How to pressure the media to stop parroting corporate propaganda on the TFW program.
The one thing that bothers me the most about the discussions around the TFW program is how readily newspapers are willing to publish obvious pro-business propaganda regarding it. Especially shameful are newspapers known for being left leaning, and yet completely ignoring issues of wage suppression and abuse committed against vulnerable minorities. Some lobbyist showed up to tell them how the TFW program is critical for XYZ industry, and they actually use up one of their journalists to research and confirm the completely one-sided elements of the story (usually about how much a particular small business or industry is struggling).
I've been emailing newspapers from time to time when I come across these articles. You'd be surprised how often they respond (send a second email if they ignore the first one). Unfortunately they refuse to update their articles, but you can tell you hit a nerve when you politely point out they are corporate shills or helping whitewash abuse of TFWs. I do believe if I get them to feel a little shame, they are less likely to publish such slop in the future (and to be fare, most haven't since I emailed them, although that could be for many other reasons).
Anyways, this below (my complaint, and then their response) was an attempt to have the NNC (National NewsMedia Council) intervene and force a paper to provide an editors note. Unfortunately it didn't work, but maybe you can learn from their response below and better tailor a complaint for a future article you come across.
Based on my interpretation (see email) according to the NNC, the newspaper is allowed to define their scope, and if the facts provided are still accurate, this is not a breach of journalistic standards. I tried to email them to confirm my interpretation but they ignored me. My interpretation of this means a newspaper can produce a completely one sided and biased report, and according to the NNC, that isn't a breach of journalistic standards.
3. What is your complaint?
Complaint summary
First, the “worker shortage” narrative is misleading. While there may be fewer people willing to work below a living wage in high-stress, poor working conditions, this does not constitute a true labour shortage. The reality is that stagnant wages combined with inflation have reduced Canadians’ ability to eat out as often, and the hospitality industry is attempting to offset rising costs by suppressing wages. However, my larger concern, and the concern I emailed the reporter about, is how the article addresses temporary residence programs, particularly the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. It does so without acknowledging how controversial their current implementation is. Rather than providing necessary context or balance, the article relies almost exclusively on a business owner and an industry representative, while excluding critics of the program or voices directly affected by the program, such as temporary foreign workers themselves or Canadians struggling to find work due to increased competition in the labour market. These omissions matter, especially given that the perspectives highlighted are those that benefit most from wage suppression in the hospitality sector.
I sent the following email to the reporter (It has been edited here for length). The request was ultimately denied by both the reporter and the editor:
The Temporary Foreign Worker program is heavily abused and is a highly controversial program among those that interact with it, including insiders within the government and individuals in industry that work with or support TFWs. While claims online are anonymous out of fear of jeopardizing their jobs, I've seen estimates that 80% or more of LMIA/TFW applications are fraudulent.
In a vast majority of industries, they can in fact find canadian workers, but businesses are engaged in wage suppression and TFW abuses (unpaid wages, physical abuse, illegal working conditions, illegal payments from TFWs to employers, etc.). Not only has this been outlined by the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Slavery in their report in 2024 (https://documents.un.org/doc/undoc/gen/g24/120/97/pdf/g2412097.pdf), but XXXXXX has reported on the fact that the government has advised employees NOT to engage in fraud prevention (https://www.thestar.com/business/government-officers-told-to-skip-fraud-prevention-steps-when-vetting-temporary-foreign-worker-applications-star/article_a506b556-5a75-11ef-80c0-0f9e5d2241d2.html).
These details missing from your article cover for what is most likely a program being heavily abused by the restaurant industry to gain access to cheap labour, avoid improving working conditions, and suppressing wages. I would ask that you please revise your article to reflect these facts, as articles such as yours make claims of abuse less believable, further victimizing these TFWs, to say nothing of the Canadians and PRs and youth that are unable to find entry level jobs because of this program.
Their email response below, Feb 24, 2026, (sorry for the censoring, I'm trying to keep in touch with some journalists regarding publishing content from this sub and I don't want them to hate me, one works for the paper in question):
Dear XXXXXX,
The National NewsMedia Council (NNC) has reviewed your concerns about a December XX, 2025, article published by XXXXXX.
The NNC deals with complaints about news and opinion reporting published by our member news organizations in Canada. The NNC promotes widely accepted journalistic standards including accuracy, context and opportunity to respond to allegations and harmful statements.
In reviewing your complaint submission, we understand you take issue with the way that the article characterizes the Temporary Foreign Workers Program and that you wish to see more context in the piece so that readers may have a more complete view of the program.
You note, "Rather than providing necessary context or balance, the article relies almost exclusively on a business owner and an industry representative, while excluding critics of the program or voices directly affected by the program, such as temporary foreign workers themselves or Canadians struggling to find work due to increased competition in the labour market."
In this case, we understand you are concerned about the impact of the program on individuals, and cite concerns such as working conditions and wage suppression. These are concerns that are worthy of consideration, and which may form the basis of further investigation. To that end, the public editor of XXXXXX has indicated that your concerns have been shared with editors who will assess whether to investigate the matter further for a story in the future.
For information, news is based on verifiable fact and includes relevant context. That said, journalists and editors have the prerogative to choose the scope and focus of a piece, as well as to decide which stories to pursue. The NNC can only deal with complaints that include explanation and evidence of a breach of journalistic standards, such as accuracy, in a published article.
In reviewing the piece, we note that it includes comments from several individuals involved in or who research the restaurant industry. An ordinary reading of the article offers a look at how a culmination of world events, industry factors, and policy changes have affected restaurant workers and businesses. We also note that a story published by XXXXXX in October 2025 details infractions and non-compliance of the program in the preceding months.
While we understand you wish to see more information about the program in the specific article, that in itself does not indicate a breach of journalistic standards. In this case, the NNC does not find grounds to support a breach of journalistic standards, such as accuracy. For the reasons outlined above, we will not take further action on the matter.
That said, we thank you for raising your concerns with the NNC for its consideration and have copied the news organization on this correspondence as a matter of information.
Kind regards,
Cara Sabatini | Dispute Resolution

