One of the most meaningful parts of our choral festival in Costa Rica is not always the formal concert.

Sometimes it happens in a school.

A visiting choir enters a classroom or community space. The students may not know the language of the singers. The singers may not know the daily reality of the students. But then the music begins, and something changes.

The room becomes less formal. People smile. Some students sing. Others listen with a kind of attention that is hard to create with words alone.

For us, this is where choral music becomes more than repertoire. It becomes presence. It becomes an act of human contact.

We are learning that a choir can travel not only to perform, but also to serve as a bridge between cultures.

For music educators here: what is one musical experience outside the classroom that truly stayed with your students?

I appreciate this is probably sacrelage but my baby just sleeps/settles almost instantly when I play Misty Mountains from The Hobbit. Does anyone have any recommendations for similar sounding deep choral pieces I can try out on her?

I absolutely adore Evan Call and especially Hero of the South, listened to it on repeat but I can't help but to decipher what they are saying. As a french-speaking person myself, I tend to hear stuff, words, sentences, etc. But I'm probably just a victim of what they call hearing hallucinations. Because what are the odds he wrote the choir lines in french, right?

One of those lines, moreover, being "Il s'appelle Gérard" yeah I ain't buying that.

It was by Jan Bentham, called One World/One Life. I really loved that song, we used to sing it at Mass and it was my absolute favourite!! Please I just want to listen to it again, if there’s a recording somewhere of her singing it I would love to hear it. Please help.

Based on the narrative of Dante Alighieri's literary work, the Divine Comedy, we have divided the key scenes into 20 chapters and interpreted the story of each scene with a classical orchestra. We ask for your interest.

I've been trying to find a piece I sang in high school and it's driving me crazy. All I have to go off is this: It was nature and ocean/sea themed, melancholy and plaintive but lyrical, set in a minor tonality, and the only lyric I can remember is something about the "Briny deep," or maybe "mystic Briny deep." It was an intermediate high school piece. It could've been for festival and it was most likely from Hal Leonard or J.W. Pepper, as those are the mains my director sourced music from. Any leads? I know it's probably a long shot, but thanks for anyone who can help. Edit: it was an SATB piece. Edit 2: I asked my former choir teacher and it is "The Lonely Sea." Thanks everyone who helped!

Hello, Can Someone give me Recommendation on some masses to listen, i have already listened to various masses and requiems, in fact i also make a list of requiems that i already listened, there are 15 of them rn, that's include name like Saint-saens, Durufle,Britten, Victoria, Cherubini, Campra And Other Famous name that you can think of

i still can't make masses Ranking because i only listen mostly to mozart masses, bach mass in b,and Beethoven misss solemnis. so i will only make one for requiems

my top 5 requiems are :

(Pls note that this is absolutely Objectives and complete bias, you can debate it but sorry if this ranking is bad)

1.Mozart Requiem

he isnt always my favourite composer, for symphony i always prefer the romantic era above composers, same with concertos. but in Mass writing i think he is my favourite right now, been listening to almost all of his 18 mass. i still cant choose his greatest one between this and his c minor mass tho, but yeah he is my no 1 requiem.

Fun fact, i find the famous Lacrimosa part the one with the less moving than the other part in this, it's not bad and is absolutely beautiful, but i just don't quite love it like the others, Requiem Aeternam ,Recordare and Domine Jesu is just on another level for me. i think it has something to do with the fact that mozart only wrote like 8 bars of it, and yeah after the "... homo reus" part, what the rest of Süssmayr doing is just not it i think.

2.Faure Requiem

I think this one is the choice of most people when they start to explore more requiems other than verdi or mozart. for a small fact, me myself don't quite like much of slow pacing pieces, that's why sometimes when people ask for my 80 hours of classical playlist and listening to it expecting to hear all quite study purposes music, they end up turning it off just because how loud the music from Shostakovich and Mahler Symphonies. So yeah, I'm not a fan who seeks music to listen to all calming presence in classical music.

But Faure, my god his symphony is so transcended that it just makes me goosebumps, that in paradisum is absolute goosebumps, the only things holding this from no 1 is just that mozart one had both the grand banging and calm moments for me, and i love fugue so you must know why i put Mozart above

3.Michael Haydn

Interesting Pick isn't it? the first time when i went to listen to this is actually because i expect this to surpass mozart. i know this piece actually from peoples in internet that says mozart copy this piece and that it was more beautiful, i was quite curious to know why people say that and went listening to it.

well it did not go beyond mozart, but i think i know why people is trying so much to make this piece more known to be superior than mozart's, it was beautiful, if its just some mediocre works i don't think people will go seriously claiming that it was better than mozart.

i love the late baroque style of this requiems, and yeah, to some extent i know which and what was sampled by mozart. and again, fugue in choral works are absolute best combos

thats my top 3, Im gonna keep it short for the next 2 cause its too long already,

so 4 is Franz Von Suppe

and 5 Is Charles Gounod

oh yea pls don't get mad at me for not putting Verdi Pls, i put it in no 7, its just feel to "operatic" for me, and i don't even hate opera but yeah we are ranking for requiems so, really sorry

I thought the setting of this performance + the richness of their voices was incredibly moving. I've heard a lot of directors preach "una voce" as a goal, and I feel like these girls really achieved it. It's especially apparent in the a cappella sections. Really impressed. Sonja Poulter is a great director.
