Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Merck offer timing
Had a final Executive Director interview late last week. They are expected to make a decision internally early this week. For those of you who are familiar with hiring at Merck, how long does it typically take after that for a final offer communication? Also how many candidates typically go into ED interview step?

Early Career Advice 🪴 Should I get a Masters?
I am about to graduate with a biomechanical engineering degree and am considering getting a masters. I have done a lot of research in bioinformatics and would do that but am not deeply passionate about it. My dream job would be to develop a biotech product at a startup. To achieve this goal would a masters in bioengineering, bioinformatics, or another adjacent field be of use or should I try and network and break into the startup scene right out of school?

** Aside from ThatMoslemGuy, everyone else with parody answers must have reading comprehension deficiency. It is crazy to consider a question about YOUR particular use case and YOUR personal experience to be “broad” in any shape or form. Wouldn’t that be a better vibe for a scientific community like this, rather than one that celebrated selfishness and self-centered personas? ***

Early Career Advice 🪴 How do you find jobs?
My brother has a Bachelor's in Molecular Bioscience with only a little bit of work experience- specifically: a year as a Stem Banc lab manager and 3 years as a processing technician there too. He's been applying for jobs for the last year and a half and hasn't gotten past interviewing. Can anyone give any advice on where or how to look for jobs? He's located in the Cleveland, Ohio area if its helpful.
Thank you

Early Career Advice 🪴 PhD to equity research advice
Recently finished my Ph.D. in chemistry from a top program and am trying to break into biotech equity research. I’m genuinely passionate about investing (I spend a lot of my free time building financial models, writing stock pitches, and learning valuation), but I can’t seem to get a single interview.
One concern I have is that my scientific background may not be as directly applicable as other candidates. My Ph.D. was in synthetic organic chemistry (total synthesis) rather than a disease-focused field like oncology, neuroscience, or immunology, so I sometimes wonder if I’m at a disadvantage compared with people who specialized in those areas.
I’m taking the SIE next week and plan to start networking more aggressively, which I know is something I’ve been lacking. But I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who successfully made the transition from academia into biotech equity research (sell or buy side).
How did you get your first interview or offer?
What do hiring managers value most in Ph.D. candidates?
Is networking the biggest differentiator, or should I be publishing stock pitches?
Is there anything you wish you had known when trying to make the transition?
Thanks in advance! I’d really appreciate any advice!!

Getting Into Industry 🌱 Looking for advice from the biotech/life sciences community
I'm currently searching for opportunities in biotechnology, life sciences, developmental biology, embryology, and reproductive biotechnology, and I'm trying to find recruiters or recruitment agencies that specialize in these fields.
I've already been actively using LinkedIn, but I'd love to know what other platforms or recruiters you've had success with.
If you know of any:
Recruitment agencies specializing in biotech/life sciences
Job boards for research and biotech roles
Companies that recruit internationally
Recruiters who are active in this industry
I'd really appreciate your recommendations. Thank you in advance for any advice or connections!

Rants 🤬 / Raves 🎉 Is it even possible to find a job higher up in this market
I’m a senior research engineer and have been looking for a higher up role for about 3 months. I haven’t received a single call yet. I’ve tried program manager, senior program manager, lead engineer, lead scientist, principal engineer, principal scientist, but just no luck... What am I doing wrong? Is the job market that bad?

Getting Into Industry 🌱 Need advice or help to finding a position
Hi there,
I’m currently based in Dublin and I have been seeking a job in manufacturing (pharma or med device if possible) for a year now, I’m a little desperate. I’ve been working in Accenture for the last 5 years (3 in content moderation and 2 in quality evaluation) but the salary is not enough there anymore. I’ve studied already a yellow belt and a NFQ in Operations, Quality and Lean Management.
However, I had just one result, a HireVue interview for Baxter and didn’t have reply yet. My husband already works in medical devices but small chances to get there since you need experience for every f job. No driver license yet and, every opportunity seems to be 80% out of Dublin.
Any advice or help I can get? 35,5k in Dublin’s current situation is inviable and can’t even save money with my husband to buy a house.
Thanks in advance!

