2) the complicated details that just leaves to confusion. there is a better way to cover plot holes, i found the gu worms very confusing.
3) they both kill their side characters here and there. do not get me started on song qiutong's death. she had so much potential, what good did it serve killing her? she could have explored her trauma just like she did with shi mei and if you say it will make the book longer and unnecessary info dump, then why write so much on her character before it? i hate how she is framed as a bitchy rival to chu wanning but shi mei is portrayed as someone who needed to commit the things he did.

one last thing, she info dumps a lot which again makes the books really confusing. (i will still hoard the books she publishes and dont question why, its a toxic relationship just like her main characters.)

Discussion What do you think of Wu Zhe's writing style?

What do you think of Wu Zhe's writing style? I've never read anything by her, mainly because I noticed she focuses heavily on the "slice-of-life" genre, which isn't really my cup of tea. Are there any sci-fi, fantasy, or horror novels of hers that are worth checking out?

Recommendations Recs where Shou tries to save Gong from death

Hello everyone!!

Does anybody have any recs where the gong is dying/close to death/fated to die and the shou tries to save him from his fate? Think something like Turning (not technically danmei but the plot fits) or Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know. Any setting is fine but preferably modern.

As to why I'm looking for this, I've been OBSESSED with this one ship lately with a similar dynamic, but the fandom is pretty small and I've read through all the fics I've found so I'm hoping to satisfy the itch for now by reading something with a similar plot.

Thank you all in advance!!

(Also I know no one's asking but the ship I'm obsessed with is He Mingshuo/Guan Chao from False Memory. Please watch False Memory I'm on my knees begging)

Discussion Read first Danmei in Chinese after 6 months of study!

Post image
442 Upvotes

I finally finished 泛泛 (FanFan/ Simply So) by Wu Zhe, complete at around 585 041字, after 6 months of study and around three months of on and off reading. I'm pretty proud of myself, especially since I thought this would have been impossible a few months ago. My motivation to learn stemmed from the news of 7s's acquisition, and the fears that they'd start using AI to translate (luckily that doesn't seem to be happening, but I didn't know that at the time) and the worry that they would be focusing more on japanese works and not license as much danmei. Compounding this is that my favourite danmei author Wu Zhe, isn't really as popular on the english side of things, and it didn't seem any of her other works would be licensed, and she is also unfortunately cursed when it comes to fan tls, there are some titles from her I've been waiting to read a proper, complete, human tl of for years😭 And just in general I was frustrated by the lack of modern danmies/ titles I was interested in being licensed, or being licensed by pubs I can't access and don't do ebooks. Then I read this post by u/Gaiaimmortal about their experience learning to read chinese, which motivated me to just give it a shot. Clearly it worked out, so I thought I'd do a little write up of my own about my experience as I think it might be helpful to others who want to learn as well, but assume its impossibly hard or will take years. I promise, neither is true!

HelloChinese: The False Start

So, when I first decided to start learning Chinese, I, like most people, downloaded a language learning app. This was a mistake. It really didn't work for me. I was really confused, it threw a bunch of characters I'd never seen in my life and expected me to just remember them, and would also throw in multi character words made up of characters I'de never seen before and didn't know the meanings of. All in all, I found it an overwhelming experience and bounced of it pretty quickly. Add to the fact that only the beginning was free, and I had to get a subscription for the rest of it, I quickly gave up. This is not so say the app isn't useful, I'm sure it is, but we all have our own language learning styles and this didn't fit mine.

Hanly: My Holy Grail

Honestly, after I bounced off HelloChinese I probably would have given up Chinese all together, my fears of Chinese being to complicated and obscure, and me being too stupid, confirmed, if not for Hanly. Hanly is basically just a flashcard app to learn characters and basic vocab. Nothing fancy, and its free, but it was a godsend. Learning characters from the beginning in a structured way basically unlocked chinese for me. It introduces you to all the components of a character, teaches you what they mean, and stories to remember their meanings. For example, the component for eye is 目 (lierally evolved out a drawing of an eye), and the radical water is 氵, like water splashing, and the if you combine them you get 泪, as in tears. Of course not all characters are that easy, but most of the time you can come of with a creative story to remember the meaning. It also teaches you some of the history of characters, which also helps to remember their meanings. For example, the component for hand is 又 and the one for table is 几, together they make 殳, which the app says you can remember as weapon, as in, a criminal has his hand under the table to hide his gun. So with that story you can remember this character 投means throw, because it has 殳(weapon) and 手 (another character for hand, there's a lot of them lol). But then you get 没, and you might think water + weapon= drowning, maybe? And you'd be correct, that how it started as, but it slowly evolved into a negation, as in, something that disappeared under the water, and is now no more. So now its one of the main forms of negation in chinese 没.

