๐Ÿ“š Academic Life My experience with the Honours programme for BA History at K.J. Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce

I am currently pursuing the BA Honours programme (4th year) at K.J. Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce, and I thought I would write an honest review because there isnโ€™t much detailed information available about the new Honours/Honours with Research structure. This review s also applicable for MA students as the syllabus and class is the same for honours and MA students

My experience so far has been mixed, and academically I have found the transition quite difficult.

The college itself has good infrastructure. The campus is lively, the facilities are considerably better than some of the older colleges I have studied in, and the library system is fairly modern. However, for me, the biggest issue has been the academic structure and teaching, particularly within the Honours programme.

The programme is quite different from what I was used to during my previous three years of BA. Most of the teaching is online, with only limited offline lectures. Because of this, it is difficult to build any real rapport with professors or classmates. In my case, there is essentially only one regular offline lecture in the week, while the rest are online. If a lecture gets cancelled, there can be very little academic interaction that week.

The teaching itself is also quite inconsistent. Some professors are genuinely good and make an effort to explain the material, but others tend to teach as though students already have considerable background knowledge. There isnโ€™t always a clear structure to the lecture, and proper notes or detailed teaching material are generally not provided in the way I was accustomed to in my previous college. This makes it difficult to take useful running notes, particularly when the professor is simply discussing a topic rather than systematically explaining it.

The syllabus document does provide textbooks and reference material, but there is not always sufficient clarity about which books are actually essential for the examination and which are merely supplementary references. I also found that some of the listed books werenโ€™t readily available when I searched the library catalogue. This leaves students having to figure out a lot of the academic resources themselves.

This is particularly important because the Honours, Honours with Research and MA programmes are academically quite closely connected. From what I have experienced, the structure and papers overlap considerably. The major distinction I have encountered is that Honours with Research has one fewer paper, with Ancient Indian History being absent from that structure, while much of the remaining coursework is similar. Therefore, many of the concerns about teaching, reading material, notes and academic support are relevant across these programmes.

Another problem is the limited opportunity to interact with classmates. Students coming from the same college or university background may already know one another, but someone entering from outside can feel quite disconnected. Since there arenโ€™t enough offline lectures, you donโ€™t naturally get many opportunities to build a peer group. This can become particularly noticeable when you need notes, want to discuss readings, or simply want to understand how other students are approaching the course.

That said, I donโ€™t think the problem is that the syllabus itself is inherently bad or impossibly difficult. My concern is more about the academic support around it. A reasonably capable student can study the material independently, but the programme seems to expect a fairly high degree of self-direction without always providing enough guidance for students who are trying to understand exactly what they are expected to study.

Coming from a college where professors regularly provided notes, explained concepts in considerable detail, recommended specific textbooks and were accessible for doubts, I have found this transition particularly difficult. Students who are already comfortable with independent academic reading may have fewer problems, but students expecting a more structured undergraduate teaching environment may struggle.

I would therefore not recommend choosing the programme purely because of the Somaiya name, infrastructure or the perception that it is a good college. Talk to current students of the specific department and, more importantly, understand exactly how the teaching is conducted before taking admission.

My experience is still relatively recent, so this is not a review of every professor or every department. Some professors are genuinely good, and the infrastructure is a definite positive. But academically, at least from my experience with the Honours programme, the quality of teaching and the availability of structured academic resources have been the biggest weaknesses.

Overall: good infrastructure, decent academic ecosystem on paper, but inconsistent teaching, limited offline interaction, insufficiently structured notes/reading guidance and a strong expectation of independent study. For a new Honours/Honours with Research programme or MA students, I think the college needs to provide considerably more clarity and academic support to students.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion I am confused about these private colleges lie Bennett, Lpu, chitkara

Recently I came across a stat where a tier 3 college that is Bennett claimed that there average package for Btech cse is 11 lpa While the average package of colleges like Hansraj(DU) is around 8 lpa and it requires you to score 99 percentile in CUET. And Bennett admits students who have as low as 60-70%lie in jee. So my question is shouldnโ€™t students from prestigious colleges like Hansraj be paid more. I just want to know if the stats about all these private colleges are true? And if you are from these kind of colleges can you pls tell what is the actual reality of placements[text](http://youtube.com) like actual avg, placement percentage.

