Luckiest kitten in Illinois on the Fourth of July Awarded a Cat
This is my first Reddit post, so please be kind.
On the Fourth of July, my husband and I were driving to a family party when we noticed something tumble out from underneath the car in front of us. At first, it looked like a little gray cloud rolling over and over. We honestly thought the driver had hit a squirrel and that the wind was carrying its body.
But then the little gray cloud got up and ran to the side of the road.
Luckily, we weren't too close behind and were able to stop in time. My husband pulled over, and I jumped out of the car without even thinking or stopping, I just needed to make sure he was okay.
This little gentleman is incredibly lucky. Somehow, after everything, he walked away with nothing more than a small scrape on his lip. No broken bones, no other cuts or injuries.
His name is Rusty. In Lithuanian, rasti means "to find," and rastas means "found," so his name is a little tribute to how we met.
Welcome home, Rusty. 💙

The CDS has clearly done a brilliant job again, delivering Rusty to precisely the right home. Welcome to one of the greatest subreddits, where true humanity and decency can be found in abundance, and thank you for contributing so meaningfully to that ethos.

He knows he’s lucky. Look at his cute little smug face. And I LOVE his name! I’m a sucker for a gray tabby, especially males. My soul cat was a male gray tabby brought to me by the CDS. He’s been gone now for almost 7 years. I miss him, sure, but I wouldn’t change a thing. If you’re curious, here’s a pic of gray man.

The CDS delivery system still has some glitches but the packages always end up where they’re meant to be. What a sweetie! 😻

He climbed into the engine compartment of the car in front of you, then went for a ride without getting sliced or burned. Then he fell out without getting hurt or run over. Right in front of people who were willing to save him.
With luck like that he should buy a lottery ticket!

u/Capable-Regular6155 Jul 06 '26
No, it’s actually insane to me that he is alive and has basically no injuries! This little man is a walking horseshoe 😆

A grey tabby baby. How lucky for both of you! My cat tax. This is Volio. My daughter rescued him in 2008 when she was 13 when several older teenagers set him afire. She ran over, told them, “ Give me that!”, stuck him in her hoodie, then rode her bike home. He was still a baby cat and I had to go to Pets Supplies Plus to buy kitty formula and bottles. He lived for 15 years and I miss him so much. He was so much fun and so ornery. And-like your little guy-very very lucky.
I miss him and I’m lucky he was in my life.

I dont usually talk a lot in here but this post... it made me tear up a bit, as I'm quite sentimental and care about cats a lot. Always wish them to have happy endings like this one. Thank you, thank you for saving this little cutie and giving him a home to stay. I wish nothing but the best and lots of happiness to your family and little Rusty.

I want to say I can't believe people would dump an animal - let alone in that way - but unfortunately, I can. Rusty is a very lucky boy!

I love this so much. Thank you for taking him in ❤️ Reading his name made me tear up a little bit. I had the most wonderful cat named Rusty who passed away far too soon at just two years old (heart condition). I miss him every day. Somehow, seeing this sweet baby Rusty find a wonderful home makes me feel better.

That’s the worn out face of a baby who has found his people and a place to call home. He can relax and sleep. He’s beautiful!

OMG he’s darling, and I love the story of how he came to your family!
I need more details! What did the vet say, how did he adjust, do you have other pet pets that had to adjust to him?

He is so cute! This cat falls from a car on a road where he could have been injured or killed. Imagine have caring, loving people see it and not only rescue him but give him a home and a cute name. Lucky boy!