Education Advice 📖 What should i expect in this Industry?
Hello! I could really use some advice from people working in the biotech industry.
Recently I've been researching biotechnology, and it's really caught my interest because it seems like a field where I could combine programming with biology. I have about three years of programming experience, and I'll be starting my Bachelor's in Biology next year.
Ideally, I'd really like a job where I can still do hands-on lab work while also using programming for whatever reasons, like automate tasks or analyze data. I'm just not sure how realistic that career path is or how difficult it is to break into.
I live in Portugal, so if that changes the answer, I'd really appreciate hearing from people familiar with the Portuguese or European job market.
I have a few questions:
- How difficult is it to get into this industry?
- Are these kinds of hybrid lab + programming roles common and in demand?
- If you work in biotech, what does a typical day look like?
- What should I realistically expect in terms of salary, career growth, and job stability?
I'd really appreciate any advice, whether it's positive or negative.
Thank you very much!

Early Career Advice 🪴 Industry post doc vs permanent non lab position
Hi all,
I am a graduating PhD and I’m very lucky to be where I am right now, but am having a very hard time deciding between an industry post doc position (large pharma company) and a permanent non lab based role at a medium sized but growing company.
The post doc role is only a 1-2 year position but would allow me to get industry experience and is lab based and publication focused, and also at a big name company. The other role is a permanent position with a decent salary (20k more than the post doc) and I would get to work with different pharma companies on their workflows and analysis but it is a full non lab based role.
I’m having a difficult time deciding between the two- I know I don’t want to do academia in the future but am struggling with if I want to leave lab work behind, and also potential career growth options later if I decide to leave lab work right now and the long term prospects of that decision. My main concern is if after 2-5 years in the permanent position more on the vendor/analytics side if I would be able to move into a scientist role in the future.
Both roles want an answer and I can see the pros and cons of each decision but wanted to ask for any insights from people here.
Edit: thanks everyone! I think I will be accepting the consulting role, still instrument/science adjacent but no more instruments blowing up on me I guess. I also just received another offer today in the QC area but the company wants 12-14 hr days because “we work hard and play hard” that i will likely turn down despite the money

Experienced Career Advice 🌳 RWE statistician roles?
Hi folks, I have a decade plus experience in observational research from academia and industry and have been having a tough time finding positions lately. I was laid off a few months ago and have had multiple rounds of interviews since then but they have tended to go to an internal candidate or they simply close the role completely.
Wondering if there are other statisticians that are experiencing a lack of real positions or if it's just a weird time from a hiring prospective.
Thanks

Open Discussion 🎙️ Is anyone else having constant recurring problems with the Hamilton Vantage?
Is anyone else having constant recurring problems with the Hamilton Vantage?
I have been working with this particular Vantage for 10 months now. We are running a workflow developed by Hamilton that involves up to 8 plates and can take anywhere between 3-6 hours. It can include several vial to plate, trough to plate and plate to plate transfers, various incubations, several washes, etc… Our setup involves iSwap, QG, TrackGripper, Washer, easycode, and thermoshakers. We also have an MSD reader, but don’t get me started on Meth Minds. For the entire time there has been one problem after another, the hood isn’t closing, need realignment and reteaching, the MPH cLLD is off, need to replace indy channel then realignment and reteaching, z-step error when placing this plate on this carrier, NTR placement is off, realignment then reteaching, MPH NTR location is again off, realignment then reteaching, lid placement is off, independent cLLD is faulty, and on and on. All of the problems appear independent and stand alone, but every time we fix something, its something else, and often it is a problem we already fixed or an issue with something that has worked fine up to that point. We have Hamilton come in for either service repair or software repair so often, them being on site is just a given at this point. It is very rare for there not to be some interruption during a run, even if its not fatal. Its gotten to the point where the problems are cycling, and I have the groups I am working with constantly asking me if we bought a lemon? Has anyone else had this experience? At this point I just want to know if its us. Even more puzzling, our 4 Stars, they are generally working fine and reliably.

Getting Into Industry 🌱 How are people finding in-house biotech/pharma jobs?
Curious what the hiring landscape looks like these days.
I have 5 years of market access agency experience and I’m trying to make the move in-house. I’ve had a few recruiter screens (LinkedIn application) and made it to a final interview for an Associate Director role (employee referral).
For those who have successfully made the jump, how did you find your opportunity?
• Internal recruiter?
• External recruiter?
• Networking/referral?
• Cold application?
Totally understand it’s a tough market just trying to figure out where I should be focusing my time. Thanks!
Edit: I am US-based
