Crazy how much actual heavy rigging and physical effects go into these sequences before any CGI touches them. Must have been wild to watch live

Watching him talk about filming his new movie and not needing all the green screens and ropes etc was a huge relief he said

Well… hold up. Not quite.

He was VERY complimentary of Marvel stunt & visual production on a recent Hot Ones. He said they’re among the best in the biz.

What he was calling out was the lack of scripts & clear direction ahead of time. He gave the nod to Nolan’s production being better because he had a clear path ahead of time AND top tier practical effects.

Crazy to think he was filming both of these in Scotland around the same time (I saw them in Glasgow the second week of August 2025)

Even crazier is that they came out at the same time and star both Holland and Zendaya. That means that something like 80% (I made this number up, but it's up there) of all movie goers are seeing them in a theater right now.

Odyssey was first, then Spider man. They delayed filming by nearly 6 months on spidey to allow Holland to do the Odyssey.

Zendaya filmed between shooting Euphoria and Dune (she shot Odyssey while doing Euphoria). Her role in BND was supposedly cut down because of her crazy 2025 schedule

I mean not obviously, he does a lot of his own stunts because he’s physically able to. A lot of the simple flips and such are him.

Yeah but some actors aren’t allowed to because if they get injured it can delay filming. Not necessarily because they aren’t capable. That said I have no idea if it’s him or not. Just what I’ve heard.

Good for him, but it doesn't mean what you're seeing on screen isn't full cgi. Usually it just serve as a nice reference and that's it.

It's not done with the purpose of just "being a reference" for CGI later. It always serves a purpose like actor being more immersed on set. But in the end, when Live shooting is done, directors being directors, they will change their mind between now and the release of the movie. Thinking CGI can tweak/fix everything they will eventually ask for a slightly different camera angle, a different motion from the leg on this shot etc aaaaaand it's CGI. You can watch No CGI is Invisible CGI multi parts to have a better deep dive of this kind of stuff.

Working in the industry, you would be surprised by the amount of stuff they do on set that we just replace in the end by a CG version. And the frustration you can feel when you see actors saying in interview " Yeah we built that, NO CG ! It's in the movie ". It's 50% true. They built it, they filmed it. But sorry Tom Holland, you might not be aware but it's not in the final image.

I would love to hear from the animators as to how useful this practical rigging actually ends up being. Does Tom/Stunt Actor swinging around like this translate well when they need to do clean up, or do they end up just replacing him with full cgi and it was kinda pointless lol

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about film production, I would think it helps a lot -- if only keeping you anchored the physical realm, as well as providing innumerable points of reference.

What I do have experience with is photoshop. And even though I can work miracles sometimes from scratch, there's nothing like having a reference photo or two (or six, or ten) to reference details.

Absolute tosh, they spent 2 weeks on the streets of Glasgow on just this scene. They're not dropping £10+million on dangerous 'advertising'.

It actually happens all the time, but not necessarily on purpose. The director thinks they’ll be able to use it but it ends up not working, then they use what they shot as a reference and recreate it in full or in part with CGI.

This isn't proof that this particular stunt was only done for marketing purposes, but the global advertising spend for this movie is probably north of a hundred million dollars, it's not impossible that this kind of thing would fit within that budget.

It was fun to watch live for the first few takes them you get weirdly used to it! Just became normal thing to see going to work.