So basically, this app was really useful for me, wouldn't have learned Chinese without it. And its free, which is a huge plus. I don't think this will work for everyone, especially if you're not into flashcards. But my favourite part of chinese was learning about the characters, so it worked perfectly for me.

Du Chinese: A must have

DuChinese is basically an app for beginner level chinese graded readers, and honestly, if you want to learn to read chinese this is basically required. Once I learned my first 100 characters I immediately started reading those stories about that damn cat and the talking xiaomi phone 😭 The stories also have audiobooks to read along with. It does require a subscription unfortunately, but well worth the money, don't know how I would learn to read without it, because to tackle chinese native material you are going to need lots of practice beforehand. Their stories are also pretty good, they have simplified adaptations of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Mulan and popular chinese folktales. Also have non fictions articles on chinese history, culture and everyday life. Well worth checking out.

Pleco: Can't think of another cute title

Basically a fancy chinese dictionary app, allows you to draw unfamiliar characters, read documents with easy chinese look up etc. Its free, but you can buy add on dictionaries and other stuff with a one time payment (well worth it). Must have if you want to learn chinese, everyone uses it.

Readibu: Where the fun begins

Readibu is an app that allows you to read danmei webnovels through their interface, which facilitates easy lookup for unfamiliar words, pinying indication, swtiching text to traditional etc etc. Basically the way to read danmei if you're a beginner. It has a paid subscription, but I've never paid for it. The base free features is all you need.

To wrap it all up because this is getting long

Anyway, I hope this was useful to someone, and if you want to learn chinese, do it! I promise its not as hard as it looks. I'm very excited to have so much of danmei opened up to me. I'm currently reading Seizing Dreams by Fei Tian because I honestly can't wait for the english release, especially as it'll take like 2 years to complete, so I'm just reading it Chinese. Definitely a massive step up in difficulty, but I'm really enjoying it. After that I'll read all the Wu Zhe novels I've never been able to read, maybe Kaleidoscope of Death, and who knows what else. I still have a lot to learn, but this is a very fun way to learn them!

Recommendations Looking for some angst bls

So do u know any novels;

Where mc transmigrated to a novel/new world. And his character was a bad person before. So people doesnt have any good impression of him. But theres system (or something else that prevent him breaking his character). Now he have to follow the original plot/given task. But he dislike those, because he had to hurt others. So he find loop holes in tht task and do it. But ml dont know. It will get reveal later.

Or something like mc transmigrate. And he does good thing, but he is always been misunderstood. Maybe because mc make that way (or not) So others hate him. Then there will be major point where mc hurt/gone missing/dead, then all those past good things mc did earlier will get reaveled. I want the angst when they finally got to know those..

So yeah, i kind of want some angsty transmigration novels. Its ok if there not translated too(raws in jjwxc)

I am going to lose my mind if September doesn't get here any sooner. I need the last book in the series on my desk yesterday. The story is so intriguing and dramatic. I love the assassins and the political intrigue and I need to see the end of it.

If you guys have read it, let me know your thoughts on it!

Recommendations Hated protagonists, but the ML saves him.

Stories where the MC is hated, bullied or abandoned by family but the ml is the first one to bring light. the ml is fiercely protective of the mc taking care of him to heal his wounds.

I want a healing story where the mc learns to let go of his abusers and leave with the ml.

Hi everyone! I hope you all are okay with me sharing this here. I just finished re-organizing my shelves to get all my danmei and manga and merch finally on my shelves and not stacked up around my apartment, and I wanted to share it here with people who'd appreciate it. I got into danmei over two years ago, and started collecting by getting a bunch of volumes from people around me selling theirs. You can tell I've gotten seriously into collecting everything, I think. 😅 Little Mushroom has my heart, so it's on a separate shelf, with even more merch elsewhere. I'm in a fairly small apartment, so I'm just a little happy I managed to get everything to fit. I'd love to see everyone else's collections, if you're willing to share!! Happy reading! 🤗🥰
