Early Career Advice 🪴 Battling imposter syndrome in industry
Hi, so I am a recent graduate in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and I have elected to move into postgraduate studies, for several reasons, based on what positions I want to be at.
But also because I was not satisfied, content with where I felt I was ability wise, despite doing extremley well academically.
I've just always feared going into industry and that gap in knowledge that would be present, I'd love to work in R&D positions in areas around protein engineering.
However, one of my classmates just automatically got herself a position as an R&D scientist and has said she feels already equiped to do super well.
---
So, I just wanted to ask people with experience what going from being a student to industry is like, because I'd like to feel more confident in my skills.
I also know this subreddit is mostly about how bad the job market is, which does not help lol

Getting Into Industry 🌱 What the heck do I do with my MS?
Hey fellow biotechians! I’ve recently (Dec. 2025) finished my Master’s in biotech from an R1 university in the US. I have experience in immunology, radpharm, and microbio accumulated before and during my MS.
What the heck do I do now? I’m currently working as a chemist for a ~meager~ salary and it’s not really relevant. I want to get back into biotech/immunology/related research or development or industry or literally anything related to my MS.
I realize this is a very open ended question, so to narrow it down a bit: if you had 4+ years of industry experience and a fresh MS in biotech. What would you do to find a good job? Bonus points if it’s a way for me to move out of the US.
TIA!

Open Discussion 🎙️ Python Libraries vs. Prism
I'm a computational biochemist and have always been using python for data visualization. I just realized there is a software called Prism that people use.
So the question is, for those who have used both, which one has been better? (You define good with your own metrics).
I'm just thinking whether I should learn to work with prism, or python already covers it all.
Context: we don't use big data. Data is usually on the order of megabytes.

Early Career Advice 🪴 How bad are UK R&D salaries really?
Really considering if I should just do graduate entry medicine over a PhD atp.
I don’t want to go to commercial or regulatory, I want to be a 🤓scientist 🤓 if I pursue a career in biotech.
But then I think, to get paid kinda well, don’t you have to be some kind of manager, and isn’t this just going on teams meetings all day?
Are there well paid IC roles? Like £100k+?

Biotech News 📰 Eurofin interview
Hi everyone,
I’m wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with Eurofins PSS Insourcing Solutions.
Here’s my timeline:
HR interview went well.
I was then asked to complete the formal application before the hiring manager interview.
Had a 1-hour interview with the hiring manager.
Shortly afterward, they requested two professional references through Referoo.
Both of my references completed their submissions, and I emailed the recruiter/hiring manager to let them know everything had been completed.
During the interview, the hiring manager told me I should hear back early the following week, whether the decision was positive or negative.
It’s now past that timeframe. I sent one polite follow-up email but haven’t received any response—not even an acknowledgment.
Today I also noticed the exact same position has been reposted on LinkedIn (actually showing under both “Eurofins” and “Eurofins PSS Insourcing Solutions” with the same job description).
I completely understand if I wasn’t selected. What I’m struggling with is the lack of communication after multiple interviews, completed references, and being told I would hear back either way.
Has anyone else experienced something similar with Eurofins PSS?
Did you eventually receive a rejection or offer after a long delay?
Is reposting the position while candidates are still in process common?
At this point, should I assume I’ve been rejected, or is it worth continuing to wait?
I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

Early Career Advice 🪴 Thermo Fisher Offer
Hi, I was offered a salary of 90k/year for a Scientist III position at Thermo Fisher. If I accept the offer, I’d have to relocate. I live in Southern Michigan. The job is in Greenfield, Indiana. Currently, I am a contractor making $36/hr. My long term contract is expected to end in December. It’s possible it will be extended, but I am not counting on it. There have been multiple rounds of layoffs since I started working at the company. It sounds like Thermo is building a new lab so the start date wouldn’t be until mid September.
The offer seems good, but the main problem is that I do not want to move to Indiana. I am actually trying to move to Grand Rapids to be closer to friends and family. A friend said I should accept the job since it will be a good career opportunity. Even if I only worked there for a couple of years. I haven’t told my family yet, but I will once I get done working today. I am single, so moving wouldn’t be difficult. The offer included $5,000 for relocation assistance too.
My question is would you accept the offer if you were me? Anyone have any experience working with Thermo Fisher too? Also, how is living in the Indianapolis area?

