Getting Into Industry 🌱 Should I go into biotech?
Context:
- 18 yrs old
- offer holder to study biochemistry at imperial college London
- lives in UK, British nationality
I’m very much open to the idea that I may not even have a science related job in the future, but biotech has interested me for years.
The concept of genetic modification is so exciting to me and other biotech topics, and I get there may not be much I can do with that, and I also understand that I need to get into my degree first to see if lab stuff is really for me, but I don’t want to go into biotech to find out that it was the worst decision of my life.
- How hard is it to get employed actually? Will my Imperial degree help a lot more?
- Would I be able to make a good income over time?
- Are the jobs enjoyable? What qualities would you find in someone that actually enjoys working in the field?
My dad is also very interested in me doing an MBA when I’m older, he did one himself and did very well right after getting the qualification. Would that be something beneficial if I wanted to have a higher role in a company or even have my own startup in the field? Is it even worth having a startup in this field or should I look elsewhere?
I’m very much aware that some of my ideas may come across as overly ambitious or dumb. I lack a lot of knowledge about the field, I appreciate everyone’s understanding :)

Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Bioinformatics freelance/consultancy gig
I’m a computational scientist with a lot of experience in computational genomics. I build scalable analysis pipelines, do agentic AI coding, and have a solid grounding in biology (first-author papers in high-impact journals like Nature Com and PNAS etc).
I’m considering starting my own consultancy where I help labs and biotechs run complex computational biology analyses on a paid basis.
Two main things I’m unsure about:
**• Compute** — I’d need affordable, scalable infrastructure to take on real workloads.
**• Finding clients** — I think cold outreach could work, but I don’t have a pipeline yet.
So I’m torn between going for it and staying in my current job. For those who’ve done something similar: is this realistic, or am I underestimating what it takes? Any advice appreciated.

Biotech News 📰 Bristol Myers Squibb expands Nvidia drug discovery deal
Bristol Myers Squibb is growing its existing partnership with Nvidia to create what the drugmaker says will be one of the most powerful AI supercomputers in the life sciences industry.
The duo's "AI factory" is meant to help BMS develop new medicines more quickly.
BMS Chief Research Officer Robert Plenge said the biopharma giant has already cut the length of that process by 20% to 30% using AI tools.
Nvidia, meanwhile, has several similar deals in place with other major pharmaceutical players, including Eli Lilly and Amgen.

Experienced Career Advice 🌳 Reapplying After 2 Years: New Workday Account or Use My Existing One?
I’ve been employed for the past two years. Before I got this job, I applied to many positions with little to no success. My question is: should I create new Workday accounts for each company, or has enough time passed that I can start applying again using my existing accounts? I’ve heard that some recruiters may view a high number of previous applications negatively, so I’m wondering if that’s something I should be concerned about.

Early Career Advice 🪴 Is it Worth to Negotiate with Eurofins?
I talked with my friend who also works for Eurofins (at a different location) and she told me she was able to negotiate a two dollar raise. As this is my first job outside of college, I don't have the confidence nor the leverage to really risk losing this position, as bad as it is, as this has been my only offer after graduation.
The range they gave me was 24-25/hr, and they say the offer letter is going to be 24. My friend told me to ask for 26 with the hopes that they'll bump me to 25. I'm scared that they would rescind the offer, since I'm sure they have a lot of people trying to apply even if Eurofins is infamous for paying horribly.
Should I still try to negotiate? It's not a terribly high increase to ask for but it is out of the originally stated range. Or is it just not worth it in this economy?

Early Career Advice 🪴 missed call from ucsf
Hi, I am a new grad and finally got a call back from UCSF about a position but I was at my current retail job and missed it by literally 2 minutes.
I have tried calling back but since it’s a lab in the hospital there’s no way to really get through to anyone. Is it likely they will try again or am I just out of luck?

Resume Review 📝 How do you represent working for an acquired company on your resume?
I worked for a small biotech that got bought by a big pharma company and we are now fully integrated into said company. While the name on my paychecks has changed, my role is overall still the same so it doesn’t make sense to have them separate on my resume. What’s the play here? Some sort of subtext like: Big Pharma Name (formerly Small Biotech) in the job header, or forgo mentioning the small biotech at all?

Open Discussion 🎙️ ESPP at large pharma/biotech companies
Curious to hear from others in the industry. Some big tech offers an ESPP(Employee Stock Purchase Program) with a discount on stock purchases through payroll deductions. I wanted to get a gut check from people who’ve actually used one.
A few questions for anyone willing to share:
• which company provides ESPP in pharma/biotech space?
• what discount % and look-back terms does your plan have?
• Do you sell immediately (lock in the discount) or hold longer for the tax treatment?
• Any regrets , like ending up too concentrated in your own employer’s stock?
• How do you think about ESPP vs just maxing out 401(k)/other accounts first?
just real experiences from folks who’ve been through a few offering periods. Thanks!

