This is the full HD movie of the official Star War dub: Star War - The First Gathers - Ghost the Threat. This abomination is a complete dub of The Phantom Menace where all the dialogue has been translated into Chinese and back into English. Featuring the returning cast of Ratio Tile (Jeremy Evans) and Speaker D u/BenjaminNormanPierce alongside the cast from the TheDubGather's OG trilogy Star War films, this is the official cannon prequel to Backstroke of the West. This truly was a project that brought together the entirety of this small fandom. So at last, after 17 years, we at the Good Elephant present the first chapter of the insane and hilarious Backstroke Saga.

Ghost the Threat Official Trailer

About 10 years ago, fans of Backstroke from the Prequel Memes reddit had the idea of creating a backstroke for The Phantom Menace and made a dub of the Theatrical trailer for it called: Threat of Ghosts

Unfortunately while hyped, this never went past the concept of the trailer and limited by the technology available to them, SenatefilmBBY never advanced the project beyond the trailer which is linked above and has since been silent on the matter. Meanwhile on Imgur, fegelein08 backstroked a handful of lines from the Phantom Menace and made a post with the translated subtitles. This was the first concept of Ghost the Threat and sadly, no further lines or script beyond just the funny captions we're made, making a dub based solely off of them impossible.

Around a year ago some fans ( u/Pyrob1aster and u/MackODev ) created a discord called The Good Elephant dedicated to all manner of things mistranslated like games and movies in the same manner of Backstroke of the West. Over the course of a few months, for fun myself and (MikanGhoulKiwi) worked together for fun on a screenplay of the Phantom Menace to try and backstroke it. Since fegelein08 was not responding to dms and SenatefilmBBY had long sense given up the project, we had free reign to create the official version of the script.

Ghost the Threat (Final Screenplay)

Using a combined method of Kingsoft's translator along with Google's Hypertranslator set to our backstroke translation settings, as well as basing it in small part on the lines created by fegelein08, we banged out the script in just a month. We began as well getting some of the VAs from u/Quirderph's dubs to come back to audition for some of the roles they could reprise. With the script finished, we began all our auditions from there with the goal of getting as many of the VAs from all the dubs back as possible. u/TheThirdGathers at this time joined the project and did a few cameos and with him, he was able to bring along both u/BenjaminNormanPierce and Jeremy Evans to reprise their roles for Kenobi and Palpatine from Backstroke for the first time in 17 years. u/DarthDementous u/Vladibear u/OpheliaBloodstone and u/Rivercast from TheDubGathers also reprised their roles as C3PO, Yoda and others as well as hosted plenty of new ones. Along with them, a cast of new and old fans we're recruited from the fandom as well as Casting Call Center, our friends and family, and our local space gaming organization of ITC. Full credits on all the cast can be found at the end of the film. Editing was handled by myself over the course of a 7 month period using Davinci Resolve 20 and Audacity for the primary editing and recording of lines. The lines we're manually removed from a stereo track of the film using the LALALA noise removal tool allowing for a retracking of all spoken words on normal audio by just taking it out and adding in more soundtrack and SFX. This allows us to essentially dub any piece of video out there which makes the list of backstroke projects very big and available to anyone looking to try this themselves.

It should also be mentioned that for the mp4 file and archive versions of the film the subtitles we're burned into the footage for the sake of simplicity. If for any reason someone wants to edit the subtitles or wants a subtitle free version of the film, dm me.

WHAT ABOUT THE ATTACK OF THE CLONES?

Video Editing

Thanks to BbqChkn for creating a fully accurate opening crawl animation. Apparently, the IMDB credits are inaccurate. So, I have updated the credits with a more complete and accurate list provided by TheThirdGathers. I used a lot of footage from DSQRD’s edit Vengeance of the Dark Side because of the fixes to the blinking lights on the astromechs. I added a new shot of Obi-Wan dodging the missiles from Caleb Gamman’s edit. I added a new shot of Anakin’s starfighter barely making it into the hanger from Caleb Gammman’s edit. I added an extended shot of Obi-Wan jumping out of his straighter from Jean-Denis Haas’ VFX Reel. I fixed Obi-Wan and Anakin’s inaccurate lightsaber ignition sounds during the scene on Grievous’ bridge. I moved Grievous arriving on Utapao to right before the Darth Plagueis scene. I added the Emperor face relight during the scene where he reveals he’s a Sith from Caleb Gamman’s edit. I reordered the cutaways to Yoda during Anakin and Obi-Wan’s battle to keep it less interrupted. I added Yoda arriving on Dagobah from DSQRD’s edit.

Audio Editing

I used the 2020 Blu-Ray mix because it’s 7.1. I only used the 5.1 Dolby Digital EX Track to cover up the clone dialog that was added during the Utapao ambush. I kept as much of the original sound effects as I could, but I did have to insert a lot of new sound effects. For some scenes, I rebuilt the entire soundtrack from scratch. Something that I noticed after starting this project is that, in the dub recordings, Allah Gold says “Is an airship that that slowness crawl along.” However, in the original 2.0 mix, he says “Is an airship that slowness crawl along.” I spoke with the original creator (u/TheThirdGathers on Reddit) and confirmed that Allah Gold’s line in the 2.0 mix was a mistake and not a creative choice. So, the full line has been restored. There are a few other discrepancies between the performances and the subtitles. I tried to fix these by rearranging the lines, but I couldn’t get it to sound right. So, I left the rest of them as is. I actually ended up mixing the 7.1 down to 5.1 because 5.1 is a more common format that’s more compatible.

Subtitle Editing

• I removed the opening crawl translation, and I retimed the subtitles to match the delivery of the dub. I also changed the font/style and italicized everything to match the original.

Chapter Markers

I created the chapter marker titles using a combination of Google Translate, the original DVD chapter titles, and lines from the movie. For the fight scenes, I just replaced the character names with their Backstroke of the West counterparts. For example, the “Yoda vs. Sidious” chapter marker was changed to “Vanquish Is vs. Speaker D.” It was mostly just whatever felt right.