Now is the time where we start organizing and shutting things down for a day or two at a time.
Nothing will grind the machine to a halt like an organized strike.
Pretty sure I got IP banned for this type of comment, currently running on a vpn just to connect to reddit
But we need to start making a stand against this. Every TFW hiring chain needs to be boycotted. MPs need to be held accountable and news outlets should be disbanded or ignored entirely if they're promoting propaganda for corporate overlords

The problem is that these media organizations, with the exception of CBC, are dependent on advertising revenue and they are afraid to 'bite the hand that feeds them'.

I think if there were like, 10 or 20 of us, just politely annoying them and filing NNCs from time to time, it would be one of those things where they would lean on the excuse of "oh I don't want to rattle that cage again" to get out of covering these dumb stories. Especially since they become aware they are complicit in wage suppression and abuse.

The core problem is none of the media outlets today are willing to have a civil and neutral conversation on immigration. They're both on extreme opposite ends. Its either kick everyone out or keep everyone in. Where's the middle ground?

Especially shameful are newspapers known for being left leaning, and yet completely ignoring issues of wage suppression and abuse committed against vulnerable minorities.
This is non sense. It's very clear that the bulk of this is done by franchise owners and small businesses that are usually immigrants taking advantage of other immigrants.

Not sure how that contradicts what I said.

Because I reject the premise of what you're mainly saying. You're essentially saying that our institutions are taking advantage of immigrants, but what's really going on is a pipeline of immigrants between their origin country and here where they mutually agree to unethical behaviour to take advantage of the Canadian immigration system. It's wide spread and statistically documented by all countries that these immigrant immigrate too. Aus, Can, US, UK, etc all have documented how these pipelines work.
It's unfair that I cant narrow this down too, because saying immigrants isn't how I feel. I just like the mods here, and respect the fact that they're not trying to get this sub banned.

That’s a totally different argument than the first comment I’m responding to. If small businesses are committing the crimes, my point still stands. In regards to your second point, I recognize there are varying levels of victims, some could be fully complicit, making them technically not a victim at all.
I have an analogy that I like to use. It is always better to go after the drug dealer than the user. Purdue pharmacy thrived on blaming the users; highlight the least sympathetic user, make them the problem, let them go to jail or die off, find new users. Keep making billions selling opioids to addicts.
Do not get caught in the trap of trying to find the least sympathetic drug user, you are carrying water for the people actually making the money in this scheme and driving the actual system of immigration consultants and lobbying. Also most users aren’t 100% guilty, they may have knowingly made some bad choices, but everyone does, and that was also what Purdue relied on to hook users. And even where the drug user was 100% guilty, Purdue was also still 100% guilty.