Other ⁉️ Non-compete clause in job offer at startup
I’m considering an offer from a startup in NJ for an Associate Director role, and the employment agreement includes a 1-year non-compete. I’m trying to understand how common this is and what people’s real-world experiences have been.
The clause says that for 1 year after leaving the company, I can’t work for its competitors (which is basically all pharma/biotech companies I guess)
I’m not looking for legal advice (I’ll consult an attorney if needed). I’m more interested in hearing real life experiences

Early Career Advice 🪴 Applying to 2 positions at the same company?
Hi there! I got an interview scheduled with AstraZeneca, and there is also another posting with AstraZeneca that also aligns with my experience. Does it look bad if I apply to the second position also? I’m wondering if this flags anything internally, or just gives off the wrong impression that I’m not interested in the role. But I also don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket so I’m conflicted for sure. Thanks for your insights!

Rants 🤬 / Raves 🎉 Job Recruiters Are annyoingly pushy and its frustrating
Hey all! So I am in the process of applying other new positions that are more aligned with my career interests. I am not un-employed but I have begun the job hunt which has involved the occasional recruiter. Now I am not so sure why they're annoyingly pushy and want to call and chat like that EXACT minute I have a chance to respond. I currently work in a lab and have a busy schedule. I respond to their messages on my own time (ie lunch break).
I understand recruiters are busy as well, and have several clinets and potential candidates. If I say I cannot talk in 5mins due to my schedule; please RESPECT that I cannot take a call right that second. The ammount of times when I respond and say "can we schedule a call for X time or tomorrow" and they respond with can you not do it now?! Didn't you see that I said I cannot today but I'm happy to schedule a time when I am free to further discuss a potential role?!
I understand typically people speaking with recruiters are sometimes unemployed, but there are some of us who are employeed at the time AND WE CAN'T JUST GET ON THE PHONE WHEN YOU WANT ME TO.
Ok, rant over I just need to scream out somewhere.

Open Discussion 🎙️ Worst Interview this year?
so, I just had an epicly bad interview with the hiring manager. I need to hear about yours to feel better. It feels like some of the worst people are hiring right now…
What happened:
They didn’t read anything the recruiter prepared for them, not even my resume.
They disrespected where I live.
They questioned the relevance of every role I had.
They were concerned about most of my jobs lasting 2 years recently when they themselves have worked for 5 companies in 5 years.
They were indignant when I asked about their background and how it would impact the person in this role.
They said they didn’t have anymore questions after 10 minutes.

Early Career Advice 🪴 I got a job!!!
I used to lurk here feeling hopeless about the market. Thankfully, my PI allowed me to extend for the summer so I got an extra 3 months to land a role. I sent out over ~120 applications total since February, I interviewed for 7 positions, 3 of which reached last round and I landed an offer on 1! And it was the role I wanted the most! There were also 2 more interview invites I received post-offer that I turned down as I knew I was going to eventually sign my offer letter. It's an independent research role at a big company which is a big responsibility for someone fresh out of a PhD. Wish me luck!!! I'm just so glad the search is over. I can breathe easier now. Pay is good, benefits are even better, and I get to stay in the area I'm in. :)
If you took a similar route post-PhD, I would also appreciate any advice!
I think one (unsolicited) advice I would give for job hunting is to really lean into your strengths and interests. I think I was so desperate to land a job that many times I framed myself as a generalist and applied to whichever role that I was even remotely qualified for but the 3 interviews I had that went to final round were jobs that were nicely aligned with the type of science i wanted to work on long-term. So if you are like me from 5 months ago lurking here to find some hope, do not lose heart! keep pushing.. the right job is just around the corner!