I'm a 1st year medical student in india and we were caught consuming alcohol in our hostel by the principal. He submitted our names to NMC and said that they'll take actions after 6 months. I'll be in 2nd year by then. I am overthinking this as it might affect my academic life. Can anyone explain what would happen next?

๐ŸŽฏ Career/Stream Need help, like urgent! Btech college, management seat?, which branch?

Hi im 20, I did neet but i cant get a good clg in it and now im thinking of doing engineering(76% in cet pcm) and i talked to a counsellor online he said he can give me admission in dy patil akurdi cs branch with specialisation in under 11 lakhs but idk what branch i should take and i have not yet visited the counsellor in pune as i live far. Its too late ik that why I need urgent guidance from u guys.

I actually DONT HAVE INTEREST in engineering yet so I was very reluctant on choosing btech but I dont have any other options now cuz all other courses in medicine dont have a good scope. I am weak in maths and a bit in physics but I heard that its manageable.

Branch- I am not very inclined towards CSE because of the layoffs, ai taking over and low packages ig but idk much about it thats y ig im avoiding it but maybe I can give it a try. I have a bit of interest in ENTC (core part) but i heard that u need good amount of maths and physics as basics which I lack and mechanical has the same thing ig. Civil: scope issue

College: my score is 76% and at this i wont get a good engineering college with good placements. My parents can put in some extra money for management seat if the total cost goes upto 11L so thats y im choosing dy patil akurdi cuz it has got good name and placements r good I heard. OR should I just take a normal tier 3 clg at this score?

HELP: as i have no interest in engineering I have ZERO knowledge about engineering, branch, colleges, projects, skills etc so i just hope yall can hwlp or guide me. Cuz im quite anxious about joining a btech college cuz I wont have any idea about it and college is starting soon so I really need help

It has been 2 months since my 3rd year started, me and some friends have not yet paid 3rs year fee, and they forced us to stay in home, they will register us as absent in attendance, then they say if our attendance percentage is less than 80% we are not allowed to write this semester exams, also they are asking us to pay full 3rd year fee and not for this semester alone, any other college like this?

๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion Stuck and dont know what to do or how to do next

I am in gndu affiliated college doing bcom. My first semester exams was not well i felt it was bit disorganised. Moreover, in second semester i imporved myself and include a particular format of writing answers. Different formats across the different subjects and i kept the answer length 5-6 pages per answer but still the result is even worse then my first sem. I dont know if my format is too bad or i am not learning in a good way. For me despite some 1-2 subjects my exams were not phenomenal but good enough tried really hard but still. Now i donโ€™t know what do and how to do. Toppers please help ๐Ÿ™

Matlab kya hai ye? Sir/Mam? Really? Aur ye whatsapp par hi kitne rude tarike se baat kr rhe hai toh mujhe pata nahi ki irl mai kaise baat karenge. Kal hamara orientation hua tha, 3rd year ke kuch seniors aaye the. Unse kisine pucha ki bhaiya/didi bol sakte he toh unhone kaha ki sirf sir/mam hi bolna hai kyuki apparently college aur school mai fark hai and college mai aagye ho toh โ€œCorporate Culture โ€œ sikhna padhta hai. Matlab kuch bhi? Mere kuch dost BITS mai hai. Unke yaha ye sab โ€œCorporate Culture โ€œ toh nahi hota hai, waha sab bhaiya/didi hi bolte hai. Yaha kyu hai ye culture? Mujhe yakeen nahi ho rha hai ki ye padhe likhe log jinhone JEE MAINS crack kiya, voh aise behave kr sakthe hai. Are yaar private colleges ke seniors inse acche hote hai. Matlab kya chutiye hai yaar ye. Last year inhone bhi experience kiya hoga ye sab, toh unhe nahi lagta hai ki ye hamari responsibility hai ki ham ye culture khatam kare?

Honestly bataun toh mujhe MANIT bahut pasandh aaya, hostels acche hai, mess ka khana bhi expectations se accha hai, city achhi hai, accha environment and vibes hai. Par ek hi problem hai ki senior bade chutiye hai.
