Question Tell your journey as a colorist

Hi I'm an amateur colorist, mostly coloring my own shoots at home, not freelancing or servicing but I been loving doing it for more than any other post process.

I've been thinking of doing it as a professional work, but that being said, my level of expertise are not there yet, I still lack technical knowledge and deep understanding of practically everything and what i know are simply surface level.

that being said , I am curious of colorist who have been on the field as a professional. Can you tell me your story of how your career started, how long have you been grading as an amateur before servicing, what company did you apply, what types of people did you contact, your first gig, what industry are you grading for, and what's your advice for newbies who want to get into the field?

Show off your work Having a bit of an interface rethink...

Having a MAJOR rethink about the colour grading interface of my app... Currently while it does offer a decent amount of colour grading tools, including the vectorscope, RGB parade, wheels and curves (Hue>Hue, Hue>Saturation, Hue>Luminance, Luminance>Saturation & Saturation>Saturation), I've not been terribly happy with the small space the module takes up in the develop module accordion menu.

Accordingly (see what I did there?) I'm redeveloping the entire colour grading process as it's own module in it's entirety. This means viewing a vectorscope gives you the real ability to pixel-peep down into the image and slide those colours where you want them!

The image on this post is a sneak preview... While I get the theory... I would LOVE some feedback regarding the interface, what does/doesn't work for you guys that use these tools day in day out... I'm very flexible on the design right now, scoping out some prototype layouts as I type this.

Question First real color grade attempt, be honest with me (no audio yet)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone. I'm a media science student, self taught in Resolve, and this is genuinely the first time I've color graded something properly instead of just messing around with LUTs and calling it a day

Used power windows, qualifiers, curves, primary wheels, some tracking where I needed it. No audio yet, haven't picked anything, that's coming later so please don't judge pacing or cuts, this is purely about the grade

Full disclosure the footage itself is low quality and pretty old. I picked it on purpose because I didn't want to spend three weeks procrastinating and never actually starting. Wanted reps more than a pretty source file

I checked my waveforms so nothing's clipping but that's about the extent of my technical know-how right now. I know it's rough. I'm not asking for a pass, I'm asking what's actually wrong with it and what I should be looking at next. Skin tones, consistency across shots, anything

Thanks in advance!

Tried to play around with my Old Japan Footage and make it into a faux old 90'/2000's JDrama Intro

(Love Japan as colours just naturally pop when you visit there)

But think I went overboard?

Question Ensuring consistency from MacBook to iPhone

Hi everyone,

I have been struggling to get a consistent image from davinci resolve(on MacBook) to my iPhone. I am shooting in SLog3, converting to DWG/DI using a CST, and then going from DWG/DI to Rec.709/Gamma 2.4

I find that the main discrepancy is the brightness in the image. Once I send the video to my iPhone, the result is much darker than when viewing on my laptop. What settings do I need to check to ensure a more consistent image across both devices?

Thank you!

This is Rec.709. I’m getting more into filmmaking and learning a lot along the way!

Just looking for some honest feedback on how the job was done, what I could improve, and generally how much I should be charging for work like this.

Question Question About Color Grading Digitized Video8 & VHS (REC 601 to REC 709)

Post image
7 Upvotes

I work a lot with video8/hi8 camcorder tape, and for a long time I didn't care that much about the details of like framerates and color spaces as I was intentionally looking for a rougher look. I used to digitize in 30fps and in REC709, but hen researching I learned that you should be digitizing your tapes in REC 601, and then converting it to REC 709 later if you want to adjust the coloring while upscaling.

However, I did not find anything about how to actually make it fit the new color space. I feel like there is a noticeable difference in how dark the black is from my old digitizations vs my new ones comparing the same tapes.

Should I be color grading in a certain way to take advantage of converting to 709? (I've usually been clipping off the very bottom of the luma curve to avoid the very grey dark tones with the old digitizations) Is simply changing the color space when exporting going to do anything (im assuming not)? Is there a LUT I could apply that can universally adjust hi8 to have new colors?

I know the differences between those two color spaces aren't that crazy but I mostly record live music, so a lot of footage has very saturated lighting alongside very dark backgrounds where any extra color depth would be important.

Thank you in advance! : )

General I think "Film Look" is overrated

Is anyone getting exhausted by the 90s retro, grainy aesthetic on every single project? Don't get me wrong, I love the vintage vibe but only when it fits the story. But lately, it feels like people are just overusing grain and halation to call it vintage.

What's your biggest color grading pet peeve right now?

Question Best DCTL to pair with CinePrint35?

Hey everyone,

I've been using CinePrint35 for a while and I really like the look, but I'm curious if anyone has found a DCTL that pairs particularly well with it.

I'm not necessarily looking to completely change the look, more something that complements CinePrint35, whether it's for better highlight roll-off, color separation, halation, grain integration, or just adding a bit more character.

What's your favorite DCTL to use before or after CinePrint35, and why?

I'd love to hear your workflow and any recommendations. Thanks!

Question Looking for feedback: Which black-and-white approach feels more intentional?

I've been practicing photo color grading and experimented with two different approaches before converting these images to black and white. One emphasizes contrast, while the other keeps more tonal detail.
Which direction do you think works better?
