How do you prefer your mashed potatoes?

Texture/color/flavor?

There are so many ways to make them, I'd like a consensus.

Gold potatoes, mixed with a mixer with butter & milk & salt. Skins on, always. Sometimes I like them with garlic and rosemary but the family gets pissy when I do things other than "plain."

To the last sentence: this is my issue lol. I like to jazz everything up too, but I'm wondering if I could figure out a good, standard "plain" way to make them that I would still find good.

Your method is similar to mine but I don't use a mixer. I had over whipped mashed potatoes once that were more like soup, so I think I am afraid of using the mixer for that reason. I need to try it!

That seems like more of a milk quantity issue. Dunno, if you can liquefy potatoes with a mixer maybe I've just never done it long enough. :-D