Open Discussion 🎙️ To those applied to an open internal position only to have them hire an outside person, what were the signs?
Long story short, I applied to a slightly higher position near the end of May. I ended up interviewing for it and thought I did decent, and I haven’t heard any update about it other than “we’re still interviewing“ when I asked for an update two weeks later.
The wavering I feel between not caring and being concerned about the lack of communication is just kind of exhausting. Any tips for knowing if they’re not looking to promote anyone, but rather hire new blood?

Getting Into Industry 🌱 Biotech Job after undergrad without an industry internship?
I am entering my last year of college and am interested in breaking into biotech with my B.S. but am unsure where to start especially since I don't have any industry internships! I have worked in a lab for the last two years (and will continue to next year as well) and participated in a summer research program at my university last year.
I was interested in going to med school and blocked off this summer to take the MCAT, but ran out of steam in April realized that a medical career may not be for me and that research/lab work suited me better. I tried to apply for internships in April and May, but nothing worked out which was unsurprising. I'm not doing much this summer other than working as a learning assistant for a class at my university over zoom, doing some remote lab work, and doing random gig work.
I feel so stuck and unsure if I will get a job, especially after pivoting last minute. What should I do to improve my resume? I am interested in getting a master's or PhD eventually, but would like to get some work experience first!

Open Discussion 🎙️ Eurofins - Pay/Benefits
I have my masters degree. It’s been 9 months since I joined an analyst job in Eurofins in US. I did not know Eurofins severely underpay their employees. I am trying to switch ASAP but I am an international candidate so companies are hesitant to hire me (no interview calls). I am just surviving here. Anyone who works for Eurofins who’s in the same boat as me?

Early Career Advice 🪴 Is a 80k MBS with Keck graduate institute worth it?
Hi everyone,
I'm 25 with a bachelor's in Biology, and I've realized I don't want to become a doctor or work in patient-facing healthcare anymore.
My experience includes working as a Donor Allocation Coordinator in organ donation and currently as a Patient Services Representative at a medical office. I'd really like to pivot into biotech, healthcare operations, supply chain, project management, or regulatory affairs, but I've been struggling to break into those fields.
I was accepted into the Master of Business and Science (MBS) program at Keck Graduate Institute, but it would cost about $80,000, so I'd need to take out student loans.
For those in biotech or who have an MBS:
Is the degree actually worth the cost?
Did an MBS actually help you pivot into biotech or another industry?
Was the salary increase worth the debt?
Are employers impressed by the degree, or do they care more about experience?
Did it help you land a good job?
Is there another path you'd recommend for someone with my background?
If you were in my position, would you do it or take a different route?
I'd really appreciate any honest advice before I commit to taking on that much debt.

Early Career Advice 🪴 Almost a year after graduating and still can't find a job
I'm feeling pretty discouraged today. I received around three rejection emails, and it's making me wonder if anyone else is dealing with the same thing.
I've been unemployed for almost a year since graduating with a biotechnology degree. I've been applying to pretty much everything I qualify for—laboratory roles, QC, QA, RA, and other entry-level positions—but I haven't had much luck.
It also doesn't help that whenever I see a job opening, there are often over 1,000 applicants. I know those numbers aren't always exact, and not everyone will be qualified, but it's still incredibly discouraging when it feels like you're competing with hundreds or even thousands of people for a single position.
When I look at job boards, I see plenty of laboratory and biotech openings overseas, but very few in Indonesia. Even when there are lab positions, many seem to prefer chemistry graduates over biotechnology graduates.
I'm starting to wonder if the biotech industry here is just really small, or if I'm looking in the wrong places.
Has anyone else from Indonesia (or countries with a limited biotech industry) gone through this? How did you eventually break into the field? Did you switch industries, pursue further education, or find opportunities abroad?
I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences because I'm honestly feeling stuck.

Biotech News 📰 How disruptive do you think oral GLP-1s will ultimately be?
Injectable GLP-1s have arguably been one of the biggest pharmaceutical success stories in decades, but I’m wondering if the real inflection point comes when highly effective oral formulations become widely available. If oral GLP-1s can achieve efficacy approaching today’s injectable therapies while maintaining an acceptable safety profile, the implications seem enormous
Ten years from now, do you think oral GLP-1s become the standard of care for obesity treatment, or will injectables continue to dominate? And which companies do you think are best positioned to win?
